2. The AIDPSC is an annual national interschool public
speaking competition.
The results of this competition are used to determine the
Australian team at the World Individual Debating and Public
Speaking Championships.
The competition takes place over three days, with speakers
competing across four events:
Debating
Interpretive Reading
Impromptu Speaking
Prepared Speech (Persuasive or After-Dinner)
3. Debating
Coordinate Debating (2 v 2).
45 minutes preparation time.
9 minutes speaking time.
Points of Information.
Requires a broad general knowledge.
4. Interpretive Reading
Read a passage 5 to 11 minutes in length, including a 1
minute introduction.
Focus is on conveying author’s intention.
Choice of text is crucial.
Delivery must be engaging and varied.
5. Impromptu Speaking
2 minutes preparation.
3 to 5 minutes speaking.
No notes, nothing prepared.
Choice of three topics.
Need to be fluent, confident, intelligent, structured and
engaging.
6. Persuasive Speech (Prepared)
7 to 13 minutes in length.
Must be delivered without notes (a single cue-card is
allowed but discouraged).
Problem/Solution approach. Both aspects must be
covered, although the time spent on each will depend on
the topic.
7. After-Dinner Speech (Prepared)
5 to 7 minutes in length.
Delivered to a specific audience.
Must be a unified speech (i.e. revolve around a certain
topic).
Must be very humorous and engaging, and ideally quite
intelligent.
Nothing offensive.

Dates: Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 September
9. College Teams
AIDPSC Team (Scores will count towards the overall
rankings. Members can be chosen for the WIDPSC team):
• 4 students from years 9 to 11.
Speakfest Team (Scores will don’t count towards the
overall rankings. Members cannot join the WIDPSC team):
• 4 students from years 9 to 10.
10. The Path to Selection
No one has the right to ‘expect’ a place on a team.
Trials will be held at the start of term 3.
Some training sessions will be offered, but you will be
personally responsible for your preparation.
The decision regarding who will form our team will be
based upon demonstrated ability, teamwork commitment
and a capacity for improvement.
11. Trials
Prepared Speech: speeches prepared for other
competitions (Norm Fary, Rostrum, PESA, Junior
Public Speaking, etc.) can be used, but will be judged
against AIDPSC criteria. No penalties for going under
time.
Interpretive Reading: extracts are provided on STL
Link. An introduction is NOT requied.
No penalties for going under time.
12. Trials
Impromptu Speaking: as per regular AIDPSC rules.
Two minutes preparation for 5 minutes speaking, with
no notes allows.
Interpretive Reading: as per Speakfest rules with
secret topics. Two v two format, 6 minute speaking
times, secret topics (45 minutes preparation) with
points of information allowed.
