This project seeks to help solve the problem of substance abuse and
addiction by breaking the cycle of addiction among the youth who are
credulous victims and also help establish conducive standards by providing
a therapeutic environment where they will be given the required treatment
through counselling and rehabilitation.

It is very disheartening to all and

the ladder of development, an
increasing number of our youth,
supposedly the spine of our growth,
are taking to drugs, which ruin their
lives and drag the nation’s progress.

Even though drug abuse and
addiction is an unfortunate situation
that is taking the better part of the
youth nowadays, the number of
youth engaged in it increases every
day.
According to the 2007 World Drug Report by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, 21.5% of
Ghanaians, aged from 15 to 64, smoked marijuana or used another cannabis product in 2006.
The report continues that Ghanaians use drugs more than five times the world average, which,
as a result, has made Ghana the leader of African countries and third in the world in cannabis or
marijuana behind Papua new Guinea & Micronesia

LIFE STYLE OF DRUG ADDICTS IN GHANA
Since there is no drug addiction rehab facility to cater for such people ,they end up eventually at
the psychiatric hospitals.

PROBLEMS IDENTIFIED
Stigma attached to addicts visiting psychiatric
hospitals
GENERAL CHALLENGES THE REHAB SEEKS TO SOLVE
Economic sector: huge sums of money spent on illicit
drugs.
Health sector: mortality rate caused by substance and
narcotic abuse.
Educational sector: alarming rate of drug addiction among
the youth
social: stigmatization, integration
Out of the 594 drug-related cases admitted to the Accra Psychiatric
Hospital in 2007, 400 were cannabis-related, 141 alcohol-related
and 53 were cocaine and heroin users,

OUTPATIENT SERVICE
Special study
INPATIENT SERVICE
Outpatient service offers treatment to patients
without staying overnight. Provides flexible times
that allow individuals to participate in both their
daily affairs and treatment. It is common to continue
outpatient treatment after a 90-day drug rehab
program has been completed.
The inpatient service is normally inpatient facilities. During this
time, patients live at the facility and interact with their peers
and doctors. This allows for medical care to be available at all
times, which is perfect for those who may have psychological
dependencies that need assistance.

FUNCTION OF THERAPEUTIC GARDEN
- Aid in clinical treatment injury and illness (e.g. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, physical
disabilities)
- Provide a positive distraction from illness and concerns
- Reduce stress and blood pressure.
- Normalize the environment, the setting, offer more “real life” application for treatment.
- Improve mood, function and socialization.
Therapeutic garden: A therapeutic garden includes aspect that promotes restoration and
more than any other garden types. The purpose of a therapeutic garden is the intent to
support the patient’s cure and recovery in the medical environment. It can imply
treatment or a remedy with the expectation of a positive measurable outcome.

Brief Development
This design seeks to involve the community in the treatment and rehabilitation of people with several levels of drug addiction. Due to the
nature of the de addiction treatment, it makes it very difficult for families or community to wean the victims of the addiction; therefore
there is a need for such a facility to house them and provide them with all the necessary amenities to help in their recovery and
rehabilitation.

Conceptual site planning
SITE EXISTING
N
The Site is gently inclined
towards south about 10
degrees with respect to the
north facing upwards
The Site has slopes rising about
1m from the extreme north and
500mm from the east
The Site has a huge vegetation with
different species of trees plants which
will be invaluable for the establishment
of the proposed therapeutic gardens
The Site’s major access road is
directly from the front .
There is possible secondary road
which can equally have access to
the site through the hospital
The Site is divided into (3) basic zones.
The public zone like the main detox block, should be facing towards
the road.
Semi-private zone like inpatient activities and cafeteria come in the
middle
Private zone : accommodation
