Introduction
The Internet is defined as the worldwide system that connects millions of computers together to share
and to communicate.(Smaldino, 2012) As for the Wikipedia [1], the Internet is a global system that
interconnected computers through the network and complicated network protocol. The internet was
developed by the United States of America as new military invention during the years of the Cold
War. (Sahin, 2011) Following the widespread of the World Wide Web (WWW) Internet has increase
influence over human lives with widely ownership and easy accessibility of Internet computer in the
society. Usage of Internet among students and society members has increased over the year as the
Internet became an important part of every human life. (Cho et al.2005, Sahin, 2011) Internet weaves
through human lives from shopping, communication via the wide use of social networks and new
form of medium to meet with new people by using Facebook, and etc. (Sahin, 2011)
According to statistics done by World Internet Stats on December 31, 2011 [7] there was an estimated
2,267,233,742 Internet users worldwide which covered 32.7% of the world's population. A study by
United Nations’ International Telecommunication Union (ITU) jointly conducted with the Georgia
Institute of Technology [3] on the Internet in Malaysia in 2000, 31% of primary and 54% of
secondary schools already had computer facility such as computer lab , while 10% of primary and 34%
of secondary schools had Internet access. The study also found that 13.4 % or more than 3.9 million
Malaysians are active Internet users.
According to Wikipedia [2], the Internet has started to penetrate Malaysia society since 1995.
According to the usage and population statistic survey done in June 2009 by Internet World Stats [4],
there are 16, 902,600 Internet users which equals to 64.6% of the Malaysian population with 90 % of
at least 5 years active users are youth aged around 15 to 2 years old.

Recently, under Malaysia year 2014 Budget [5], the government will spend RM$1. 8 billion to
develop the second phase high speed broadband (HSBB) project in partnership with the private sector
to provide additional Internet coverage and facilities for 2.8 million households nationwide mainly in
urban areas.
Therefore, this survey is aimed to explore the Internet usage among small sample of 13 years old
teenagers to seek answers to further study of implications of Internet among adolescent and teenagers.

Aim of the Study
This survey is carried out to examine the relation between Internet usage and gadget ownership
among the students. The following are questions needed to be answered from this survey.

Materials and Methodology
Sampling Method

survey nonprobability sample method. The nonprobability sampling chosen for this survey is
convenience sampling that save time and ease data collection procedure.
Study Group
The students that take the survey come from Kuala Lumpur area secondary school named Sekolah
Menengah Kebangsaan Jinjang. The study group comes from 1A10 class with 43 students. Selection
of this sample group happens to be one of the classes teach by the researcher. The class is made out of
22 (51%) males and 21 (49%) females with their age averagely 13 years old each. Selected students

Data is collected by using Microsoft Excel and converted into colorful pie charts and bar charts. The
sample of the survey form is included in the appendix. Students from a form one class are brought to
the computer lab to complete the survey within 10 minutes given to every participant. They are
required to answer and complete the survey on 28 of October 2013 under the monitor of the
researcher with minimal guidance and help. The language uses in this survey is mainly Malay with
simple grammar construct to ease the students understanding about each item in the survey form.
Data Analysis Procedure
From the survey of 43 students, the collection of data is presented by using the Microsoft Excel data
sheet and chart generate function. Simple statistic calculation such as percentage and suitable chart
are used to display data.
