What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
TimeInc. Have a huge audience that visit their website and magazines often.
This would be perfect for my magazine ‘SHUFFLE’ as it would increase its
audience size dramatically in a short period of time, whereas if I chose an
alternative, it may not shoot up to the same degree.
Music magazines-Time Inc. (IPC)
“First for music news and the home of the
world’s most iconic music magazine, NME
delivers the definitive verdict on
everything that matters in music.”
“Uncut has been twice voted the PPA
(Professional Publishers Association)
Magazine of the Year and the PPA
International Magazine of the Year.”
TimeInc. already produce two huge music magazines that are similar to mine but
focus on different genres. This will benefit my magazine as the TimeInc. audience
will have an interest in my magazine, and could potentially switch ‘UNCUT’ and
‘NME’ readers in to ‘SHUFFLE’ readers. TimeInc. will benefit me with production
as they have a good knowledge of the subject area.
TimeInc. have a total of 12 offices globally. This gives my magazine an
opportunity to be produced across the world, dramatically increasing
my audience and advertisement by word of mouth. This will also give
me an opportunity to find out more about up and coming artists and
give more features that aren’t seen in other magazines.
Why I’ve chosen TimeInc.
• Don’t currently produce a indie-rock based music magazine
• AllowsTimeInc. to start in a new market with a different target audience to
before (create a new prospective to the business)
• Increase customers for both SHUFFLE andTimeInc.
TimeInc. (IPC) produce both ‘NME’ and ‘UNCUT’ which are both similar to my magazine and target audience.
NME is mainly associated with rock, indie and alternative music. My magazine primarily focuses on Indie,
however touches on rock. UNCUT
I believe TimeInc. would be an appropriate media institution to distribute my media product as they would
have experience in producing music related magazines. Despite already producing similar magazines, I believe
it would benefit not only myself but TimeInc. as well, as their target audience would have a wider range of
music magazines to choose from. It would boost my success as I would be guaranteed a large audience that
would be interested in my product, therefore my sales would be dramatically larger than an alternative. This is
due to a similar target audience age range (early teens to young adults) with NME. Not everyone would be
interested in trying an alternative to NME as it is hugely successful with its audience, however my product
could prove to be a challenge/competitor to the likes of NME. TimeInc. may be interested in producing my
media product as it could improve their sales figures and target audience, expanding the company overall.
NME and UNCUT mainly target their products on the male audience as most of their front covers star male
artists. As my target audience includes both male and females, it could increase the size of TimeInc.’s target
audience.
