Paying College Athletes
There has been a huge debate about paying college athletes. Many people have their own
opinions on this very wide topic. One man in particular has his own opinion. He says there are
many cons to paying college athletes. (Karaim) He states that not all athletic organization make
profit so paying those athletes would just take more than what they even get.(Karaim) Not
everyone is making the money society makes it look like they are making.(Karaim) Most
organizations are only a profit to the institution instead of pocketed for that individual
sport.(Karaim)
He states that athletes are not employees of the place of study. (Karaim)They are not
professionals and it is not their career. (Karaim) The athletes get college with their sports. (Karaim)
They get their funds for school, tuition, scholarships, books, etc.(Karaim) They are doing a lot for
the athlete’s already why should they have to give them anymore.(Karaim) A lot of athletes even
get out of college without having to pay anymore expenses. (Karaim)These expenses include ones
that most kids will have to pay back at some point. (Karaim) They give athletes so much because
they know between practices and lifting and everything it would be nearly impossible to afford the
things they need because it’s so impossible for them to have jobs. (Karaim) He does agree that the
athletes both male and female should have more money given to them through scholarships that
they can earn but the money should be given to them for no reason.(Karaim) I believe that he is
saying the athletes are making plenty off of their scholarships and the fact that they cover the
expenses of books, room and board, and everything else. I completely agree that they should get

more from their scholarships because they have no way to have a job with all the practicing and
training they do.
Though that was one man’s debate, there are still many more. Some people just don’t
understand why athletes don’t get paid for what they do. Sports find interest in so many people all
over but the players aren’t really gaining anything for it. (Sack)They struggle to make good grades
while keeping people interested in their sport.(Sack) A former football player named Huma argues
that they already do get paid.(Huma) He says that NCAA gives them a scholarship to do their
service which is playing the sport.(Huma) He does state however that COPA, an organization for
helping college students is just asking that they will have more help from scholarships.(Huma)
Huma says he isn’t asking to actually get a professional salary. (Huma)He thinks that they should
at least get enough to cover their living expenses. I believe Huma is just saying that he believe that
college athletes need to atleast make enough to cover what he needs. He believes that they are
getting paid but he thinks it would be helpful and reasonable to give enough in scholarships to
clear the extra debt.
An article I found from the “BIG COLLEGE” states that NCAA was using names and
forms of players represent the teams and make the game more interesting.(Sack) One professional
basketball player, Ed O’Brannon filed an antitrust lawsuit against NCAA stating that the players
were owed millions that they’ll never see and they want their share.(Sack) Anything that has their
name or face on it they should be getting paid for it and they aren’t seeing a penny.(Sack) This
argument is different than the last.(Sack) They believe that they should get paid because they do
make so much money. (Sack)The economy has changed a ton the past few decades.9Sack) Its
millions of dollars difference. (Sack)If the NCAA is really making that much money why are they
not sharing with the players?(Sack) It isn’t fair to the extremely unwealthy athletes that go to the

school just for the sport and can’t afford much of anything else.(Sack) If they are working hard
enough to make such a big company millions of dollars why should they be struggling through
college?(Sack) I believe that the author is saying that if they are going to use that names of the
player they should make profit.(Sack) Theygame is shown as them being in it because that’s what
the fans love and want to see.(Sack) It’s what is making the money and selling the game that
everyone loves. (Sack)While someone else makes the money that they worked so hard for they are
sitting at college stressing over not having money. If they make the money they should earn
some.(Sack)
There was a plan to help out college athletes called CAP. (Sack)The CAP act will help
college athletes a ton. (Sack) It will give them money depending on their performance and
attendance. (Sack)It extends scholarships than can last till senior year. (Sack) Full cost of
attendance to NCAA most recognizable and funded sports and teams.(Sack) They can even quit
college and come back and use it as long as they haven’t yet achieved their degree.(Sack) If the
athletes are to get injured during season or at all the act will cover it fully.(Sack) Nocost to anyone.
(Sack)The athletes are even given the right to do whatever it takes to make their name grow and
known. (Sack)As long as the institution isn’t shown. The act has not yet been passed but they are
looking into it.(Sack)
The next article I found on paying college students states the facts about NCAA. It says
that when it was established in 1905 the bylaws stated that to be in the NCAA you must be amateur
to be eligible to play in athletic competition. (Schneider) They were said to be amateur so they
wouldn’t get caught up with the enterprises of professional sports. (Schneider) Therefore they
aren’t going to overlook the bylaws and pass paying the amateur athletes. (Schneider) This article

is saying that they aren’t supposed to be playing like a pro to be in college sports so they shouldn’t
be paid like one.
The final source I found believes that even though the college athletes aren’t exactly
professional, they are professional entertainers. (Kiplinger) Everyone loves college football. It
defiantly brings in a lot of money.(Kiplinger) Money that should be shared with the people that
bring it in. (Kiplinger) She states that it isn’t their fault they have to be enrolled to play.
(Kiplinger)It maybe that all they want to do is play football and this is the only way they can do it.
(Kiplinger)College athletes aren’t allowed to sign contracts at 18 right out of high school or most
of them would give the chance. (Kiplinger) She argues that if they were allowed to go pro right
out they would be wealthy enough to pay their own college and not have to worry about
it.(Kiplinger) I believe that she is saying that the students don’t have a chance to go pro and make
their own money or they would. They would take the money they made from being professional
and get their own education.
Credibility is built when you find information and you give credit to the person. It is very
easy to get misinformation. Misinformation is caused when there is information you put or find on
the internet or a book and you don’t have facts about it. Especially if you don’t know anything
about it the topic. To prevent the spread of misinformation you can make sure the source is
professional.
