The passage is a letter from John reassuring believers that though antichrists have come, signaling the last days, believers have been anointed by God and have knowledge through the Holy Spirit. John encourages believers by reminding them that though some have left the faith, showing they were not truly of them, believers have overcome the evil one and their sins are forgiven through Christ. He exhorts believers to abide in Christ by keeping his commandments and walking as he walked, and to not love the world or things of the world, which are passing away, but to do the will of God to abide forever.

He doesn’t want people to doubt themselves... the false teachers are again spreading lies. If you are upset with a brother, or they aren’t very loving to you, then they aren’t real.

His spirit dwells inside us....... He is the good in us all
When we get out of the way, and are tuned into his spirit in us, THEN we are the people of God

John Stott: -- This explains how the lives of 3,000 people were transformed on the day of Pentecost. It was not that they had discovered new evidence concerning the resurrection or the deity of Christ. That objective evidence had been there ever since Easter morning. It was the activity of the Spirit ‘testifying’ to the truth and to the person of Christ that brought a multitude to faith, as they repented, found forgiveness and were baptized (Acts 2:36–41). It is still the same today.
You can KNOW the truth, but never awaken to it, act on it, or commit your life
