An employment and labor attorney for 32
years, Mindy Farber is also an active
participant in animal rescue. When animals
are neglected and abused, they are
temporarily housed in a shelter. Ideally, these
animals are returned to their owner or
adopted by a new one, but only about half of
the animals put into shelters ever find a
home. The other half must be euthanized due
to the overcrowded conditions at many
shelters. Through the efforts of individuals
like Mindy Farber, abused and abandoned
animals are given a new chance at life
through adoptions and donations.

Home to virtually every type of domesticated
animal, including birds, rabbits, and horses; a
shelter's main population typically consists of
dogs and cats. When determining length of
stay, shelter operators consider several
factors, including the health of the animal and
its likelihood for adoption. The average stay
lasts five days.

Approximately 5,000 animal shelters operate
in the United States. These nonprofit
agencies may be run by local governments’
animal control services or by independent
entities. Although no national organization
supervises the nation’s shelters, the Humane
Society of the United States, the Society for
the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and
other groups provide the funding and
guidelines for running the shelters.
