Information from the Sign-Up Meeting

1. Year 7 and 8 Debating

2. What is it?
 The JSP is a fantastic introduction to debating.
 It is a friendly interschool competition open
to all students in years 7 and 8.
 No experience is necessary! The DAV provides
you with training, and a senior St Leonard’s
debater will act as a mentor for your team.
 There are three rounds of debates. There are
no finals or rankings, so the focus is on
learning new skills and trying your best.

3. Why do it?
 Become a better public speaker.
 Learn about, discuss and engage with
important social issues.
 Improve your analytical, critical thinking,
organisational and argumentative skills.
 Opens up lots of opportunities.
 It’s actually fun!

5.  St Leonard’s is the HOST SCHOOL for the
Brighton region. This means that all debates
will take place at St Leonard’s College.
 Debates take place at 6pm or 7pm.
 4 students per team (3 debating each round) is
ideal. Five students per team is the maximum.

6. DAV Training: Monday 15 August (Term 3 Week 6)
Round 1: Monday 29 August (Term 3 Week 8)
Round 2: Monday 10 October (Term 4 Week 2)
Round 3: Monday 24 October (Term 4 Week 4)
