2. Growth of Mobile
Past, Present and Future
As you see in this image, as reported by Gartner at the 2013 Symposium ITxpo, mobile devices will increase dramatically in the years to come. Thus the
importance of getting the mobile apps/sites up and running now. As the phone technology changes, so will the the function of the apps. As with anything
else, it is easier to make adjustments now than to scramble to get caught up, which can lead to a poorly designed site and app.
3. More use of tablets and smart
phones
Technology constantly changing
PC’s will be used less as time goes
on
With more people going away from the desktop pc’s. We will start carrying around 3 devices - smartphones, mini tablets and smart tablets.
Smart phones will never completely replace the way people get their information. Phones will primarily be used for calling, texting, light web surfing,
videos and photos, and listening to music
Mini tablets are good for composing emails or short documents, reading e-books, watching videos.
Smart tablets are starting to replace laptops, since they are lighter and more portable. Example: the Microsoft Surface
4. Impact on Web
Design
Site design has change to fit the way
consumers search the web
Large buttons
Menu and relative position
Minimalism
Large buttons: Instead of people using the mouse to click around on a page they are now using their finger, which is large, or a stylus. For the most part, it
will be their finger.
Menu position: You need to have in a position that will load. Since most devices load the left hand side of the web page
Relative positions: When the site is created you need to use percentages based on the different screen sizes in phones and tablets.
Minimalism: less is better. You want to focus on what is really important content
5. Technologies
Mobile device detection
Analytics
Site designs
Mobile device detection: This will help determine what phone or device is being used and adjust the site to fit the screen.
Analytics are important. You want to know what devices your audience/users are utilizing. This will help you when the site is needing to update. Not to
mention lead and traffic generation.
These two will help you in designing and updating your mobile site.
6. Web to Mobile
- No change from
desktop site to
mobile site
- Too cluttered
The mobile site is an exact replica of the desktop site. It is too much visually for people to take in.
7. Web to Mobile
!
- Simple and easy to
read
- Mobile friendly
The competition’s mobile site is more mobile friendly.
You can see the choices are clear and simple. Less choices.
