2. FOLKTALE
Panchatantra:
The Fox and
the Goat
come to help.
Suddenly, Dabbu heard a squeaky voice, “What on
earth are you doing down there?”Dabbu looked up
and much to his relief he found Laadla the goat
standing at the mouth of the well. He was a young
and gullible goat. Dabbu knew that Laadla was
innocent and ignorant of the world, as he was
always asking very irritating questions. Dabbu was
determined to get out of the well using Laadla’s
help.
It has never been difficult for a fox to fool a goat. He
said, “Aren’t you aware that there has been a huge
drought in the northern part of Bihar (they lived in
a jungle in Bihar)?” “Really? I haven’t heard of
anything as such,” said the innocent goat. Dabbu
replied, “That’s strange. Shantaram crow gave me
the news this morning and he has also seen it with
his own eyes as he was travelling from the same
area. That is why I jumped into this well to save
some water for myself.”
“Oh God, how terrible!” exclaimed Laadla and
jumped into the well in no time. As soon as Laadla
jumped into the well, Dabbu climbed on his long
horns and jumped out of the well.
Dabbu said, “You are such a silly creature. You are
not even aware that there have been floods all
around the northern part of the country, and you
believed my story of a drought. Instead of talking
about a frog in a well, now people will talk about a
goat in a well.”
Laadla was stupefied and said to himself, “One
should never trust anyone blindly.”
There was a fox called Dabbu. One day, he was very
happy after having a hearty meal. He had seen the
lion going for a stroll after his meal and had gone
into the lion’s den and gorged on the remains of
the lion’s feast. It was a sumptuous meal of deer
meat. “I wish I was lucky enough to have such a
feast every day,”Dabbu thought.
Dabbu started walking, looking at the clear sky,
singing his favorite song, much contented with his
lovely meal. He thought about film heroes and how
they would sing and walk like this when they were
in love.
Dabbu wasn’t in love, but he thought that the
emotional satisfaction obtained from a good meal
was no less than the feeling of being in love.
Dabbu’s eyes were almost filled with tears as
myriad emotional thoughts crossed his mind,
when he suddenly found himself falling into
something really deep.
“Dhuuummm, dhumm,” the sound came, and
Dabbu understood that he was in trouble. On
looking around he realized that he had fallen into a
shallow well. He was lucky that there wasn’t much
water in the well. It was a wide mouthed well that
Dabbu had noticed every day while passing by it. It
was only today that he was in lost in his thought
and had simply overlooked it. Dabbu was really
angry at himself for being so foolish and careless
and wanted to hit himself.
He tried his best to get out of the well by climbing
on its walls, but all in vain as the walls were too
slippery. Frustrated, he waited for someone to

Silly Poems
There are plenty feathers on a hen
And prickers on a rose,
There is plenty roaring in a den
Of lions, goodness knows;
There are plenty fishes in the lake
And islands in the sea;
There are plenty raisins in this cake
For even you and me.
Plenty
4. Sam Visits Fox Glacier
Discover a
new place
I am tandem skydiving from the Fox
Glacier in New Zealand! Or “Te
Moeka o Tuawe”as it is known by the
locals. I have jumped from the
height of a whopping 12,000 feet
which will result in a 65 second
free-fall along a 13 km long glacier!
They say that in terms of scenery the
Fox Glacier sky jump has it all and
now I can see why! My dive-guide
told me I will be able to see the rain-
forest, lakes, mountains and the wild Tasman Sea, not to mention the awe-inspiring Fox and
Franz Joseph Glaciers. And he wasn’t lying! The view is simply breath-taking! But you guys
know I’m scared of heights right? The Fox Glacier is so beautiful that I do try and take a peek
every two seconds. But I think I’m better suited to exploring with both feet firmly on the
ground! I don’t think I’m going skydiving again! Wuuf!

Which Letter Starts the Most
Words in the English Language?
Questions about the English Language
Which letter
could it be?
There are so many words in the English language.
Someyouknowandsomeyouareyettolearnand
discover. But have you ever wondered which
letter starts the most number of words in the
English language? You would think it would be a
vowel (A, E, I, O, U), wouldn't it?
No, not even close. It is the alphabet ‘S’ which has
more English words starting with it than any other
letter. The reason being, there are more clusters of
words that begin with ‘sc’, ‘sh,’, ‘sp’, or ‘st’. These
clusters also act as independent words.
Ifyoureallythinkaboutittherearesomanywords

SamuelMorse,theinventoroftheMorsecodewas
the first one who was curious to know the answer
to this question. So he used his techniques of
using codes to frequently used letters. Later an
analysis of the concise dictionary revealed ‘S’ as
the letter having most words. 4

Science in Art
comic story
It was a Sunday afternoon and Eeshan was playing board games with his friend Nitin.
They were waiting for Martin in Nitin’s house. Martin entered with a frown on his face.
What’s the matter Martin?
It is my art
class. The
children in the
class make
fun of me! I
am not good
at art so
they choose
to bully me.
Just teach them a lesson, with
science! Let me teach you some
ways where we can have a little
fun with art using science!

8. The children went to Nitin’s study room. Eeshan asked for some newspapers,
canvas sheets and crayons. He pinned the newspapers on the wall and laid them
out on the ground as well. Then he pinned a canvas sheet on the newspapers and
stuck the crayons on top of the sheet, pointed downwards.
Eeshan plugged it in and asked Martin to hold it in front of the crayons. He asked
him to wait. After about 3 minutes the crayons started to melt and spread on
the canvas. Eeshan moved the dryer in different directions and created beautiful
patterns of colours on the canvas. The children enjoyed the work of art.
Does your mother use a blow dryer for drying her hair?
Yes, it is in the bathroom.
I will get it.
This is abstract art. It simply
works on the principle that
wax crayons melt with heat!
9. Lactose is a sugar found in dairy and dairy products, such as milk, yoghurt, cheese, cot-
tage cheese, and ice cream amongst others. When anyone eats food containing lactose, it
is broken down by an enzyme called lactase – produced in the small intestine. The lactase
breaks lactose into simple sugars, which are later absorbed by the large intestine. For
those who are lactose intolerant, the body does not produce enough lactase and as a
result, unabsorbed lactose remains in the body. This can create symptoms which are
known as intolerance. If the symptoms are not extreme, they can often go unnoticed in
children and are sometimes chalked up to children simply disliking milk.
Children can experience nausea, bloating, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and gas if they
suffer from lactose intolerance. The simplest way to check if you're lactose intolerant is to
remove dairy products from your diet for two weeks to see if the symptoms of discomfort
go away. After two weeks, slowly reintroduce dairy products in small amounts and moni-
tor if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

Facts About Foxes
Foxes harness the earth's magnetic field to hunt.
The smallest fox, the fennec fox, weighs under 3
pounds - that's roughly the size of a kitten.
They are very playful, friendly and curious. They
love balls, which they often steal from golf courses
and backyards.
The arctic fox doesn't start to shiver in the cold until
its surroundings reach an icy cold -70 degrees
celcius.
My brother and I were playing catch
in our garden one evening when
we heard a rustle in the bushes. We
were startled and stopped playing
our game to go and investigate.
We couldn't spot anything and
went back to playing. Suddenly a
little head popped up behind the
bush, it was a little fox and he
was fascinated by our ball!
