Geometry: An Art Exhibit

Cubism Art Style
• We will be continuing our kindergarten geometry unit with art!
• Each piece includes distinct lines, shapes, or patterns.
• These pieces of work will help us with our content skills; identifying
and describing shapes.
• I will provide information on each piece of artwork along with an art
vocabulary word relating to the painting. We will learn three new
words.
• Objectives for the lesson:
• I will identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes.
• I will describe pieces of art and how they make me feel.
• I will make connections between mathematics and art.
• I will use and define basic art terminology.
What is Cubism?
• Cubism is a style of art intended to energize and change art.
• This style often includes angles, lines, and shapes.
• These works of art are not meant to be realistic.
Discussion Questions:
• While viewing the works of art please consider the following
questions:
• How do these pieces of art make you feel?
• What is similar about all the pieces?
• What makes the pieces of art different from one another?
• What shapes do you see?
• What makes it easy for you to find shapes within the paintings?
• Did you expect to find so many shapes within the works of art?

continued to practice cubism
and experiment with abstract

• Vocabulary: Lines are a mark

• History: This artist enjoyed
painting about motion, the
city, and men working. This
particular painting is a boat
with houses in the
background.
• Vocabulary: Color is an
element of art. Some colors
in this piece are cool colors,
such as green, blue and
violet.

• History: Painted in 1920 and
shows a machine and its
parts.
• Vocabulary: Lines are marks
on the surface. Color is an
element of art.

painted on wood and plastic
in 1938. The shadows his
pieces create enhance them.
• Vocabulary: Creative is
having a skill or talent for
making things in a new or
different way.

• History: This is meant to
represent a bullfight. The
letters OREO stand for a
bullfighting magazine. This
was painted in the summer
of 1911 while Braque met
with Picasso in the French
Pyrenees.
• Vocabulary: Creative is
having a skill or talent for
making things in a new or
different way.

• History: This was painted in
1917. This shows a vase with
flowers, a glass, a journal,
and playing card. Jean was a
member of an art group
focusing on Cubism.
• Vocabulary: Lines are marks
on the surface.
Activities
• 1. Have students name shapes and describe them. This can be
done with 2D shapes, 3D, or both. As students begin learning
and recognizing shapes provide copies of some of these
paintings. Have student try to trace or find shapes within the
paintings. For additional math content have students count
how many of each shape they find.
• 2. Introduce the idea of putting shapes together to make a
new shape, such as two triangles to make a square. Allow
students to practice this skill. Then have each student make
their own piece of art by putting shapes together. Each
student can have their own shape artwork to bring home or
display.
• 3. Discuss and define the term lines. Have student make
shapes using lines only and identify the number of sides they
have.

Cubism Art Style • We will be continuing our kindergarten geometry unit with art! • Each piece includes distinct lines, shapes, or patterns. • These pieces of work will help us with our content skills; identifying and describing shapes. • I will provide information on each piece of artwork along with an art vocabulary word relating to the painting. We will learn three new words. • Objectives for the lesson: • I will identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes. • I will describe pieces of art and how they make me feel. • I will make connections between mathematics and art. • I will use and define basic art terminology.
  • 3. What is Cubism? • Cubism is a style of art intended to energize and change art. • This style often includes angles, lines, and shapes. • These works of art are not meant to be realistic.
  • 4. Discussion Questions: • While viewing the works of art please consider the following questions: • How do these pieces of art make you feel? • What is similar about all the pieces? • What makes the pieces of art different from one another? • What shapes do you see? • What makes it easy for you to find shapes within the paintings? • Did you expect to find so many shapes within the works of art?

  • 6. Vertical and Diagonal Planes • History: The artist shows diagonal elements, pattern, and contrast. The artist continued to practice cubism and experiment with abstract art. • Vocabulary: Lines are a mark on the surface.
  • 8. The Bargeman • History: This artist enjoyed painting about motion, the city, and men working. This particular painting is a boat with houses in the background. • Vocabulary: Color is an element of art. Some colors in this piece are cool colors, such as green, blue and violet.
  • 10. Mechanical Elements • History: Painted in 1920 and shows a machine and its parts. • Vocabulary: Lines are marks on the surface. Color is an element of art.

  • 12. New York, Number 18 • History: This piece was painted on wood and plastic in 1938. The shadows his pieces create enhance them. • Vocabulary: Creative is having a skill or talent for making things in a new or different way.
  • 13. Still Life with a Pair of Banderillas by George Braque
  • 14. Still Life with a Pair of Banderillas • History: This is meant to represent a bullfight. The letters OREO stand for a bullfighting magazine. This was painted in the summer of 1911 while Braque met with Picasso in the French Pyrenees. • Vocabulary: Creative is having a skill or talent for making things in a new or different way.

  • 16. Table by a Window • History: This was painted in 1917. This shows a vase with flowers, a glass, a journal, and playing card. Jean was a member of an art group focusing on Cubism. • Vocabulary: Lines are marks on the surface.
  • 17. Activities • 1. Have students name shapes and describe them. This can be done with 2D shapes, 3D, or both. As students begin learning and recognizing shapes provide copies of some of these paintings. Have student try to trace or find shapes within the paintings. For additional math content have students count how many of each shape they find. • 2. Introduce the idea of putting shapes together to make a new shape, such as two triangles to make a square. Allow students to practice this skill. Then have each student make their own piece of art by putting shapes together. Each student can have their own shape artwork to bring home or display. • 3. Discuss and define the term lines. Have student make shapes using lines only and identify the number of sides they have.
