 What Gadgets Do the Students Have?
 iPods, iPhones, iPad have many uses, but
  don’t run Flash
 Nintendo DSi connects to the internet,
  Nintendo DS does not
 Tablets, Smart Phones
 Laptops, Netbooks, eReaders
Communicate with Parents
 Do you have the support of your parents?
 Is your school community receptive to sending
  technology to school?
 Send home BYOT procedures and documents for
  parental permission
 Host an information session with parents
 Make sure parents understand that the students are
  responsible for the devices – Not the School!
Classroom Strategies
 How will you take care of the technology?
 Develop rules and procedures for how the devices
  will be used in the classroom
 Is it alright is students use each other’s gadgets?
 How will student know when it is time to “power
  down” their devices?
 Always lock the classroom when leaving devices
 inside
Practice Day
 Be sure to have students bring devices and
  test the connectivity and the functionality of
  apps and other programs before the actual
  lesson
 Have students explore the possibilities of
  their gadgets
Transforming Instruction
 Literacy Tasks – First, you may have to focus on the
  digital literacy level of your students while they learn
  the technology
 Adapting Tasks – Next, you might be just adapting
  what you are already doing in your class to incorporate
  student technology
 Transforming Tasks – Move to developing high-level,
  challenging activities that would be impossible
  without the use of technology!

  • 3. Survey Students  What Gadgets Do the Students Have?  iPods, iPhones, iPad have many uses, but don’t run Flash  Nintendo DSi connects to the internet, Nintendo DS does not  Tablets, Smart Phones  Laptops, Netbooks, eReaders
  • 4. Communicate with Parents  Do you have the support of your parents?  Is your school community receptive to sending technology to school?  Send home BYOT procedures and documents for parental permission  Host an information session with parents  Make sure parents understand that the students are responsible for the devices – Not the School!
  • 5. Classroom Strategies  How will you take care of the technology?  Develop rules and procedures for how the devices will be used in the classroom  Is it alright is students use each other’s gadgets?  How will student know when it is time to “power down” their devices?  Always lock the classroom when leaving devices inside
  • 6. Practice Day  Be sure to have students bring devices and test the connectivity and the functionality of apps and other programs before the actual lesson  Have students explore the possibilities of their gadgets
  • 7. Transforming Instruction  Literacy Tasks – First, you may have to focus on the digital literacy level of your students while they learn the technology  Adapting Tasks – Next, you might be just adapting what you are already doing in your class to incorporate student technology  Transforming Tasks – Move to developing high-level, challenging activities that would be impossible without the use of technology!
