2. History of Hockey: The NHL Draft
Prior to the establishment of the draft in 1963, NHL teams had historically sponsored amateur teams to which they placed
signed players for development. In order to provide member teams with an equal opportunity to acquire amateur players,
the league created a drafting system. The first draft was held in June 1963 and all amateur players, 17 years or older not
already sponsored by an NHL team, were eligible to be drafted.
By 1969, all sponsored teams had been phased out and every junior of qualifying age (20 years) was available for selection. In
1979 the Draft’s name was changed from “Amateur” to “Entry.” Starting in 1980 and continuing today, all 18-20 year old
North American and non-North American-born players have been eligible to be drafted. In addition, non-North American
players aged 21 years or older are eligible for claim.
Minnesota has done very well since the inception of the draft; there have been 66 Minnesotans drafted in the first and
second rounds starting in 1971. 2006 and 2007 were particularly satisfying to the State of Hockey with eighteen players being
taken in all seven rounds each year. In 2006, that number compared to seven Minnesotans being drafted by MBL, two by the
NFL, and one by the NBA.
In 2006, Bloomington’s Erik Johnson became the first Minnesotan to be selected first overall in
the NHL draft. A selection of the St. Louis Blues, the defenseman spent two years at Richfield’s
Academy of Holy Angels before moving on for further development at the US National Team
Development Program in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Johnson was a member of the bronze medal
winning US Junior team in 2006 and during the same college season, scored 24 points for the
Minnesota Golden Gophers while carding 10 points in the playoffs.
This year the Los Angeles Kings will host the 2010 NHL Entry Draft at STAPLES Center which is taking place June 25-26. This is
the first time Los Angeles has had the opportunity to host the draft.
