This senior project document discusses a student's plans to focus their senior project on skills related to home renovation, an area they enjoy and hope to pursue as a business. It provides details on designing different rooms, including choices for flooring, cabinets, countertops, and color schemes. The student aims to apply these skills by completing carpentry work, drywalling, plumbing, and electrical work for a kitchen renovation as part of their senior project.
2. My senior graduation project will be based on a skill that I have decided to pick up on through life and hope to continue into my own business. This is related to my applications because I spend my free time fixing up areas of my house and doing side jobs. Thesis Statement
3. Personal Relevance This projects relates to me because it is what I have been working towards my whole high school career. Right at the start of my 8th grade year when we visited the tech school and I saw the possibilities in the construction trade I knew I wanted to be there. I wasn’t completely sure witch area of construction I wanted to be in. As I worked on the several projects they gave us and the side projects I have done on my free time I decided I enjoyed home renovation the most and that’s how I became upon this project because it is what I want to do with my life and I enjoy doing it.

56. Conclusion The main thing I learned from my project is color and material relations. I learned how certain materials can relate to each other and also what materials are a good choice for certain kinds of rooms. I also learned about how people think of there homes and why some materials are so popular.
Functional homes – homes that when you walk around you just feel like everything is ok its easy to move around in and the rooms kind of flow together.General inspiration – if you have something to relate the house to it makes it easier to design.Budget – know your budget is extreme importance. If you go over your spending budget that cuts into your profit.
Color Scheme - The color of the room is one of the first thing you notice walking into a room. But since I will not be the home owner it’s a good idea to go with some of the neutral colors that are more popular. Such as Creamy neutrals. A creamy neutral color is more of a light tan that is not to bright to the eye but also is not to dark to make the room look gloomy. The cream colors define the better aspects of the kitchen such as the cabinets and counter tops.
They were originally called bare bone cabinets because they used to be the simplest ugliest cabinet but now manufactures have found ways to make the stock cabinets look custom but the keep the name for the other reason that you can see the fame work that holds the cabinets together.ProsAvailable in one week usually and very cheapConsStock cabinets are limiting to size and areas to put them because the are already made before they are sent out.Companys will ussually not modified there original design if you request.Since they come in a standerd sizes there is sometime wasted space with fillers
There are to kinds of different custom cabinet making. One from a local custom woodworking shop and one from a custom manufacturer. The only thing that isnt a down fall from a custom manufacturer is that they will usually order the doors and other object from individual companies so that cabinets are not completely custom.ProsYou can match custom cabinets with any style and kitchen shape because they are completely designed in house and measured to fit perfectly so there is no wasted spaceThere are almost no limitations to custom cabinitry except for the manditory things such as support and structure.ConsCustom cabinets are usually very expensive unles you get a prittystanderd design. Either way it will be the mos expensive cabinet to get. Also custom cabinets take time and concentration to make perfect and will take atleast 3 months to be delivered.
framedWith frame cabinetry you can see all of the frame work used to hold the cabinet together.Sides are kept together by horizontal and vertical railsIt is easier to design larger framed cabinets because the frame work gives it overall more support and more area to connect hinges and drawers.FramelessIn framelss construction the side panels of the cabinets are thicker to create more stabilityThere is a lot more hardware envolved in frameless construction because there is no front frame to connect the doors or cabinets to.Although frameless cabinets will offer around 10% more storage spacing and since there are no frames in the front it is easier access. But it is also harder to replace theses parts and if not installed correctly can sag or become damaged easier.
A maple finish cabinet is a light straight grain texture that can adapt very well with modern home designs or traditional home designsMaple is one of the most popular choices of cabinetry wood because of its durability and capability to look good with almost any home design.
Cherry wood is extremely capable of mixing with other woods. It is a very smooth wood that flows very nicely. It is a rough looking wood because its color and defined grain marks that are very thick and close together
Oak has a much coarser natural texture that is a more natural color and looks more like an original nature. When oak gets covered with stain it will either make the grain more excentric or cover it up. If dark stain is used the grain becomes more definied an easily visible but the lighter the stain the less visible the grain becomesAlthough it is a coarser texture it is a softer wood which mean it is easier to mark it up and but dents in.
Pine grain is a long skinny continuous streak. It is a very elegant look.Yellow pine is more of a natural wood color but is also more durable then white pine.Pine is one of the softest woods so it is easier to damage and put dents in.
Alder is very un consistent in color, it can range any were from a pinkesh-brown to white. The grains are very small and close which means it will easily except stains and sometimes may be mistaken for a cherry or walnut wood.It is one of the most in demand wood for cabinetry once alder gets looked past its capability to grow weeds and is shaped into beautiful cabinetry
There are two main types of birch cabinets. White paper birch although is a common cabinetry type yellow birch is the most common cabinets used by stock cabinet makers and is the most common commercially used cabinets.
Hickory is one of the woods that is a family to Walnut.Hickory is the strongest heaviest American used woods. The straight and defined grain excepts light colored stains very well and really brings out the natural glow of the grain.
Granite – granite is one of the most popular counter top choices. it is a multi purpose counter. It is scratch resistant which means you can do some cutting on it without worrying about scratching it. Also if for some reason it does scratch a quick re-polish will fill and fix the scratches. It does not stain and only needs to be re-sealed once a year. Granite also does not crack with heat. Hot pans can be placed on it without worry of braking or cracking.Marble – marble is most known for it’s smooth texture. it is used in many pastry kitchens because rolling dough on it is easy. It is however not as durable as granite and needs to be re-sealed more often to prevent stains.Limestone – limestone is a better choice for a show home or a kitchen that is not used very much. It is much easier to stain and spills must be cleaned up immediately. If the kitchen is maybe in a home of a single person with out a family it is a good choice because it has the most naturally beautiful looks then the other materials.
Quartz is better known as the super man of countertop materials. It is nearly industructable.Pros-does not need to be re-sealed regularly. It it at all needs to be re-sealed at sometime it is probably because someone installed it wrong.-its pours are so small that the are almost un noticable when spilling. That is what keeps quartz so stain free.-the color that quartz comes in from the factory is so consistent that the color you pick out in the store will be the same or closest to the color the factory sends to you.-quartz is also known to rock hard almost as hard as a diamond which makes it scratch proof and dent proofCons-it can resist heat somewhat but if a hot pan is placed on it there is a great chance of cracking or heat stains.-built in sinks are almost impossible to find and if found will be a very expensive price.
Laminate is made of multiple layers of paper. The paper that is used for grocery bags is the same kind of paper used for countertops. The paper is covered with a plastic almost like its been laminated.Pros-because paper is so easy to alter to different shapes and colors it is impossible to not find the style or color needed for any kitchen-because of its laminate material on top it is extremely smooth and easy to clean.-instead of having a back edge of the counter that meets the counter these laminate counters come standard with a curved back that goes up the wall which keeps liquids and materials on the counter and also makes it an easier clean upCons-because of the layered material fixing chips and scratches is one of the most difficult things to do because all layers may be a little bit different and the color contrast between the counter and the piece that has been replaced.-this material is not heat resistant at all and will melt the countertop immediately upon contact of hot pans.-the counter is also not scratch resistant and it is necessary to use cutting boards.
ProsWhen cutting on wood it doesn’t dull knivesSince most cutting boards are made of wood it is possible to keep a section of the counter to use as a cutting boardIt is extremely easy to remove scratches from wood because all the layers of wood are the same and it can just be sanded or oiled downConsWood countertops need to be re oiled and re sealed annually. If not oiled or sealledanually and correct it makes it easier to get water damage and might worp or change colors
ProsIt is very easy to work concrete into any kind of counter shape and also be integrated into many kinds of sinksExtremely hard to scratch and can handle heat very wellAlmost imposible to brake with regular use. The strongest natural material availableConsIf not sealed properly it can stain with certain spills.Must be waxed at least every 3 months to protect the sealant and give it its clean look.Although it can take hot temperature it cant take a quick temperature change because if it changes quickly then there is a possibility of cracking
Ceramic tiles are made of of pressed clay that have a color glaze over top to give it its finish clean look.ProsIt is extremely heat resistant and there is no worry of cracking with temperature change. If the grout is installed correctly in between the tiles there is no worry of water getting under and lifting the tiles.Ceramic tile can be used to make multiple designs. It is almost unlimited to what you can do with ceramic tile.ConsTile will crack very easily if heavy loads are dropped on itThe tiles wont stain but the grout in between the tile will stain very easily.Tile is hard to clean so it isnt a good choice for people who are messy cookers or cook a lot.
Stainless steel countertops are most commonly found in restaurant kitchens because it can take anything that is done to it without worrying about damaging it majorly and for the little damages it gets it does not have to be visually satisfying because it is not seen often by customers.ProsIt is extremely heat resistance and will not be damaged by hot pots and pans. The heat needed to damage stainless steel is so great that you would have to hold a torch to it for several minutes just to damage itStainless steel is virtually stain proof. Other than burning it it will not stainIt is one of the smoothest materials used for countertopsAlmost all stainless steel countertops come with built in sinks. This is good because that makes it impossible for water to get in the crevices were sinks would normally lay on top of the counter
Lavastone is made from volcano rock that dries usually in a body of water. And then gets its color by a laminate that is put around it when its shaped.Pros
Glass is the most modern countertop used today. It is the nicest countertop made and can be formed and designed in any way imaginableProsGlass is stain proof. The closest thing to a stain that can can happen is smuges and that can be cleaned easilyIt has so much of a variety that it can be the last thing added to the kitchen. The is no need to incorporate it into the design of the countertops because it can be formed and designed anyway that is humanly possibleHeat and water do not affect glass what so ever so there is no worry about putting hot pans on it and it does not need to be re sealed or stained everConsGlass can chip and will chip if something heavy is dropped on it or if something very hard bumps into itIt will scratch with a knife cutting on it so it is necessary to use a cutting board or maybe even have one incorporated in the glass countertop
ProsPaper countertops is one of the newest strongest countertops around. It is just as strong as stone and doesn’t stain as easy as stone. It is also hard to dent because the paper absorbs any hard contact and forms back into shapePaper composite can come in many colors so it can match any kind of kitchen design.ConsIf for some reason the countertop would get damaged it is so hard to fix that it might just be worth replacing that section of the counter. Paper countertops are made of so many layers of paper it is hard to make it match exactlyIf the paper becomes unsealed and water gets into it the countertop will slowly change colors and even start to decompose
Make sure what ever carpet you pick it has some stain resistance and if possible dark enough that stains will be visible hard to see.ProsCarpet is a material that takes most of the sound of your step away it is also very comforting on the feet and may be a good choice for someone who enjoys cooking.Cons it is not very durable to wear and tear and doesn’t take the everyday spills very easily. it may be more off a chore to clean because everyday spills will not be as easy to clean liquids may cause some mildew especially in humid areas.
Ceramic tile is made from a clay material that has been pressed together by machine. The tile is then cover with a metallic oxide that give it its very nice smooth feeling.Pros Tile is a very easy material to work with on a design aspect. There are so many available types, sizes, and colors of tile so that it is a good resource to use as a backup and also so that there is less worry about matching it to the other aspects of the room the durability of tile is almost a necessity for a kitchen. Tile is very easy to clean because of the glaze over the tile. The glaze makes it almost impossible to stain the tile. Also tile is a good flooring because it is a replaceable material if there is cracking or staining. When you go to replace tile you can lift the one or two tiles that broke instead of replacing the entire floor so it matched.Cons Glazed tile without a texture present can be slick and can pose a safety hazard for children or elderly. unglazed tile must be treated with a sealants occasionally tile can be rough on the feet and may be a little uncomfortable for people who spend a lot of time in the kitchen.
The three main types of hardwood floor to choose from are oak, maple, and pine.ProsHardwood floors that come glazed with sealant from the factory maybe only have to be re coated ever five years or so and are also able to be cleaned with only a broom or vaccum. hardwood flooring is longer lasting than most materials and is very uplifting for the room.ConsIf liquid seeps in between the floor seems there is the possibility of the wood bending unnaturally or may creating a bubble under the hardwood. waxed hardwood floors need to be re coated annually and can be slippery which may not be good for a kitchen or bathroom when scratches appear on hardwood you may need to refinish the whole floor so that everything looks the same sunlight can and will fade the color of hardwood over time so placing rugs and furniture on hardwood and leaving it for awhile may create discoloration on the floor
Laminate floors relate to two other flooring choices. It has the design and look of a hardwood floor but it sticks on like vinyl in which you just lay it on and it sticks.ProsLiquids don’t effect the laminate like they would real hardwood flooring. there is no worry about staining or fading of the product. it is able to be cleaned with just a broom or mop and requires less maintenanceConsWhen the floor finally does start to fade it can not be refinished it must just be replaced Laminate will not chip easily and if it is placed correctly shouldn’t lift from the floor or tear more seems are visible with laminate and the floor will not be as smooth
Linoleum is confused with vinyl a lot of the time. But it is a completely different kind of material unlike vinyl linoleum is made out of completely organic and natural materials.ProsLinoleum is a very smooth elastic material. It is easy on the feet to stand on for long periods this is a hard material to dent and damage also greases and oils will not damage or stain itConsThis material does not come in many colors or patterns. The patterns are usual simple and not eye popping water that sits for a period of time can and will damage the floor
Vinyl is one of the most popular kinds of flooring for kitchens in America. It is one of the most reshape able materials. It can bounce back to its original shape after being damaged.ProsVinyl has the most options out of any kind of flooring. If you can think of a design or colors there is most likely a vinyl that is exactly what you want or extremely close to it. there is no worries about water or oils discoloring or deforming the vinyl. it is nearly scratch proof and needs nothing else to be cleaned then a good sweep and mopCons one of the biggest things is that it will stain quickly. It is necessary to clean spills as quickly as possible especially if they are chemical spills if installation is not done properly and the seems are noticeably bigger then they are suppose to be there is an extremely good chance of peeling
Living Room Color Schemes – the color of your living room should brighten any day up. When walking into your living room it should be the most comforting room in the house. So a lighter brighter color bring out the room and shows of what ever furniture you decide to put in the room.Flooring hardwood – hardwood is a better choice because unlike carpet liquids sit on top of the wood instead of being sucked in creating stains. It is easy to clean and if it is coated with resistant spray it last longer. Also having hardwood gives you the capability to put a rug were ever you please if you want to have carpet
Flooring Ceramic Tile – I would deffinitly choose ceramic tile for my kitchen for a couple reasons. The kitchen to me is the area of the house that should look cleanest and most up to date. With tile there are so many design choices and colors that it will fit with any other material in the kitchen. Tile is also sealed to be water proof and is easy to clean. Along with that there is so much movement in the kitchen that it is just a matter of time before someone drops a pot on the floor and a tile cracks. Well with tile instead of lifting the whole floor to replace one tile the tile can just have the grout strip up and the tile can be lifted out and replaced.
