2. The masthead is placed on the top left of the
magazine. This is because when its on the shelves
you are able to see it clearly. As it is on the top of
the page it takes the top half and is big and bold
so it can attract a persons attention. The
masthead ‘NME’ has the colour red because it
shows us that it uses the idea of it being a
newspaper. This is shown by the colour red
because the newspapers such as the ‘the sun’ or
‘daily express ‘ both use the colour red and this
links into that by saying the stories are and they
are current.
The flash has been used in the
magazine front cover this is done
because it is making a point about
something. As you can see the flash is
also on the left third which reinforces
the idea that people are going to buy
the magazine as the most is placed on
the left third.
The main image is placed in the middle of the front
cover. The body language of the image shows us that the
artists it self is drawing you in to read what the magazine
is about and what stories or articles it has in it. Also the
image that is used is drawing you in by showing us that
the artist is going to be featured in the magazine as the
main story. The body language shows us that this
magazine has personality and fun to it.
Left third is when you have information placed
on the left side. This is done because of the way
magazine will be placed on the shelves. The way
that the magazine would be placed on the
shelves is that the right side is covered up and
most of the left side is shown , which means
that it grabs attention and attracts fans to buy it.
Footer is placed on the bottom of the
page because it highlights who else is
going to be featured in the magazine.
By having it placed on the bottom it
shows us that this magazine has a lot of
information not just about one artists
but other artists as well.
Header shows us that it attracts particularly the
target audience and it’s unique and the word special
shows us that its an extra word that attracts the
audience attention.
Main cover line shows us that it is the secondary main
story in the magazine and by having it placed on the right
hand side shows us that it is not crowded with other
information. Also it stands out by being bold and big and
its separated from the rest of the information.
Pull quote is when the quote has
been used to represent the
image and connotes what the
image is trying to say.
Date/barcode/price is placed right at the
bottom of the page on the side which is
surrounded with images and text and is not
properly visible and the attention is not drawn
their which indicates that people will buy the
magazine no matter what the price is.
3. Audience
• Who is the target audience? The target audience
for this magazine would be people who listen to
the genre of hip hop
• How does NME attract it audience? The NME
attracts the audience by having the use of the
artist Dizzee Rascal. This is because he is a well
known hip hop artist and by having the image of
him placed in the middle it would grab the
persons attention as it positioned in the middle
and is really big.
4. Contents page
Band index- there is a lot
of information on the side of
the page. Showing us that the
artist is important.
Main image-represents inde genre
because of the way the lady has been
represented by her hair style and the way she is
dressed. Also the image looks like a suitcase by
having it open and having stuff in it which
connotes the idea of travelling .
Drop cap- the drop cap has gone four sentences
down. The drop cap on this page would be ‘T’ which
starts at the start of the first sentence.
Copy/editorial- the editorial is not very clear but you find
that there is a lot of information there about the band and how they
tour. It would be informal as it is aimed to teenagers.
Subscription box-by having a
subscription box at the bottom shows that
when people subscribe it is a good way
earning and making money from that.
Masthead/contents- the
masthead has been used at the top of the
page and is again in red which connotes the
idea of a newspaper and that the
information is going to be new and fresh.
Also the colours red and white are eye-
catching as they are in bold and big.
Contents/ heading/subheading-
by having subheading on the right side of the
page shows us that there is more information in
the magazine
5. Drop cap – the drop-cap that has been used on this page is
that you find it to be the letter ‘Y’ and it is 6 sentences down. The
drop cap is in black bold font to grab the readers attention there
and they would read rather than just getting distracted by the
image or title. The layout of the text is in four columns which is
what you would usually find in other magazines.
Main image- the main image is of Dizzeee
Rascal. This is because it shows you who the
artist is and who the text next to it is about. The
image is a medium long shot so you can see the
artists amongst the background. You can see
what the artist is doing and it shows you that he
is spraying graffiti on the background and is on a
lookout so he doesn’t get caught by anyone. The
colour of his jacket , red, links with the title
‘NME’ that has been used on the previous pages
which links them together.
Secondary image- the secondary image
links with main image because of how you the
glasses fallen and some empty. The image of the
radio shows the target audience that he is about
music as well as being involved in crime before. By
having the secondary image on the second page
shows you clearly what the text is saying.
The title links with the image because of the
font that has been used. The font that has
been used would be bold black. This has been
done because it signifies negative stuff that
has happened and a dark place to be in as
there is a use of smudges in the title. also it
shows crooked behaviour by how it is not
layout in a straight line as it has the words
below one another. The word ‘TAGS’ and
Riches’ are in capital which shows that ‘Tags’
was part of his past but being rich is in the
present and in the future.
6. • Identify the elements that connect the 3 different parts of the
magazine?
• The first element would be the colours that are used. The colours
connect the 3 different parts of the magazine because you find that
they are used on the same pages and they are red , white and black.
• The second element would be the image of Dizzee rascal. This is
because by having the artist or having the artist mentioned on the
pages connects the magazine together because of how they are
constantly mentioned throughout.
• The third element would be the target audience. The target audience
connects the 3 different part of the magazine together because they
are all aiming at the same genre and within the magazine it should
do that otherwise the stuff in the magazine wouldn’t connect with
the front cover or the things in the magazine.
