SHED operates a full chain SWM system in camp 2 west covering 5525
households. It is a door-to-door collection system. Segregated waste is collected from
households and shops, afterwards, they are taken to the Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
where final segregation, weighting, and composting is done. This system is operated by 24
collection volunteers, 6 Material Recovery Facility (MRF) volunteers, and 1 MRF operator
operational logistics. Include half-cut drums for organic collection, large bags or sacs for
inorganic waste collection, sandbags for brown waste collection, and also used hand trolleys, or

Communitysensitization
» At the CIC office, in the presence of CIC, community leaders,
imams, and block majhis are informed about door-to-door
waste collection and waste segregation at the household level
and their cooperation is sought.

10. Every waste collected from the block is being weighted at the MRF so that easily can
calculate the waste generated per day per household. Waste collection monitoring tool
(log sheet) is used to monitor the incoming waste on daily basis.

Monitor temperature to maintain an active compost cycle.
Monitor moisture.
For Ventilate the shuffle every 2 weeks.
Good ratio of Carbon and Nitrogen waste (2:1 brown/green).
The workers must wear protective clothing while managing waste in the
compost plant.

ObservationsOf SWM
Learnings
» SWM can easily to made successful by increasing the awareness of
responsibility in the community by increasing the leadership. They
are motivated to do this because they get more messages from
consultation meetings, wash committee meetings, majhi block
wash committee meetings. Learning is that Solid Waste
Management (SWM) will be more effective for the smooth
functioning through community engagement and empowerment.
» Community people are aware about the compost production and
process through SWM system at MRF sites. From the MRF site
community people can received compost for vegetation or
plantation at their houses nearest area. Learning is Garbage can be
used to produce community nutrients.
