It is an issue that humans faces emotionally, yet it goes unnoticed. A psychology state of mind, a hateful way to get into someone’s mind using harsh languages to benefit someone else for the greater good. Starting Draft “Brandon Turley didn't have friends in sixth grade. He would often eat alone at lunch, having recently switched to his school without knowing anyone. While browsing MySpace one day, he saw that someone from school had posted a bulletin -- a message visible to multiple people -- declaring that Turley was a "fag." Students he had never even spoken with wrote on it, too, saying they agreed. Feeling confused and upset, Turley wrote in the comments, too, asking why his classmates would say that. The response was even worse: He was told on MySpace that a group of 12 kids wanted to beat him up, that he should stop going to school and die. On his walk from his locker to the school office to report what was happening, students yelled things like "fag" and "fatty." "It was just crazy, and such a shock to my self-esteem that people didn't like me without even knowing me," said Turley, now 18 and a senior in high school in Oregon. "I didn't understand how that could be." (Elizabeth Landau, 2018)” Talk about how Turley feels when his fellow classmates discuss such a little word that means so much harm in the making. How long do you think that Turley could recover from this? Imagine one of your friend, weather your friend is a child or an adult going through a similar experience but through Facebook or Facebook messages. Would you be able to speak out on the behalf of yourself and realize what is happening? Cyberbullying is a complex predicament that we face around the globe. It is an issue that everyone faces emotionally, somehow it goes unnoticed. Child Poverty In America
Child Poverty In America

Family and school represent the primary institutions that structure children’s lives. When family is not able to provide the safety and stability a child needs, that child’s school performance may suffer. Social workers are called to bridge the worlds of school and home with the role of ensuring that families have the support needed for their children to be able to succeed in the academic environment. To prepare consider the following scenario: Jon, a 9-year-old African American boy, was removed from his home due to maltreatment and placed in a foster home headed by a Caucasian lesbian couple. The social worker is considering permanency planning. The foster family loves Jon and would be willing to adopt him. Jon likes his foster family but wants to return to his biological family. Due to his biological parents’ substance abuse, it is not clear whether or not they will be able to regain custody. Explain the developmental and ecological factors that need to be taken into consideration when serving this child and family. What might be the role(s) of a social worker in supporting Jon and both his biological and foster families? Segal, E. A., Gerdes, K. E., & Steiner, S. (2019). An introduction to the profession of social work: Becoming a change agent (6th ed.). Boston, MA: Cengage Learning. .

2Today’s Family Structures David Sacks/Digital Vision/Thinkstock Learning Outcomes After reading this chapter, you should be able to do the following: ሁ Describe various characteristics of single-parent families ሁ Explain some of the unique challenges facing both caregivers and children in foster families. ሁ Discuss some of the issues faced by adoptive families. ሁ Examine grandparent-headed families and their unique challenges. ሁ Explore characteristics of teen-parent families, their challenges, and ways that schools and commu- nities can support them. ሁ Describe the characteristics of cohabiting couples and their children. ሁ Examine gay and lesbian families, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) children, focus- ing on their particular challenges, dynamics, and ways that children’s and other programs can work with and support these families. © 2016 Bridgepoint Education, Inc. All rights reserved. Not for resale or redistribution. Introduction Introduction While researchers have historically viewed the two-parent, biological family as the norm in U.S. society, there have always been many other family structures and types in this country, to some degree. Historically, many American families, especially immigrant families, were comprised of large and extended families (Wardle, 2013b). After the Civil War (1861–1865), many families consisted of single-parent female-headed households due to the levels of casu- alties of men in war. Some family structures have only recently been acknowledged, such as those headed by same-sex couples. For a variety of reasons, the portion of the population in other types of family structures such as blended families, dual-custody divorced families, grandparents raising grandchildren, teen parents, and single-parent families has dramatically increased over the past several decades. The discussion of various family structures in this chapter is not an attempt to compare them to the traditional nuclear family (two parents raising their biological or adoptive children)— what is termed a deficit view of the family. A deficit view is generally very limited in scope, as it compares a construct or concept (in this case, families) with an ideal and in turn may perceive ways in which it differs from the ideal as deficiencies. The aim of discussing various family structures, then, is to provide professionals working with families a firm understand- ing of these family structures and acknowledge that each has unique needs. This awareness can improve professionals’ ability to provide support, advice, and if necessary, access to out- side resources. Central to our discussions of various family structures is a concept known as family well- being. Family well-being covers a wide variety of factors including the overall physical and psychological health of a family, high levels of self-esteem, a sense of power, and an internal locus of control. Internal locus of control is a sense t ...
