- 2. About Green Harmony NGO, registered under the Societies Registration Act XXI – 1860 on 4 th February, 2009. Works with Vulnerable communities Facilitates a decentralised bottom up movement leading to harmony and equity Vision Green-Harmony envisages a human development paradigm, which is harmonious to the nature with equal opportunities to all irrespective of place, caste, race, creed or gender.

- 5. Trees for Credit Background Tree Plantation and conserving environment has gained momentum with more and more NGO and government projects. ( An Enabling Environment ) But protecting such trees is found to be challenging ( An issue ) Those, particularly the poor, who are most affected with environmental problems are often excluded in developing strategies ( A need for Inclusion ) They are mostly ignorant about environmental issues , and climate change in specific ( A need for creating awareness ) Even though they contribute less to environmental degradation, they remain the most vulnerable ( A need for Capacity Development and Alternate Livelihood ) The poor, particularly the women, are often more sensitive to planting and protecting environment. ( An Opportunity )

Trees for Credit Concept Self Help Group Plants a certain number of Trees and protect them for a few months Loans made available to the SHG, to start an Income Generation Activity Interest of the loan waived based on survival rate of trees SHGs conserve the trees for a longer time, at least two years.

Trees for Credit Value & Potential One partnering SHG sequestrate 1 tonne carbon per year - It is equivalent to 1 CER, that cost around Rs.800 at present - There are more than 5 million SHGs with bank account in India Trees provides shade and cooling, for the participating communities as well as improves the ecosystem health and the climate Secondary Benefits from trees such as fruits, firewood and timber Environmental fund works for the benefit of the disadvantaged as well. (environmental projects enhances livelihood ) Effective and efficient protection of newly planted trees An excellent entry point to create environmental awareness and to initiate ‘adaptation’ at grassroots

- ACTION RESEARCH Green-Harmony will undertake action research in different geo cultural contexts, to develop location specific approaches and practices for a better model of human development that is harmonious with nature. Action research, for Green-Harmony, means learning from actions that are led by community members to address their most challenging issues and environmental changes, employing participatory processes. It will be an iterative learning process, generating knowledge for communities and facilitators alike. New approaches and technologies generated from this learning would be up scaled, but again with continuous monitoring and iterative learning for fine-tuning them. However, it is important to note that new approaches or technologies would not be always necessary to address many issues as traditional wisdom often has time tested answers. Therefore, the process of action research also involves identifying and reviving appropriate traditional practices and approaches through a participatory process. NETWORKING AND COLLABORATIONS Sharing of knowledge and best practices is envisaged with networking and collaborations with community based institutions, nongovernmental organisations, development practitioners, academicians and government institutions. Green-Harmony will also become an active member of established networks in the broad area of environment and development. While active networking helps to avoid duplication of efforts in developing appropriate initiatives to address an issue, it would also result in collaborations for up scaling approaches or technologies that have been successfully experimented. However, it would be taken care to ensure only those initiatives that are appropriate for each geo cultural location are promoted while replicating best practices from a different context. COMMUNICATION Since harmonious development would require appropriate and informed choices made by individuals as well as an encouraging socio political environment, Green-Harmony assigns prime importance for developing strategic tools for communication. Effective communications tools and materials including print media, multimedia and web tools will be developed targeting various stakeholders including policy makers, which would be supported by rigorous studies, participatory researches and field leanings

- During the year 10,81,474 SHG were credit linked with banks and bank loan of Rs.11,131.74 crore (including repeat loans) disbursed taking the number of SHG credit linked to Rs.47,07,415 SHG as on 31 March 2009.
