The Video Game Industry
Through a Teenager’s Eyes
By:Lloyd Williams, Michael Nicolella and Pierce Meir
!
Many people only see video games as something to do while they sit on a bus, or in a
doctor’s office, but in reality it is a several billion dollar industry. More than 183 million people
play at least an hour of video games every day. Considering how many people are affected by
them, we have to ask about some of the big problems in the industry. That’s why we sent
Science Leadership Academy’s own Pierce Meier, Michael Nicolella, and Lloyd Williams to find
out the truth about some of the big issues.
Gamer Stereotypes Debunked: The Truth Behind the Controller
What comes to your mind when you think about  a gamer. For most people, it’s a
teenage boy, sitting alone, in his bedroom, or a basement, yelling obscenities into a headset,
drinking Mountain Dew and eating Doritos. This is the stereotypical gamer, but many would
argue that this image is offensive and outdated. This raises the question, who is really playing
games.
!
Today the average age of a gamer is 34, 67% of video households have someone who
plays video games, 45% of gamers are  females, and most gamers have been playing video
games for 12 years. In 2009  the gaming industries gross revenue was 10.5 billion dollars. This
raises the question in such a large industry, how could there be such gross misconceptions?
The simple answer is that the people who play games changed with time, but public perception
didn’t change with it.
!
Back when video games were first becoming popular, they were played almost
exclusively by teenage boys. As these kids grew up, there passion for gaming stayed with
them. This meant that as time went on, the average age of a gamer rose. This also had a
serious affect on the kinds of games being made. 6 out of 10 of the best selling games in 2013,
were rated mature by the ESRB. As gamers matured, they demanded more mature games,
which caused a change in the industry standard.
This still begs the question, why has there been such a sudden influx of female
gamers, and people playing games for the first time, after the age of 30. A big part of it is
thanks to the Nintendo Wii. With more than 100 million systems sold, the wii is the 5th best
selling gaming console. It was also the first major console marketed towards “casual gamers.”
The Wii’s motion controls made gaming intuitive, and accessible for everyone, removing much
of the stigma involved with being a gamer.
Female gamers are quickly growing in numbers. There are more female gamers
today than at any other point in the history of the industry. This is attributed largely to an influx
in strong female characters appearing in video games. It is also a side effect of the quickly
growing feminist movement. A girl is no longer considered undesirable based solely on the fact
that they play video games, so they are more inclined to play. The stigma of playing video
games is also weakened as a result of more female gamers playing, leading to a sort of spiral
where the more females that play games, the more that will want to play games.

2
!
Despite these facts, “casual gamers” are often ridiculed in the gaming community.
People group themselves into categories like “hardcore gamer”, or “real gamer” to
differentiate from those who play the wii, or mobile games. I had a chance to talk to
PopCap’s co-founder, John Vechey about what he thought a real gamer was. Our meeting
was brief, but he did have this to say “I don’t think there is such a thing as a real gamer.
You either play games, and you're a gamer, or you don’t and you’re not. There’s really no
two ways about it. I consider myself a game developer, not a casual developer, or a
hardcore developer, just a game developer.” He went on to say that it wasn’t about the
games that you play but how much you enjoy games.
!
In the end we can all agree that gaming is no longer something that you need to
hide or be ashamed of. It’s gone from being a barely recognized medium, to one of the
biggest industries in the world, and today everyone plays.
Lack of Originality In The Game Industry: A Teenager’s Perspective
What was the last original game that you played?
Think of the games you have played in 2013. Chances are it is probably the most
recent sequel to Call of Duty, or one of the sports games that comes out every year. I see
this as a problem in my eyes. “Why?” you might be asking. Because it is a problem when
there is no originality in video games, or when it just seems like a copied and pasted game.
This wouldn’t be a problem but thing is, people keep supporting it. I think that this tells the
game developers that there is no reason to improve or add to the newer games, because
they are making hundreds of millions of dollars annually. I had a great opportunity to talk to
a few SLA gamers about their opinion of this topic.
I asked Matt of SLA, “Do you think that there is a lack of originality in the video
game industry?” He said: “Yes and I believe its because of consumers. When  Call of Duty
comes out, millions of people buy it each year and they make tons of money. It seems like
when developers see the success of these games, they seem to think that it’s okay to keep
releasing the same thing each year.”
This makes me think of the massive amounts of people who are buying these
games that are released annually. People keep buying it, so it will keep being made. I also
asked Richard of SLA the same question and he said: “Over the years, yes, I do think so
because they're making so many sequels now. So yes, I have noticed that there is a lack
of original video games today.”
I think this shows that at least some people are tired of the generic first person
shooter and if you think about it, it actually hurts the industry because It could discourage
people from getting games because they are not interested in certain genres that are
popularized .
Some of the main games in the game industry are failing to create new and exciting titles
right now. People need to notice that this can be quite bad if things like annual games
become more frequent. And to be fair, Call of Duty is fun to play every once in a while, it
has just been a genre that is overused in my opinion.

Procrastination
By: Amani Bey
It is 3 AM, the house is
silent......almost.  There is the
frantic patterning of your fingers
on the keys. As you type your
report on the importance of the
Civil War, or an analysis of one of
those works by Shakespeare, you
vow to never ever procrastinate
again.
!
Two weeks later, you’re up
again racing against the clock to
submit an assignment. Where did
all the time go? Did the arms
grow legs and run away? And
then you remember, how that
video of a cat surfing or that one
scroll down your timeline took
hours. “I’ll do it in an hour”,
melted into “I’ll do it tomorrow”
and now you’re up at 3 AM, eyes
bloodshot, sunken.
!
You don’t have a problem.
All your friends do it. The next
day, you guys (gals.. whatever is
socially polite) share your battle
stories: who stayed up longer,
how many pages you managed to
do in the least amount of time,
who got a good grade on
something that they did in an
hour.
!
Most people think
procrastination is because we’re
lazy or adrenaline junkies.  They
don’t know how sneaky it can be;
how we can be determined to sit
down and produce work, but it
calls to us, it pulls us in.

5.There’s a gap between
intention and action
6.Removal from comfort
zone makes one retreat
High school students,
like ourselves, are
constantly the victims of
this “put-it-off-syndrome”
and older people dismiss
it as lazy, or ADHD. When
asked, a class of 22 11thgraders said they’d rather
watch tv than do
homework, minus the one
to the contrary (ah, smells
like teen spirit). So the
Procrastination plagues 20% of
question is, how does one make
Americans, but it seems like
themselves do something they
don't want to. Everyday we are
we’re all distracted 100% of the
given ultimatums, pass or fail, do
time, right? It would be safe to
this, so that. So how do we as
say teens make up a good 15%.
self-respecting people make
I’m a chronic sufferer. Do you
ourselves do more stuff we don’t
know how many hours of
want to do? Do we do as wedo
Youtube, crafting the perfect
and then do the work we need to
playlist—see another article in the
do? (Just making sure, you’re still
magazine about this—, and
with me, say that 5 times fast)
tweets went into the production of
this article?
Experts have millions of reasons
as to why people procrastinate so
much, here are the top six I
found:
1. Inability to focus
2. Inability to focus for fear of
failure or success
3. Inability to think about
thinking
4. Boredom

4
Here are 5 Common Tips I found for
stopping procrastination and commentary on
where they usually fall short:
1. Goal setting- Setting smaller goals
inside a large project always seems to
be the answer when handling a task.
It’s the smart and responsible thing to
do, but if you’re like me, the chronic
procrastinator, you spend more time
assigning and reassigning goals and
deadlines than actually completing the
task (you use this method against
yourself and your work becomes
constant revisal of your plan to
actually do something)
2. Spacing out work - This falls into the
first suggestion. Imagine: working on
a paper, and assigning yourself a
section on certain days. Does it
always work? Do you find yourself
jumping around and doing
miscellaneous bits and pieces of
paragraphs? Or do you convince
yourself of going on research binges
or planning more? You exhaust your
production capital for the day and pat
yourself on the back for doing more
than what was asked — having not
finished what needed to be done.
3. More sleep- I have nothing bad to
say about sleep, it is wonderful, and
can do no wrong. It lowers stress and
feels great. There are moments when
sleep is not the most useful thing and

it is chosen by our bodies, willfully or
not.
4. Concentration- There are apps to
block certain websites on your
computer, there’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ on
your phone, but somehow, you feel an
imaginary buzz —people are calling it
textaphrenia —, or you check for just
a second and get pulled in.
Rewards- Rewards are hard sometimes,
you have to really find something that you
want, that you wouldn't normally do Try
Writtenkitten.net , it’s a website that gives
you a new picture of a kitten every time you
type 100 words.

5
There are “experts” have many different
methods for battling procrastination, spacing
work out, setting goals, assigning breaks etc.
But we, as people have to change our outlook
on tasks. Every assignment or task has to be
seen as one  stepping stone closer to the future
you want.
!
Imagine your future as whatever you
want to be and constantly envision each task as
a way to get there. This may seem like an easy
feat, but this is a constant reassignment of how
you feel.
!
“You have to play the game in order to
get the winnings”. Do you think the college
admissions are unfair? Do you think homework

doesn’t help? You have to be the change you
want to see in the world, you have to be
accredited enough to have tried the way society
thinks is right, so you can tell them how wrong
they are.
!
After reading this article, you probably
feel on top of the world and have made the vow
to never procrastinate again, but this will take
time and constant practice. This method, like all
methods is not panacea (a good SAT word,
look it up), but give it a try. With that, I sign off,
wishing you the best of luck!

Miley Cyrus’s New Album
BY: JASMINE NIEVES

Some people think “Bangerz” is an inappropriate album made by Miley Cyrus.
She was such a good girl before and now she changed. She changed because she
wanted people to stop thinking of her as Hannah Montana but as Miley Cyrus the
person. She also made this album to get back with her ex-fiancé, Liam Hemsworth.
Many believe he was the reason for her acting crazily at the VMA’s, EMA’s and ever
since Hannah Montana finished. Many people use to like the old Miley and some still
do. They want the old Miley back and also some like the way she is. Lots of people
were shocked to see her like the way she is now and the way she was acting. Also, lots
of people thought this was to show that she was gaining her independence.

She wants to be the biggest pop star and
take over the world with her music. She still has a
beautiful voice but needs to change a little. We
can’t all deal with the crazy Miley. WE WANT THE
OLD MILEY BACK!!! By the way, how she
expressed her feelings was crazy and all out of
whack because all she wanted was the sex from
guys, show some skin and be known as a crazy
baby. Many people thought she can be the next
Britney Spears by the way she was acting. She
was acting inappropriately in front of her fans and
many people especially other stars, were shocked
to see her the way she was acting. Again I say,

WE WANT THE OLD MILEY BACK!!! She will either continue to act the
way she is or change. It is all her choices, not ours. We are not her, she is. What
some people thought of the new Miley was that she was crazy or people could
just follow in her footsteps and act just like her. That’s not important in life. Being
you is what's most important and nothing else. That should be a lesson learned
for people to know about.

Becoming A Citizen in The
United States
By Chaveliz Nieves

An identity in the United States
is something everyone wants. It
is something that is fought for
daily. And that should not
influence if we get accepted
into colleges with or without
scholarships. Why should being
an immigrant in the United
States affect students decision
of applying to college?
“The Dream Act is bipartisan
legislation that addresses the
tragedy of young people who
grew up in the United States
and have graduated from our
high schools, but whose future
is circumscribed by our current
immigration laws.
Under current law, these young
people generally derive their
immigration status solely from
their parents, and if their
parents are undocumented or
in immigration limbo, most have
no mechanism to obtain legal
residency, even if they have
lived most of their lives in the
U.S. The DREAM Act would
provide such a mechanism for
those who are able to meet
certain conditions”. This means
that if a child was brought to
the U.S at a young age and
lived here their entire life, but
were born in another country
and came here “illegally” then
they will not be able to go to
college. This act will help many
of the students trying to get into
college but can’t since they are
immigrant. “I always have to
validate myself because I am
African American. People
expect me to be a certain way
that I am not. Therefore, I have
to work more than others”.

Amani Bey 17 from Science
Leadership Academy, stated that
“even when being a citizen in the
United States, I have to prove
myself many times because of
who I am.” Students know that
there will be constant competition
for students who will try to get into
college with a full ride scholarship
can be intimidating. Some people
are threatened that the people
who immigrated to the u.s from a
foreign country can get a full ride
scholarship if the dream act is
passed.

Many arguments are made about
this legislation. One of them is that
the “citizens pay taxes and the
immigrants don’t.” But that is not
true. Many “immigrants” in this
country do pay taxes and although
it is not the same amount, it comes
out of some of their check.
According to a source who does
not want to reveal her identity
states that “this is a country for all.
We should be accepted and not
treated like slaves. They have us
working in the fields for hours, yet
we get paid close to nothing.” And
the U.S forgets to recognize this.
These are people and they have
feelings and a family to care for.
Thats why they come to an entire
different country. To feed their
family but they are looked as
aliens to us. The dream act should
be the way to tie the shoelaces to
this country and make it run again.

If we are in such a debt, we may
be able to find the solution in one
of the minds of a child who is
potentially trying to get into
college and is trying to set a
foundation for his future. But if the
u.s as a country is not allowing
that, then we will not be able to fix
our problems.
What I truly don’t understand is if
this country was basically founded
off of immigrants from all around
the world except the natives who
already lived here, why are we so
quick to judge when all of our
ancestors had to leave something
they really loved and valued to be
able to set a new foundation for
this new country they began to call
home?

The Choices We Face
By: Bailey Britton & Jeremiah Cunningham

How old were you when
you lost your virginity?
You may not believe it
but many girls are losing
their virginities as young
as 11. Most of these
girls’ sexual partners are
at least 5 years older
than them, and about
40% of the boys that are
impregnating teen girls
are older than 20.
"Ignoring the age of the
partners, the earlier a girl
was when she first had
intercourse, the greater
her risk of suicide
attempts, alcohol use,
drug abuse, truancy and
pregnancy," Leitenberg
says.

About 1 million teenage girls
in the U.S. get pregnant
each year. 50 percent of
girls are losing their virginity
by the time they go into their
sophomore year of high
school and the earlier you
have sex the more likely
you are to get pregnant.
When teenage girls get
pregnant in high school it is
hard for them to watch their
child and focus on
schoolwork so only ⅓ of
teen mothers complete high
school.

In 2011 over 300,000
children were born to
females between the
ages of 15 and 19. The
government spends
about $40 billion order to
help these teenage
parents with the
hardships of juggling
children and school. If
you are sexually active
and do not use birth
control or a condom you
are 85% more likely to
get pregnant and the
children of teen mothers
are more likely to be born
premature.

Good Vibes Only
There are plenty
places in Philly to skate and
chill with your friends in your
free time. The city is a great
place to discover places to go if
you’re feeling adventurous,
bored, or just want to have
some fun and get out of the
house. Whether you travel by
board or public transportation,
there are so many places in
Philly to just kick it for leisure
time. ✌

South Street
!
South street consists of
places to shop and eat. The
farther away you get from 2nd
street there are stores galore
and the closer you get to 2nd
street the closer you get to
some awesome food place.
You have to be a little older to

go certain places and get the
full effect of South street but
you’ll have a great time none
the less. There’s a skate shop
called Nocturnal between 5th
and south and 6th and south.
South Street is surrounded by
homes but living near South
street isn’t cheap. There’s even
condos near 12th and South
Street. None the less you
discover something new every
time you visit South street.

Paine’s Park
!
Paine’s is a skate park
not too far off from the art
museum. Its a great
environment and hosted go
skate day in Philly this past
2013 which was amazing.
There were two performances
and a couple skate contests.
Its less crowded in the winter
but pretty much packed in the
summer. If you're looking for a
great place to skate Paines is
the place. You can even just
take some friends to Paines
and have a great time and
don’t even have to skate.
Either way you can have a
great time and skate on.

14
Love Park
!
Love park is a spot right
in the middle of Center City. Its
a great place and tourist
attraction but people have
been skating at love park for a
while now. Although skating at
Love isn’t really allowed
anymore security usually will
kick you out but its nice to just
chill by the park’s fountain in
the summer. Around Christmas
time they put a Christmas tree
in the center of the empty
fountain  and put up Christmas
village. Its a great place all
year round with a great view of
all of the city. Love park is a
one of the biggest tourist
attractions in Philly where
people come and take pictures.

The

Conversation
Ever start a conversation that felt
never ending? Or awkwardly tried to end a
deep discussion? “The Art Conversation” was
one of those moments in life. Art is passion. It
comes from the tenderness of the mind and soul.
Roots from
blood dripping
painful
experiences to
the tears of joy
in life... it’s
honest... pure.
Just like a ‘heart
to heart’ conversation that seems everlasting.
This conversation was an opportunity to bring
together the artsy minds of 11 young local artists

look at that you don’t do? What does the
word art mean to you? Who and what are you
inspirations? What advice would you give to
other people?
All of these artist (including myself) love to
share their creations with others who are willing
to look and listen. After reading the artists
profiles, there is a list of places where many
performances happen. A list of places to go to
and hear inspiration. Places where you can meet
many youth (like the ones your about to read
about) and non-youth.
Sweetness is about to invade your
tastebuds as you learn about these flaming artist.

of Philadelphia. Rashuan Williams, “DJ Reezy”.

Art.

“Its a Story... Its a journey... A learning experience... A concept of life...”
-Shania Morris

“I wish I could draw or paint pictures” says 17 year old female MC
Shania. Poetry was the beginning of the journey of becoming a rapper.
Like most people life experiences is what helps create her “Hottest
bars.” Shania enjoys free styling and cyphers. Even when free styling
she only speaks the truth. “no matter the art it should always have a
honest message behind it”

Adam Feliciano “DJ Phazze”

“Love what you do. Everyone has a gift, some are fortunate to discover
it. Take advantage of it!” DJ’ing is his 17 year old Adams passion. It
keeps his sanity and gives him motivation to succeed. Adams
inspiration comes from radio DJ’s. “I have to consider what type of
crowd I am playing for.” Seeing people happy from the music he plays
keeps the inspiration rolling.

Cameron Beckham “BBoy Icaris”

19 year old Cameron, also known as BBoy Icaris says “I love to share
my art on stage.” He performs the art of Break dance. Its expressed
through the human body. To him breaking means anger, happiness
and excitement. Every emotion or thought is told through a story of
body movement. “Music inspires the speed and the movement”

1

17
ART.
“Taking a concept and putting your own style into it ...Its an ambiguous term”
-Alex Harris “Kno Picks”
“Clark park (in West Philly) is my favorite place to to
write. It expresses the diversity of my neighborhood.”
Alex believes that his music challenges the transition
between having fun with words and pursuing a career
in lyricism and performance.
Bailey Britton

I asked Bailey (a 16 year old dancer) “If you could give one last
piece of advice to any artist what would it be..” She replied by
saying “stay committed to what you love. Dance to me means
expressing the way your feel through body movement. Its what I
LOVE!” Reading poetry is one of her secrete things to enjoy doing.
Its secrete because she wishes she could write poetry and
appreciates those who do.

Ronald Harper “Freestyle”
“I have a great stick figure drawling though” says 17 years
young rapper “Freestyle” jokingly as he wished he could draw.
Freestyle gets his inspirations from other artist “I feel like Im
home when I’m with them” he says. He enjoys going to art
gallery’s and believes that art is created at anytime of the day

Finding serenity and inner peace is the reason this 19 year old
poet began to write. Art means “Self-pride, power, and
happiness. Create honest work, be persistent and create things
that have purpose. Once my art is spoken into existence I get a
sense of relief.”

Shaneka Briggs

“My art comes from ALL people, both the loving and those filled with hatred”
-Rashaun Williams
“Casual Encounters”

“We are a group of Philly based musicians who have come
together to put a twist on music. We fuse funk, indie, soul, jazz
and whatever else together to create something completely
different. While being only a few months old we have a lot
ahead and want whoever to take those steps with us.”
-Simone “Avery”

Julian Harris
Julian is the guitarist for the band “The Casual Encounters.” He
started playing the guitar and over the years has become very
passionate about it. This guitarist longs for the day that he can call
himself a “Photographer.” “The world means music.” In other words,
experiences, test and trails is what makes music.

Simone “Avery”
I think the dream to be a drawer has won. Like a few other
artist above Simone (stage name Avery) wishes she could
draw. She is the lead signer and song writer for “The Causal
Encounters.” “Anyone can be an artist she says, “Just do it
because that would be a waste of talent and passion if you
didn’t.”

This drummer doesn’t write the lyrics to the songs because
he wishes to be a creative writer. He surely does make your
toe tap, head nob and body move with the sounds of
drumming. One of his inspiring people in life is Travis Orbin (a
drummer he follows). In Ben’s spare time he likes to read
writings of philosophers. “Dear artist practice, purse clear
goal and ask for help”
Benjamin McCool

THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS
STRESS
January 2014

Have you fallen asleep in class?
Been overeating? Have you been
Irritable, achy, or suffering from
headaches?
If you answered, “yes” to
any of the questions above, you
may be suffering from a form of
stress.
Stress is a very real
aspect of life in today’s society.
More often than not, stress touches
and affects the lives of teenagers
throughout the country. It’s
something that can sometimes be
very difficult to control and cope
with.
If stress goes incorrectly
treated or ignored, it may lead to
negative changes in physical and
mental health, such as anxiety,
mood swings, periods of
depression, substance abuse and
more. Changes in physical health
include upset stomach, trouble
sleeping, muscle tension and chest
pain, headaches and fatigue.

By:Melanie Harrington & Wendy Tepoz
THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS STRESS!
Brooke Maxam, a senior
attending Mattawan High School in
Michigan, faces the pressures of being a
community leader for various sports and
clubs, keeping her grades up, and
maintaining relationships with family and
friends. Maxam admitted, “I am not good
when it comes to how to deal with stress
so, in all honesty, I self-harm.”
!
School, meeting deadlines, family
and friends, sudden changes in a routine
or way of life, taking on
more than you can
handle, changes in
yourself and in your
family, detrimental
experiences. These
are just some things
that normally trigger
stress in a teenager’s
daily life, including the
ones that Maxam deals
with.
It doesn’t help when a parent is ignorant
to their child’s stress triggers and
troubles. There can be different things
that prevent a parent from knowing and
understanding their child’s problems. For
example, lack of communication, seeing
what they want to see, not understanding
what their child deals with from day-today, etc. Not all parents have close
relationships with their children.
However, while a lot of
teenagers keep their stress a secret from
their families, there are some who have

more of an open relationship with their
parents.
!
Even though it is evident that
stress is caused by various things, there
is one that recurs in every teen’s life.
School.
Healthy eating, sleeping and
exercising habits/routines are a great way
to ward off the physical effects of stress.
Brooke Maxam admits that exercising
helps keep her mind away from the
negative coping skill that she picked up.
Breathing exercises and
things like yoga and
meditation help clear the
mind.
Richard Yoeun, a junior at
Science Leadership
Academy in Philadelphia,
PA, advises other students
to, “...take it easy, go with flow, and
meditate.”
Your stress and built up
emotions can be used in constructive
ways to create beautiful masterpieces.
Use your negative energy to create, not
destroy. Engage in an art form such as
painting, drawing, music, dancing and
writing.
!
Margaret Hohenstein, another
junior at Science Leadership Academy,

THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS STRESS!
Even though a lot of the
above advice can be given
to you by any therapist or
counselor, they are still
excellent and effective
ways of coping with stress
levels. However, let’s take
a look at some ways
different high schoolers
around Philadelphia, PA
cope with their stress.
!
Elyse Morales,
junior at the Philadelphia
High School for the
Creative and Performing
Arts, informs, “Some of the
ways I deal with stress are
by drinking tea, making
lists, rewarding myself

when I get stuff done, and
napping.”

said Danny Godwin, a
junior at the Academy of
Palumbo.

“I had to work
harder,” said Raul Antonio
Serrano, a freshman at
Murrell Dobbins in
Philadelphia, PA.
Victoria Jennings
told us, “Some ways that I
deal with the stress is by
reading books or listening
to music.”
“One way I deal
with stress is by playing
and learning songs on
piano and violin. I've taken
up crocheting as well,”

!
Everyone deals
with stress at one point in
their lives so don’t feel
alone. Next time you feel
like life is dragging you
down, grab a friend, talk
about it and don’t forget to
smile. Everything will be
okay in the end and if it’s
not okay, then it’s not the
end.

Glory Daze
by Alex Held and Marlyn Mooney
How good are you in bed? What was the longest you’ve ever gone for? Is it your favorite thing to do?

!
By now, you’ve probably
realized that we’re talking about
sleeping. Sleeping, as we all know, is
an essential part of life. Without it,
you may find yourself feeling like
you’re physically unable to get out of
bed in the morning. Even one hour
less sleep than recommended can
cause a serious drop off in attention,
mood, and motor functions.
Teenagers at SLA have experienced
these things, and mostly do so, every
day. “So why?,” you ask. “It’s only one
hour less of sleep, it can’t make that
much difference.” Well the answer is
not as simple as you may think. Yes,
an hour less or an hour more of sleep
every night can determine how
productive you are daily; however,
that is not the only reason. Eating
before bed can also cause
complications with your sleep as well
as your overall health. Eating right
before you go to sleep can worse
insomnia, the inability to fall or stay
asleep. That’s just the beginning.
More and more reports are being
released
that show the effects of lack of
sleep, including increased
anxiety, depression, bad eating
habits, statistically worsening
test scores by students, and
mood disorders.

!
All of us argue that we stay up late to
finish homework, study, or continue to finish
our project, blaming school for our lack of
sleep. Sleep research professors actually
state that there is physically not enough
hours in the day for students to devote the
appropriate amount of time to all of these
commitments, especially in relation to
school. And, we can’t ignore arguably the
most vital factor in the development of a
teenager: sleep. It is true the older you get
the less sleep you need, meaning teenagers
should average about a good 8-9 hours of
sleep a night.
!
During some interviews SLA students
James Prell and Melanie Harrington stated
they get about “7-8” hours of sleep a night,
however SLA students Teige Dougherty and
Ryan Shaw stated they get about “2-3 hours
of sleep”, if they’re lucky. Surprisingly only
one student of multiple interviews reported
feeling tired at school. Most students report
waking up in the crucial, illegal hours
between 4-6 am.

28
A new study has found that five
times as many high school and college
students are dealing with anxiety and other
mental health issues than youth of the same
age who were studied in the Great
Depression era. It is a proven fact that the
average mental stability of a teenager in
2013, is one of a psychopath in 1960. One of
these reasons is stress induced sleep, with
more fatigue comes anxiety. Anxiety
disorders affect one in eight children.
Teenagers who have anxiety disorders are at
higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss
out on important social experiences, and
engage in substance abuse. Anxiety
disorders also often co-occur with other
disorders such as depression, eating
disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD). The majority of teens with
a stress-induced sleep problem experience it
at least once per week, and more than half
experience it at least several times a week.
Know how you’re always tired after school?
Well that’s because mental stimulation is one
of the most exhausting things for the human
body. When your brain is hard at work, it has
to expend a great deal of energy to solve
computational problems that you are given at
school. An example of this that is both tiring
and constructive as well as something that is
fun would be reading. Yes! Reading is a
great way to spend you’re free time because
if you’re reading something you’re interested
in, you not only enjoy it, you learn from it and
makes you tired so you aren’t restless or
have bloodshot eyes from playing video
games for 4 hours.Taking our fellow
classmates into consideration we decided to
do a test (on ourselves of course) to find
some efficient ways to fall asleep faster and
earlier. Some methods are meditating,
drinking tea, taking sleeping pills, making the
room colder, exercising at least 5 hours
before, counting sheep, or watching
television or movies.

Keep in mind that these vary between
persons so please do not get angry if these
don’t work. First, you can try counting sheep.
Typical, hackneyed, stupid? Wrong. It has been
proving that counting sheep (an activity as
boring as school) relaxes  your mind and helps
you fall asleep faster. Usually teenagers try to
go to bed after hours of technology, at least we
do, and counting sheep is clearing your mind. It
worked for marlyn. 1 marlyn 0 alex. Next, hot
tea. Drinking tea. 0 for Marlyn 0 for Alex. We
just busted a myth, call us myth busters. It
feels good to drink warm liquids, and we think it
relaxes us, so it does. But hey, give it a shot.
No more “just 10 more minutes”. The
next time you’re having trouble sleeping just
remember you are not alone. Teenagers all
over the world can’t sleep, even though it’s the
one thing we want. (something to go with our
game here). Remember when you’re on your
computer on Facebook or watching Netflix, or
playing xbox that you need to surrender and
ruin your kill streak. We understand negotiating
the limits of time spent on technology with a
teenager is never easy but neither is waking up
in the morning.

Maintaining Healthy
Relationships with
Friends and Family
by: Reginald Simmons

In high school, you will come across many different problems that will test your patience and
resolve. It can be one of the
most difficult things in the
world to think rationally
about bad situations during
the initial panic, but you’ll
find that trying your best to
keep a clear head will, in the
long run, leave you a more
peaceful and content human
being. You have to know the
skills that allow you step
back, analyze and solve
efficiently.
The first thing you
should do when you
become involved in an
emotionally charged
situation is step back. Think
about a few underlying
factors. Things like, “Why
are the people involved
reacting the way they are?”
and “What can I do right
now to help the situation?”
should come to mind. Again,
these are hardly ever the
first things that naturally
come to mind during tense
and heated situations, but
no one said it would be easy. It takes a lot of willpower and maturity to to able to look at something from
a new, more selfless perspective.
One of the best courses of action to take when trying to solve a problem with your peers (or
friend outside of school, family member, etc.) is understanding. Of course, this is also one of the most
trying things to do, but with understanding comes acceptance, and with acceptance comes peace. That’s
what the main aspiration should be: peace. Sometimes, you’ll find that in order to establish peace
between you and someone else, you have to sacrifice something. Sometimes, you will have to
compromise. In most cases, the person, or people, you’re in an argument or altercation with are those
least likely for you to see as someone you’d like to have a peaceful relationship with, but that’s where the
perspective comes in. You have to realize what’s worth what. Though it isn’t easy, the resolving of issues,
whether school-related, home-related or otherwise, leads to a decrease in stress levels. Stress is not

30
!
only an emotional burden, but
a physical one as well. High stress
levels lead to things like sleepdeprivation, appetite loss and mild
paranoia. Not only are these very
unhealthy byproducts, they’re also
unpleasant. And what’s worse,
sometimes a person under high stress
has no idea how they’re being affected
by it. As teenagers, we are even more
prone to these side-effects, and
sometimes even less aware. Make it a
point to every once in a while take a few
minutes aside to really think about how
you’re feeling. Is there anything bothering you or affecting your mood? If so, try to think through it before
you add it to your list of problems (if you’re like me, there’s always some list of problems that you have at
any given moment). There may be a very simple fix to it that becomes clear after a little meditation.
Besides generally being able to maturely and peacefully solve spats with peers, friends,
relatives or anyone, having the skills to collaborate with others and overcome obstacles will lead to an
easier time working in groups on school projects, and in adult life, in any case where working with other
people on a task is a requirement.
In order to understand how to deal with powerful emotions, both positive and negative, in a
healthy way, an understanding of the source of those emotions is paramount. Knowing the stem of a
problem is key in figuring out how to solve it. In a sense, it’s like mathematics. In order to solve a system
of equations, the first step is finding the values of however many  variables there are. Then, checking to
make sure the numbers run is the final and most important step.
In school, there are many different sources for stress. Things like projects, homework, trouble
with friends or difficulty in class can seem like dire situations. This is inevitable and natural. But certain
steps need to be taken to insure the survival of your sanity. Letting problems pile will result in a very
unpleasant emotional experience overall.

Attention to my early 2000
babies(a.k.a my E’20’s or my late 90’s
babies), we were born in the late 90’s, but our
most memorable times were in the early 2000‘s.
Therefore, we shall tip our hats and salute our times
with this honorable mention. No longer will we be
dragged down by 90’s babies, and their fun times, but
brought up by “our” welcoming, grand appearance, of the
21st century.
We flipped through tv stations click-by-click with our remotes to
some of the hottest shows. From Spongebob Squarepants to the
Fresh Prince, our laughs immersed the globe. We ran to our tv’s just
to watch The Simpsons at 6:00, because we didn’t have the pause or
record button. It was if “you missed it, you missed it”. The only way
something was recorded or paused was on V.C.R. Every movie was put on
V.C.R, and if you didn’t have one, going to the movies was everything to you.
Characters were constantly singing, smiling, and twirling around in their lands;
and you did the same thing right along with them. You walked around your house
constantly singing everywhere you went, because Disney Movies movies showed
that it was okay to sing for every problem you faced. Now, all your parents and
guardians consistently tell you to do is “Shut Up” or “Close the door”, but you don’t care
because Timon and Pumba told you “no worries” with “Hakuna Matata”. It was Timon
and Pumba who taught you slang first. Not,Drake,Lil Wayne,or someones grandma down
the street. Everything you did as a child could always be fixed by laughing, dusting off your
hands, and just saying “Hakuna Matata, means no worries.” That’s all our childhood was when
you were young, just laughing, bouncing, and playing around.
“Bubble
Gum,
Bubble
Gum, In a
dish; how many
bubble gums do
you wish?” sports,
jump rope, boardgames,
and bikes were your
activities back then.You
couldn’t go a day without being
outside. If you weren’t outside
playing on your front step, it’s because
you missed your curfew the day before
when the street lights came on.You
remember asking your friend to come knock
on your door to go outside, because you knew
mom wouldn’t say “no” to their little face. You didn’t
mind the dirt on your skirt, and the grass stain on your
shirt, because it meant you could go home and take a
1-foot bubble bath. You believed you were Superman or
Wonder Woman with the towel you wrapped around yourself.
When you realized you couldn't fly and you got the scrape on
your knee to prove it. Your mom whipped out Alcohol, Neosporin,
and a character band-aid,and kissed it to make it better. You would
sleep through the night, and not be awoken by a bell. Your mom came in
your room, nudged you, and said “Rise and Shine”. You walked in the
bathroom and brushed your teeth with “Tooth Tunes”. You went back to your
room, and your mom helped you put on your jumper or helped fit your foot in your
Air force ones. You got in your cars and had to physically roll down your window to
feel the breeze on your face. In your “Toy Story” lunch box was a Lunchables Pizza
version, a fruit roll up, a piece of fruit, and a Hi-C juice to fill you up.  Then, when you got
to school, after your “Pops Cereal” breakfast, you pulled out your wooden pencil, and
received your signed homework out of your “Lisa Franks or Pokemon Folder”. There was no
Jansport, it was “Favorite Character” backpacks or “Rolling on Wheels” that started the day.
However, when lunch time came, it sounded like a choir preaching their voices. You sang countless
songs that you heard on the radio with everybody who you called “friend”.
!
!
The only
thing that could get
you mad was when
someone“threw off your
groove”like Kuzko.
Everything you sung had a
purpose. You sung “Milkshakes”
by, Kelis,when you felt proud.
You sang a throw back of “This is
How we Do It”, by Montell  Jordan when
you wanted to sang old school. When your
crush broke your heart you sang “Cry me a
River”, by Justin Timberlake.You consistently
brought “Sexy Back”, with Timbaland and
Timberlake. Every time the teacher adjusted the
temperature in class, you sung “Hot in Here”by, Nelly.
When you wanted to dance you played “1,2 Step”, by
Ciara, “Crank that”, by Soulja Boy,and finished with the
“Cha Cha Slide”, by DJ Casper. Music surrounded you
everywhere you went from the moment you stepped off your
porch until you got home from school. Music, Games, and TV were
your life, it was all that mattered to you.
!
The 21st century is what made us who we have become. We have
been overshadowed by plenty of other generations before and after us. Some
people even overlook us,and just place us in the “New generation” category. They
say we are apart of a group with no common sense,we constantly degrade
ourselves, and that we will be the generation to bring this society to turmoil.
However,we know the truth,we know who we are,and we will take a stand to let it be
known. You and I were both in the early 2000’s to understand what happened. We
both know we had times of laughter, countless memories, and some of the greatest
awkward moments.Anyone of us can compare to the old days with a smile on our
face. You may love your teenage freedom, your iphones, and your new wardrobe.
However, you can’t forget what made you who you are today, you sexy E20’s baby.

Youth Fight for Adequate
Education
By:Amy Chen

Students chant SOS! Save our
School! SOS! Save our Schools!
We want education, not
incarceration!
On December 16, 2013 at the
School District of Philadelphia
(SDP), students marched into 440
to claim their right to be educated.
Knowing that the Superintendent of
the School District, and the School
Reform Commission (SRC)
members would be there, students
talked about 4 important topics.
What is the role of teachers, how
can students help reconstruct the
district, why are students
disengaged in school, and how can
we improve communication
between the district and the
community?
With the devastating cuts
that Governor Corbett made since
he entered office, Philadelphia’s
schools lost 127 assistant
principals, 676 teachers, 283
counselors, 1,202 noontime aides,

Teachers, parents, and community
activists united together as a whole
and fought for good quality
education for their child, their
community, and their future
generation.
As a facilitator, I rotated from table
to table with the question how can
students help reconstruct the
district? With a vast pool of different
students from different backgrounds
and experiences, I heard many
voices that should be heard.

I asked Helen Gym, a charter
school founder, what she thinks
charter schools offer that district
schools may not.
She told me that charter schools
are “a way to move away from
traditional public education into
the Wild West of an uninformed,
unregulated school choice.” Gym
defines traditional public schools
as “district-managed, unionized
public schools.”

“Charter schools are public
schools but they are not
One of the student who attended a

employees laid off.
When I asked the question,
“What outcome do you hope
for from the SDP, ” a student
from Central said, “You can
not expect a student to
succeed if you are not giving
us the resources. My mom
used the same textbook that I
use today. They are out of
date.”

With the lack of supplies,
teachers are paying for
supplies out of their pockets
to fund their classroom and
make sure that their child are
receiving the resources that
are needed. With less staff
members in a school,
teachers and principals are
expected to step up to insure
that students are safe while in
their care. Classes are being
disrupted because of the
overcrowdedness and split
classes. Teachers  have
difficulty concentrating on
their class because of the
other burdens that are
weighing down on their
shoulders.
Chris Lehmann, principal and
founder of Science
Leadership Academy, said,
“We need to mobilize politics
for the fair funding state
formula, simply because there
is not enough money.”

According to Gym, “Charter
schools have the attention of
politicians and a select group of
a particular type of investors.”

No matter how often students
voice their story and community
members take action, at the end
of the day, students still march
and protest about funding
education being a first priority.
Students know that their voices
are still not heard and there are
so many questions that are still
left unanswered.
With the ongoing cuts and the
lack of teachers/counselors in
each schools, students are
struggling to fill out their college
applications and get the help
they need. Can the SDP fix the
damage that it has caused? Or
will students continue on like
this, struggling to claim their
education?
TEENS & NUTRITION
SCIENCE LEADERSHIP ACADEMY/ PHILADELPHIA 2014

How many times a week do you
eat breakfast in the morning?
5 days?
3 days?
Never?
Many teenagers would answer not
very often. It always seems there are
better things to do like getting some
extra sleep or doing some homework
you forgot to do the night before.
Or, if you are like 16 year old
Marlene you’d rather meditate than
eat breakfast. The problem with not
eating breakfast is that you deprive
your body of the energy and nutrition
it needs after hours worth of rest.
Although it is important for all
people to eat breakfast it is
particularly important for teenagers
because our bodies are still growing
and our brain is still developing.

Breakfast is also important when it comes to having a healthy BMI or
Body Mass Index. BMI test are used to identify possible weight problems
in people by taking their weight, age and height. When you don't eat
breakfast for long periods of time two really bad things happen. One,
your body panics, it begins to store more fat because it is not user when
will be the next time you eat, this can cause obesity. Secondly, most
breakfast skippers will eat obsessive amounts of food in the later hours to
make up for the breakfast they did not receive, this also causes more
weight gain. In order to live a happy and healthy life you must first have
a healthy diet. There are many really simple, healthy and delicious things
you can eat for breakfast that won't take much of your time.

FASHION
Everybody’s A Piece of Art
As you walk down the brightly
colored hallways of Science
Leadership Academy, or
whatever school you attend,
what catches your attention? Is it
the smiles of the students? Is it
the way they walk, or the way
they talk? No. People see J Crew
cardigans layered on top of loose
silk Express camisoles, or Venice
Beach Kobe 8’s that students
may or may not have on their
feet. Fashion has become a
major puzzle piece of the life of
teens in todays society. SLA
senior Kristi says, “Everybody’s a
piece of art,” and I agree.
“I love Kim Kardashian and I love
the way she dresses. I always
find myself designing things
similar to what Kim wears; she
inspires my work a lot,” says
local designer Butter Obama.

Posh blazers is inspired by
Victoria Beckham. The fearless
and edgy outfits of  Lady Gaga.
Beyoncé’s fierce and casual

Jones adds, “I can't wear booty
shorts and a tank top in January,
although I don't wear things like
that any way,” but students like
Enthony Chhin don’t let the

outfits. When it comes to fashion,
most teens turn to celebrities for

weather pick out fashion for
them. He says, “Before I start

inspiration.
From urban street, to preppy, or
trash glamour, everyone has
their own individual style
(celebrity-inspired or not) that
makes them feel unique.
Student Bryanna Jones says,
“Style is whatever you make it,”
and many people dress
depending on the way their mood
is or how they’re feeling.“The
way I determine what I want to
wear really depends on the
weather,” says Haneef Nelson.

deciding what I want to wear, I
daydream about it during school:
what color scheme, what
textures would look right paired
together. I’ll worry about the
weather later. It’s more of an
internal feeling, not how my skin
is feeling, you get me?” It’s not
about what you decide to wear,
but how you wear it, as long as it
makes you feel comfortable.

  • 2. The Video Game Industry Through a Teenager’s Eyes By:Lloyd Williams, Michael Nicolella and Pierce Meir ! Many people only see video games as something to do while they sit on a bus, or in a doctor’s office, but in reality it is a several billion dollar industry. More than 183 million people play at least an hour of video games every day. Considering how many people are affected by them, we have to ask about some of the big problems in the industry. That’s why we sent Science Leadership Academy’s own Pierce Meier, Michael Nicolella, and Lloyd Williams to find out the truth about some of the big issues. Gamer Stereotypes Debunked: The Truth Behind the Controller What comes to your mind when you think about  a gamer. For most people, it’s a teenage boy, sitting alone, in his bedroom, or a basement, yelling obscenities into a headset, drinking Mountain Dew and eating Doritos. This is the stereotypical gamer, but many would argue that this image is offensive and outdated. This raises the question, who is really playing games. ! Today the average age of a gamer is 34, 67% of video households have someone who plays video games, 45% of gamers are  females, and most gamers have been playing video games for 12 years. In 2009  the gaming industries gross revenue was 10.5 billion dollars. This raises the question in such a large industry, how could there be such gross misconceptions? The simple answer is that the people who play games changed with time, but public perception didn’t change with it. ! Back when video games were first becoming popular, they were played almost exclusively by teenage boys. As these kids grew up, there passion for gaming stayed with them. This meant that as time went on, the average age of a gamer rose. This also had a serious affect on the kinds of games being made. 6 out of 10 of the best selling games in 2013, were rated mature by the ESRB. As gamers matured, they demanded more mature games, which caused a change in the industry standard. This still begs the question, why has there been such a sudden influx of female gamers, and people playing games for the first time, after the age of 30. A big part of it is thanks to the Nintendo Wii. With more than 100 million systems sold, the wii is the 5th best selling gaming console. It was also the first major console marketed towards “casual gamers.” The Wii’s motion controls made gaming intuitive, and accessible for everyone, removing much of the stigma involved with being a gamer. Female gamers are quickly growing in numbers. There are more female gamers today than at any other point in the history of the industry. This is attributed largely to an influx in strong female characters appearing in video games. It is also a side effect of the quickly growing feminist movement. A girl is no longer considered undesirable based solely on the fact that they play video games, so they are more inclined to play. The stigma of playing video games is also weakened as a result of more female gamers playing, leading to a sort of spiral where the more females that play games, the more that will want to play games. 2
  • 3. ! Despite these facts, “casual gamers” are often ridiculed in the gaming community. People group themselves into categories like “hardcore gamer”, or “real gamer” to differentiate from those who play the wii, or mobile games. I had a chance to talk to PopCap’s co-founder, John Vechey about what he thought a real gamer was. Our meeting was brief, but he did have this to say “I don’t think there is such a thing as a real gamer. You either play games, and you're a gamer, or you don’t and you’re not. There’s really no two ways about it. I consider myself a game developer, not a casual developer, or a hardcore developer, just a game developer.” He went on to say that it wasn’t about the games that you play but how much you enjoy games. ! In the end we can all agree that gaming is no longer something that you need to hide or be ashamed of. It’s gone from being a barely recognized medium, to one of the biggest industries in the world, and today everyone plays. Lack of Originality In The Game Industry: A Teenager’s Perspective What was the last original game that you played? Think of the games you have played in 2013. Chances are it is probably the most recent sequel to Call of Duty, or one of the sports games that comes out every year. I see this as a problem in my eyes. “Why?” you might be asking. Because it is a problem when there is no originality in video games, or when it just seems like a copied and pasted game. This wouldn’t be a problem but thing is, people keep supporting it. I think that this tells the game developers that there is no reason to improve or add to the newer games, because they are making hundreds of millions of dollars annually. I had a great opportunity to talk to a few SLA gamers about their opinion of this topic. I asked Matt of SLA, “Do you think that there is a lack of originality in the video game industry?” He said: “Yes and I believe its because of consumers. When  Call of Duty comes out, millions of people buy it each year and they make tons of money. It seems like when developers see the success of these games, they seem to think that it’s okay to keep releasing the same thing each year.” This makes me think of the massive amounts of people who are buying these games that are released annually. People keep buying it, so it will keep being made. I also asked Richard of SLA the same question and he said: “Over the years, yes, I do think so because they're making so many sequels now. So yes, I have noticed that there is a lack of original video games today.” I think this shows that at least some people are tired of the generic first person shooter and if you think about it, it actually hurts the industry because It could discourage people from getting games because they are not interested in certain genres that are popularized . Some of the main games in the game industry are failing to create new and exciting titles right now. People need to notice that this can be quite bad if things like annual games become more frequent. And to be fair, Call of Duty is fun to play every once in a while, it has just been a genre that is overused in my opinion. 3
  • 4. Procrastination By: Amani Bey It is 3 AM, the house is silent......almost.  There is the frantic patterning of your fingers on the keys. As you type your report on the importance of the Civil War, or an analysis of one of those works by Shakespeare, you vow to never ever procrastinate again. ! Two weeks later, you’re up again racing against the clock to submit an assignment. Where did all the time go? Did the arms grow legs and run away? And then you remember, how that video of a cat surfing or that one scroll down your timeline took hours. “I’ll do it in an hour”, melted into “I’ll do it tomorrow” and now you’re up at 3 AM, eyes bloodshot, sunken. ! You don’t have a problem. All your friends do it. The next day, you guys (gals.. whatever is socially polite) share your battle stories: who stayed up longer, how many pages you managed to do in the least amount of time, who got a good grade on something that they did in an hour. ! Most people think procrastination is because we’re lazy or adrenaline junkies.  They don’t know how sneaky it can be; how we can be determined to sit down and produce work, but it calls to us, it pulls us in. 5.There’s a gap between intention and action 6.Removal from comfort zone makes one retreat High school students, like ourselves, are constantly the victims of this “put-it-off-syndrome” and older people dismiss it as lazy, or ADHD. When asked, a class of 22 11thgraders said they’d rather watch tv than do homework, minus the one to the contrary (ah, smells like teen spirit). So the Procrastination plagues 20% of question is, how does one make Americans, but it seems like themselves do something they don't want to. Everyday we are we’re all distracted 100% of the given ultimatums, pass or fail, do time, right? It would be safe to this, so that. So how do we as say teens make up a good 15%. self-respecting people make I’m a chronic sufferer. Do you ourselves do more stuff we don’t know how many hours of want to do? Do we do as wedo Youtube, crafting the perfect and then do the work we need to playlist—see another article in the do? (Just making sure, you’re still magazine about this—, and with me, say that 5 times fast) tweets went into the production of this article? Experts have millions of reasons as to why people procrastinate so much, here are the top six I found: 1. Inability to focus 2. Inability to focus for fear of failure or success 3. Inability to think about thinking 4. Boredom 4
  • 5. Here are 5 Common Tips I found for stopping procrastination and commentary on where they usually fall short: 1. Goal setting- Setting smaller goals inside a large project always seems to be the answer when handling a task. It’s the smart and responsible thing to do, but if you’re like me, the chronic procrastinator, you spend more time assigning and reassigning goals and deadlines than actually completing the task (you use this method against yourself and your work becomes constant revisal of your plan to actually do something) 2. Spacing out work - This falls into the first suggestion. Imagine: working on a paper, and assigning yourself a section on certain days. Does it always work? Do you find yourself jumping around and doing miscellaneous bits and pieces of paragraphs? Or do you convince yourself of going on research binges or planning more? You exhaust your production capital for the day and pat yourself on the back for doing more than what was asked — having not finished what needed to be done. 3. More sleep- I have nothing bad to say about sleep, it is wonderful, and can do no wrong. It lowers stress and feels great. There are moments when sleep is not the most useful thing and it is chosen by our bodies, willfully or not. 4. Concentration- There are apps to block certain websites on your computer, there’s ‘Do Not Disturb’ on your phone, but somehow, you feel an imaginary buzz —people are calling it textaphrenia —, or you check for just a second and get pulled in. Rewards- Rewards are hard sometimes, you have to really find something that you want, that you wouldn't normally do Try Writtenkitten.net , it’s a website that gives you a new picture of a kitten every time you type 100 words. 5
  • 6. There are “experts” have many different methods for battling procrastination, spacing work out, setting goals, assigning breaks etc. But we, as people have to change our outlook on tasks. Every assignment or task has to be seen as one  stepping stone closer to the future you want. ! Imagine your future as whatever you want to be and constantly envision each task as a way to get there. This may seem like an easy feat, but this is a constant reassignment of how you feel. ! “You have to play the game in order to get the winnings”. Do you think the college admissions are unfair? Do you think homework doesn’t help? You have to be the change you want to see in the world, you have to be accredited enough to have tried the way society thinks is right, so you can tell them how wrong they are. ! After reading this article, you probably feel on top of the world and have made the vow to never procrastinate again, but this will take time and constant practice. This method, like all methods is not panacea (a good SAT word, look it up), but give it a try. With that, I sign off, wishing you the best of luck! ....................Mani 6
  • 7. Miley Cyrus’s New Album BY: JASMINE NIEVES Some people think “Bangerz” is an inappropriate album made by Miley Cyrus. She was such a good girl before and now she changed. She changed because she wanted people to stop thinking of her as Hannah Montana but as Miley Cyrus the person. She also made this album to get back with her ex-fiancé, Liam Hemsworth. Many believe he was the reason for her acting crazily at the VMA’s, EMA’s and ever since Hannah Montana finished. Many people use to like the old Miley and some still do. They want the old Miley back and also some like the way she is. Lots of people were shocked to see her like the way she is now and the way she was acting. Also, lots of people thought this was to show that she was gaining her independence. She wants to be the biggest pop star and take over the world with her music. She still has a beautiful voice but needs to change a little. We can’t all deal with the crazy Miley. WE WANT THE OLD MILEY BACK!!! By the way, how she expressed her feelings was crazy and all out of whack because all she wanted was the sex from guys, show some skin and be known as a crazy baby. Many people thought she can be the next Britney Spears by the way she was acting. She was acting inappropriately in front of her fans and many people especially other stars, were shocked to see her the way she was acting. Again I say, WE WANT THE OLD MILEY BACK!!! She will either continue to act the way she is or change. It is all her choices, not ours. We are not her, she is. What some people thought of the new Miley was that she was crazy or people could just follow in her footsteps and act just like her. That’s not important in life. Being you is what's most important and nothing else. That should be a lesson learned for people to know about. 7
  • 8. Becoming A Citizen in The United States By Chaveliz Nieves An identity in the United States is something everyone wants. It is something that is fought for daily. And that should not influence if we get accepted into colleges with or without scholarships. Why should being an immigrant in the United States affect students decision of applying to college? “The Dream Act is bipartisan legislation that addresses the tragedy of young people who grew up in the United States and have graduated from our high schools, but whose future is circumscribed by our current immigration laws. Under current law, these young people generally derive their immigration status solely from their parents, and if their parents are undocumented or in immigration limbo, most have no mechanism to obtain legal residency, even if they have lived most of their lives in the U.S. The DREAM Act would provide such a mechanism for those who are able to meet certain conditions”. This means that if a child was brought to the U.S at a young age and lived here their entire life, but were born in another country and came here “illegally” then they will not be able to go to college. This act will help many of the students trying to get into college but can’t since they are immigrant. “I always have to validate myself because I am African American. People expect me to be a certain way that I am not. Therefore, I have to work more than others”. Amani Bey 17 from Science Leadership Academy, stated that “even when being a citizen in the United States, I have to prove myself many times because of who I am.” Students know that there will be constant competition for students who will try to get into college with a full ride scholarship can be intimidating. Some people are threatened that the people who immigrated to the u.s from a foreign country can get a full ride scholarship if the dream act is passed. Many arguments are made about this legislation. One of them is that the “citizens pay taxes and the immigrants don’t.” But that is not true. Many “immigrants” in this country do pay taxes and although it is not the same amount, it comes out of some of their check. According to a source who does not want to reveal her identity states that “this is a country for all. We should be accepted and not treated like slaves. They have us working in the fields for hours, yet we get paid close to nothing.” And the U.S forgets to recognize this. These are people and they have feelings and a family to care for. Thats why they come to an entire different country. To feed their family but they are looked as aliens to us. The dream act should be the way to tie the shoelaces to this country and make it run again. If we are in such a debt, we may be able to find the solution in one of the minds of a child who is potentially trying to get into college and is trying to set a foundation for his future. But if the u.s as a country is not allowing that, then we will not be able to fix our problems. What I truly don’t understand is if this country was basically founded off of immigrants from all around the world except the natives who already lived here, why are we so quick to judge when all of our ancestors had to leave something they really loved and valued to be able to set a new foundation for this new country they began to call home? 8

  • 12. The Choices We Face By: Bailey Britton & Jeremiah Cunningham How old were you when you lost your virginity? You may not believe it but many girls are losing their virginities as young as 11. Most of these girls’ sexual partners are at least 5 years older than them, and about 40% of the boys that are impregnating teen girls are older than 20. "Ignoring the age of the partners, the earlier a girl was when she first had intercourse, the greater her risk of suicide attempts, alcohol use, drug abuse, truancy and pregnancy," Leitenberg says. About 1 million teenage girls in the U.S. get pregnant each year. 50 percent of girls are losing their virginity by the time they go into their sophomore year of high school and the earlier you have sex the more likely you are to get pregnant. When teenage girls get pregnant in high school it is hard for them to watch their child and focus on schoolwork so only ⅓ of teen mothers complete high school. In 2011 over 300,000 children were born to females between the ages of 15 and 19. The government spends about $40 billion order to help these teenage parents with the hardships of juggling children and school. If you are sexually active and do not use birth control or a condom you are 85% more likely to get pregnant and the children of teen mothers are more likely to be born premature. 12

  • 14. Good Vibes Only There are plenty places in Philly to skate and chill with your friends in your free time. The city is a great place to discover places to go if you’re feeling adventurous, bored, or just want to have some fun and get out of the house. Whether you travel by board or public transportation, there are so many places in Philly to just kick it for leisure time. ✌ South Street ! South street consists of places to shop and eat. The farther away you get from 2nd street there are stores galore and the closer you get to 2nd street the closer you get to some awesome food place. You have to be a little older to go certain places and get the full effect of South street but you’ll have a great time none the less. There’s a skate shop called Nocturnal between 5th and south and 6th and south. South Street is surrounded by homes but living near South street isn’t cheap. There’s even condos near 12th and South Street. None the less you discover something new every time you visit South street. Paine’s Park ! Paine’s is a skate park not too far off from the art museum. Its a great environment and hosted go skate day in Philly this past 2013 which was amazing. There were two performances and a couple skate contests. Its less crowded in the winter but pretty much packed in the summer. If you're looking for a great place to skate Paines is the place. You can even just take some friends to Paines and have a great time and don’t even have to skate. Either way you can have a great time and skate on. 14
  • 15. Love Park ! Love park is a spot right in the middle of Center City. Its a great place and tourist attraction but people have been skating at love park for a while now. Although skating at Love isn’t really allowed anymore security usually will kick you out but its nice to just chill by the park’s fountain in the summer. Around Christmas time they put a Christmas tree in the center of the empty fountain  and put up Christmas village. Its a great place all year round with a great view of all of the city. Love park is a one of the biggest tourist attractions in Philly where people come and take pictures. CHEEEEEESE ^_^ Christmas Village Go Skate Day! By: Marteena Johnson 15
  • 16. By: Briana Bailey The Conversation Ever start a conversation that felt never ending? Or awkwardly tried to end a deep discussion? “The Art Conversation” was one of those moments in life. Art is passion. It comes from the tenderness of the mind and soul. Roots from blood dripping painful experiences to the tears of joy in life... it’s honest... pure. Just like a ‘heart to heart’ conversation that seems everlasting. This conversation was an opportunity to bring together the artsy minds of 11 young local artists look at that you don’t do? What does the word art mean to you? Who and what are you inspirations? What advice would you give to other people? All of these artist (including myself) love to share their creations with others who are willing to look and listen. After reading the artists profiles, there is a list of places where many performances happen. A list of places to go to and hear inspiration. Places where you can meet many youth (like the ones your about to read about) and non-youth. Sweetness is about to invade your tastebuds as you learn about these flaming artist. of Philadelphia. Rashuan Williams, “DJ Reezy”. Cameron Beckham, BBoy “Icaris.” Break dancer. Shania Morris. Female MC. Ronald Harper, “Freestyle.” A rapper. Adam Feliciano “DJ Phazze.” Bailey Britton. A dancer. Shaneka Briggs. A poet. Alex harris, “kno Picks.” A rapper Simone, “Avery.” The singer and instrumentalist for the band “Casual Encounters”. Benjamin McCool. The drummer for “Casual Encounters.” Julian Harris. The guitarist. 11 different ways of thinking, meeting up from different parts of the city, to discuss 5 different key questions to ask an 1 artist. What types of art do you like to read or 16
  • 17. Art. “Its a Story... Its a journey... A learning experience... A concept of life...” -Shania Morris “I wish I could draw or paint pictures” says 17 year old female MC Shania. Poetry was the beginning of the journey of becoming a rapper. Like most people life experiences is what helps create her “Hottest bars.” Shania enjoys free styling and cyphers. Even when free styling she only speaks the truth. “no matter the art it should always have a honest message behind it” Adam Feliciano “DJ Phazze” “Love what you do. Everyone has a gift, some are fortunate to discover it. Take advantage of it!” DJ’ing is his 17 year old Adams passion. It keeps his sanity and gives him motivation to succeed. Adams inspiration comes from radio DJ’s. “I have to consider what type of crowd I am playing for.” Seeing people happy from the music he plays keeps the inspiration rolling. Cameron Beckham “BBoy Icaris” 19 year old Cameron, also known as BBoy Icaris says “I love to share my art on stage.” He performs the art of Break dance. Its expressed through the human body. To him breaking means anger, happiness and excitement. Every emotion or thought is told through a story of body movement. “Music inspires the speed and the movement” 1 17
  • 18. ART. “Taking a concept and putting your own style into it ...Its an ambiguous term” -Alex Harris “Kno Picks” “Clark park (in West Philly) is my favorite place to to write. It expresses the diversity of my neighborhood.” Alex believes that his music challenges the transition between having fun with words and pursuing a career in lyricism and performance. Bailey Britton I asked Bailey (a 16 year old dancer) “If you could give one last piece of advice to any artist what would it be..” She replied by saying “stay committed to what you love. Dance to me means expressing the way your feel through body movement. Its what I LOVE!” Reading poetry is one of her secrete things to enjoy doing. Its secrete because she wishes she could write poetry and appreciates those who do. Ronald Harper “Freestyle” “I have a great stick figure drawling though” says 17 years young rapper “Freestyle” jokingly as he wished he could draw. Freestyle gets his inspirations from other artist “I feel like Im home when I’m with them” he says. He enjoys going to art gallery’s and believes that art is created at anytime of the day Finding serenity and inner peace is the reason this 19 year old poet began to write. Art means “Self-pride, power, and happiness. Create honest work, be persistent and create things that have purpose. Once my art is spoken into existence I get a sense of relief.” Shaneka Briggs 1 18
  • 19. “My art comes from ALL people, both the loving and those filled with hatred” -Rashaun Williams “Casual Encounters” “We are a group of Philly based musicians who have come together to put a twist on music. We fuse funk, indie, soul, jazz and whatever else together to create something completely different. While being only a few months old we have a lot ahead and want whoever to take those steps with us.” -Simone “Avery” Julian Harris Julian is the guitarist for the band “The Casual Encounters.” He started playing the guitar and over the years has become very passionate about it. This guitarist longs for the day that he can call himself a “Photographer.” “The world means music.” In other words, experiences, test and trails is what makes music. Simone “Avery” I think the dream to be a drawer has won. Like a few other artist above Simone (stage name Avery) wishes she could draw. She is the lead signer and song writer for “The Causal Encounters.” “Anyone can be an artist she says, “Just do it because that would be a waste of talent and passion if you didn’t.” This drummer doesn’t write the lyrics to the songs because he wishes to be a creative writer. He surely does make your toe tap, head nob and body move with the sounds of drumming. One of his inspiring people in life is Travis Orbin (a drummer he follows). In Ben’s spare time he likes to read writings of philosophers. “Dear artist practice, purse clear goal and ask for help” Benjamin McCool 1 19

  • 21. THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS STRESS January 2014 Have you fallen asleep in class? Been overeating? Have you been Irritable, achy, or suffering from headaches? If you answered, “yes” to any of the questions above, you may be suffering from a form of stress. Stress is a very real aspect of life in today’s society. More often than not, stress touches and affects the lives of teenagers throughout the country. It’s something that can sometimes be very difficult to control and cope with. If stress goes incorrectly treated or ignored, it may lead to negative changes in physical and mental health, such as anxiety, mood swings, periods of depression, substance abuse and more. Changes in physical health include upset stomach, trouble sleeping, muscle tension and chest pain, headaches and fatigue. By:Melanie Harrington & Wendy Tepoz
  • 22. THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS STRESS! Brooke Maxam, a senior attending Mattawan High School in Michigan, faces the pressures of being a community leader for various sports and clubs, keeping her grades up, and maintaining relationships with family and friends. Maxam admitted, “I am not good when it comes to how to deal with stress so, in all honesty, I self-harm.” ! School, meeting deadlines, family and friends, sudden changes in a routine or way of life, taking on more than you can handle, changes in yourself and in your family, detrimental experiences. These are just some things that normally trigger stress in a teenager’s daily life, including the ones that Maxam deals with. It doesn’t help when a parent is ignorant to their child’s stress triggers and troubles. There can be different things that prevent a parent from knowing and understanding their child’s problems. For example, lack of communication, seeing what they want to see, not understanding what their child deals with from day-today, etc. Not all parents have close relationships with their children. However, while a lot of teenagers keep their stress a secret from their families, there are some who have more of an open relationship with their parents. ! Even though it is evident that stress is caused by various things, there is one that recurs in every teen’s life. School. Healthy eating, sleeping and exercising habits/routines are a great way to ward off the physical effects of stress. Brooke Maxam admits that exercising helps keep her mind away from the negative coping skill that she picked up. Breathing exercises and things like yoga and meditation help clear the mind. Richard Yoeun, a junior at Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, PA, advises other students to, “...take it easy, go with flow, and meditate.” Your stress and built up emotions can be used in constructive ways to create beautiful masterpieces. Use your negative energy to create, not destroy. Engage in an art form such as painting, drawing, music, dancing and writing. ! Margaret Hohenstein, another junior at Science Leadership Academy, said, “I deal with stress by doing things that I have a large amount of talent for.”
  • 23. THE BEST WAY TO ADDRESS STRESS! Even though a lot of the above advice can be given to you by any therapist or counselor, they are still excellent and effective ways of coping with stress levels. However, let’s take a look at some ways different high schoolers around Philadelphia, PA cope with their stress. ! Elyse Morales, junior at the Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, informs, “Some of the ways I deal with stress are by drinking tea, making lists, rewarding myself when I get stuff done, and napping.” said Danny Godwin, a junior at the Academy of Palumbo. “I had to work harder,” said Raul Antonio Serrano, a freshman at Murrell Dobbins in Philadelphia, PA. Victoria Jennings told us, “Some ways that I deal with the stress is by reading books or listening to music.” “One way I deal with stress is by playing and learning songs on piano and violin. I've taken up crocheting as well,” ! Everyone deals with stress at one point in their lives so don’t feel alone. Next time you feel like life is dragging you down, grab a friend, talk about it and don’t forget to smile. Everything will be okay in the end and if it’s not okay, then it’s not the end.

  • 28. Glory Daze by Alex Held and Marlyn Mooney How good are you in bed? What was the longest you’ve ever gone for? Is it your favorite thing to do? ! By now, you’ve probably realized that we’re talking about sleeping. Sleeping, as we all know, is an essential part of life. Without it, you may find yourself feeling like you’re physically unable to get out of bed in the morning. Even one hour less sleep than recommended can cause a serious drop off in attention, mood, and motor functions. Teenagers at SLA have experienced these things, and mostly do so, every day. “So why?,” you ask. “It’s only one hour less of sleep, it can’t make that much difference.” Well the answer is not as simple as you may think. Yes, an hour less or an hour more of sleep every night can determine how productive you are daily; however, that is not the only reason. Eating before bed can also cause complications with your sleep as well as your overall health. Eating right before you go to sleep can worse insomnia, the inability to fall or stay asleep. That’s just the beginning. More and more reports are being released that show the effects of lack of sleep, including increased anxiety, depression, bad eating habits, statistically worsening test scores by students, and mood disorders. ! All of us argue that we stay up late to finish homework, study, or continue to finish our project, blaming school for our lack of sleep. Sleep research professors actually state that there is physically not enough hours in the day for students to devote the appropriate amount of time to all of these commitments, especially in relation to school. And, we can’t ignore arguably the most vital factor in the development of a teenager: sleep. It is true the older you get the less sleep you need, meaning teenagers should average about a good 8-9 hours of sleep a night. ! During some interviews SLA students James Prell and Melanie Harrington stated they get about “7-8” hours of sleep a night, however SLA students Teige Dougherty and Ryan Shaw stated they get about “2-3 hours of sleep”, if they’re lucky. Surprisingly only one student of multiple interviews reported feeling tired at school. Most students report waking up in the crucial, illegal hours between 4-6 am. 28
  • 29. A new study has found that five times as many high school and college students are dealing with anxiety and other mental health issues than youth of the same age who were studied in the Great Depression era. It is a proven fact that the average mental stability of a teenager in 2013, is one of a psychopath in 1960. One of these reasons is stress induced sleep, with more fatigue comes anxiety. Anxiety disorders affect one in eight children. Teenagers who have anxiety disorders are at higher risk to perform poorly in school, miss out on important social experiences, and engage in substance abuse. Anxiety disorders also often co-occur with other disorders such as depression, eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The majority of teens with a stress-induced sleep problem experience it at least once per week, and more than half experience it at least several times a week. Know how you’re always tired after school? Well that’s because mental stimulation is one of the most exhausting things for the human body. When your brain is hard at work, it has to expend a great deal of energy to solve computational problems that you are given at school. An example of this that is both tiring and constructive as well as something that is fun would be reading. Yes! Reading is a great way to spend you’re free time because if you’re reading something you’re interested in, you not only enjoy it, you learn from it and makes you tired so you aren’t restless or have bloodshot eyes from playing video games for 4 hours.Taking our fellow classmates into consideration we decided to do a test (on ourselves of course) to find some efficient ways to fall asleep faster and earlier. Some methods are meditating, drinking tea, taking sleeping pills, making the room colder, exercising at least 5 hours before, counting sheep, or watching television or movies. Keep in mind that these vary between persons so please do not get angry if these don’t work. First, you can try counting sheep. Typical, hackneyed, stupid? Wrong. It has been proving that counting sheep (an activity as boring as school) relaxes  your mind and helps you fall asleep faster. Usually teenagers try to go to bed after hours of technology, at least we do, and counting sheep is clearing your mind. It worked for marlyn. 1 marlyn 0 alex. Next, hot tea. Drinking tea. 0 for Marlyn 0 for Alex. We just busted a myth, call us myth busters. It feels good to drink warm liquids, and we think it relaxes us, so it does. But hey, give it a shot. No more “just 10 more minutes”. The next time you’re having trouble sleeping just remember you are not alone. Teenagers all over the world can’t sleep, even though it’s the one thing we want. (something to go with our game here). Remember when you’re on your computer on Facebook or watching Netflix, or playing xbox that you need to surrender and ruin your kill streak. We understand negotiating the limits of time spent on technology with a teenager is never easy but neither is waking up in the morning. 29
  • 30. Maintaining Healthy Relationships with Friends and Family by: Reginald Simmons In high school, you will come across many different problems that will test your patience and resolve. It can be one of the most difficult things in the world to think rationally about bad situations during the initial panic, but you’ll find that trying your best to keep a clear head will, in the long run, leave you a more peaceful and content human being. You have to know the skills that allow you step back, analyze and solve efficiently. The first thing you should do when you become involved in an emotionally charged situation is step back. Think about a few underlying factors. Things like, “Why are the people involved reacting the way they are?” and “What can I do right now to help the situation?” should come to mind. Again, these are hardly ever the first things that naturally come to mind during tense and heated situations, but no one said it would be easy. It takes a lot of willpower and maturity to to able to look at something from a new, more selfless perspective. One of the best courses of action to take when trying to solve a problem with your peers (or friend outside of school, family member, etc.) is understanding. Of course, this is also one of the most trying things to do, but with understanding comes acceptance, and with acceptance comes peace. That’s what the main aspiration should be: peace. Sometimes, you’ll find that in order to establish peace between you and someone else, you have to sacrifice something. Sometimes, you will have to compromise. In most cases, the person, or people, you’re in an argument or altercation with are those least likely for you to see as someone you’d like to have a peaceful relationship with, but that’s where the perspective comes in. You have to realize what’s worth what. Though it isn’t easy, the resolving of issues, whether school-related, home-related or otherwise, leads to a decrease in stress levels. Stress is not 30
  • 31. ! only an emotional burden, but a physical one as well. High stress levels lead to things like sleepdeprivation, appetite loss and mild paranoia. Not only are these very unhealthy byproducts, they’re also unpleasant. And what’s worse, sometimes a person under high stress has no idea how they’re being affected by it. As teenagers, we are even more prone to these side-effects, and sometimes even less aware. Make it a point to every once in a while take a few minutes aside to really think about how you’re feeling. Is there anything bothering you or affecting your mood? If so, try to think through it before you add it to your list of problems (if you’re like me, there’s always some list of problems that you have at any given moment). There may be a very simple fix to it that becomes clear after a little meditation. Besides generally being able to maturely and peacefully solve spats with peers, friends, relatives or anyone, having the skills to collaborate with others and overcome obstacles will lead to an easier time working in groups on school projects, and in adult life, in any case where working with other people on a task is a requirement. In order to understand how to deal with powerful emotions, both positive and negative, in a healthy way, an understanding of the source of those emotions is paramount. Knowing the stem of a problem is key in figuring out how to solve it. In a sense, it’s like mathematics. In order to solve a system of equations, the first step is finding the values of however many  variables there are. Then, checking to make sure the numbers run is the final and most important step. In school, there are many different sources for stress. Things like projects, homework, trouble with friends or difficulty in class can seem like dire situations. This is inevitable and natural. But certain steps need to be taken to insure the survival of your sanity. Letting problems pile will result in a very unpleasant emotional experience overall. 31

Therefore, we shall tip our hats and salute our times with this honorable mention. No longer will we be dragged down by 90’s babies, and their fun times, but brought up by “our” welcoming, grand appearance, of the 21st century. We flipped through tv stations click-by-click with our remotes to some of the hottest shows. From Spongebob Squarepants to the Fresh Prince, our laughs immersed the globe. We ran to our tv’s just to watch The Simpsons at 6:00, because we didn’t have the pause or record button. It was if “you missed it, you missed it”. The only way something was recorded or paused was on V.C.R. Every movie was put on V.C.R, and if you didn’t have one, going to the movies was everything to you. Characters were constantly singing, smiling, and twirling around in their lands; and you did the same thing right along with them. You walked around your house constantly singing everywhere you went, because Disney Movies movies showed that it was okay to sing for every problem you faced. Now, all your parents and guardians consistently tell you to do is “Shut Up” or “Close the door”, but you don’t care because Timon and Pumba told you “no worries” with “Hakuna Matata”. It was Timon and Pumba who taught you slang first. Not,Drake,Lil Wayne,or someones grandma down the street. Everything you did as a child could always be fixed by laughing, dusting off your hands, and just saying “Hakuna Matata, means no worries.” That’s all our childhood was when you were young, just laughing, bouncing, and playing around.

You didn’t mind the dirt on your skirt, and the grass stain on your shirt, because it meant you could go home and take a 1-foot bubble bath. You believed you were Superman or Wonder Woman with the towel you wrapped around yourself. When you realized you couldn't fly and you got the scrape on your knee to prove it. Your mom whipped out Alcohol, Neosporin, and a character band-aid,and kissed it to make it better. You would sleep through the night, and not be awoken by a bell. Your mom came in your room, nudged you, and said “Rise and Shine”. You walked in the bathroom and brushed your teeth with “Tooth Tunes”. You went back to your room, and your mom helped you put on your jumper or helped fit your foot in your Air force ones. You got in your cars and had to physically roll down your window to feel the breeze on your face. In your “Toy Story” lunch box was a Lunchables Pizza version, a fruit roll up, a piece of fruit, and a Hi-C juice to fill you up.  Then, when you got to school, after your “Pops Cereal” breakfast, you pulled out your wooden pencil, and received your signed homework out of your “Lisa Franks or Pokemon Folder”. There was no Jansport, it was “Favorite Character” backpacks or “Rolling on Wheels” that started the day. However, when lunch time came, it sounded like a choir preaching their voices. • 38. Youth Fight for Adequate Education By:Amy Chen Students chant SOS! Save our School! SOS! Save our Schools! We want education, not incarceration! On December 16, 2013 at the School District of Philadelphia (SDP), students marched into 440 to claim their right to be educated. Knowing that the Superintendent of the School District, and the School Reform Commission (SRC) members would be there, students talked about 4 important topics. What is the role of teachers, how can students help reconstruct the district, why are students disengaged in school, and how can we improve communication between the district and the community? With the devastating cuts that Governor Corbett made since he entered office, Philadelphia’s schools lost 127 assistant principals, 676 teachers, 283 counselors, 1,202 noontime aides, Teachers, parents, and community activists united together as a whole and fought for good quality education for their child, their community, and their future generation. As a facilitator, I rotated from table to table with the question how can students help reconstruct the district? With a vast pool of different students from different backgrounds and experiences, I heard many voices that should be heard. I asked Helen Gym, a charter school founder, what she thinks charter schools offer that district schools may not. She told me that charter schools are “a way to move away from traditional public education into the Wild West of an uninformed, unregulated school choice.” Gym defines traditional public schools as “district-managed, unionized public schools.” “Charter schools are public schools but they are not One of the student who attended a managed or run by the School charter school, said, “Charter District. Charters therefore are schools focus on each not a system you manage, study student as an individual, not as a and regulate. They are tiny mini districts that make it difficult to whole because you cannot meet that kid’s needs if you focus on them regulate and understand,” she added. as a group and that’s what the district does. The SDP needs to 307 secretaries, 769 supportive focus on each service assistants, 89 teacher students as assistants, etc. With a total of 3,783 an individual.” employees laid off.
  • 39. When I asked the question, “What outcome do you hope for from the SDP, ” a student from Central said, “You can not expect a student to succeed if you are not giving us the resources. My mom used the same textbook that I use today. They are out of date.”   With the lack of supplies, teachers are paying for supplies out of their pockets to fund their classroom and make sure that their child are receiving the resources that are needed. With less staff members in a school, teachers and principals are expected to step up to insure that students are safe while in their care. Classes are being disrupted because of the overcrowdedness and split classes. Teachers  have difficulty concentrating on their class because of the other burdens that are weighing down on their shoulders. Chris Lehmann, principal and founder of Science Leadership Academy, said, “We need to mobilize politics for the fair funding state formula, simply because there is not enough money.” According to Gym, “Charter schools have the attention of politicians and a select group of a particular type of investors.” No matter how often students voice their story and community members take action, at the end of the day, students still march and protest about funding education being a first priority. Students know that their voices are still not heard and there are so many questions that are still left unanswered. With the ongoing cuts and the lack of teachers/counselors in each schools, students are struggling to fill out their college applications and get the help they need. Can the SDP fix the damage that it has caused? Or will students continue on like this, struggling to claim their education?

It always seems there are better things to do like getting some extra sleep or doing some homework you forgot to do the night before. Or, if you are like 16 year old Marlene you’d rather meditate than eat breakfast. The problem with not eating breakfast is that you deprive your body of the energy and nutrition it needs after hours worth of rest. Although it is important for all people to eat breakfast it is particularly important for teenagers because our bodies are still growing and our brain is still developing.
