QAR (Question Answer Relationship) is a reading comprehension strategy that is good for standardised test such as NAPLAN. This presentation explains the strategy and its benefits for students.
2. QAR
Developed by Taffy Raphael, QAR is a strategy
that students can use to help them to answer
comprehension questions on reading tests. It
allows them to use both text information and
background knowledge rather than focusing on just
one strategy.
3. Teaching students QAR allows them to see that
answers from a question will either come from the text
(in the book) or from what they already know (in my
head).
4. Students can then break these up
into 4 different types of questions.
Right There, Think & Search,
Author & Me, On My Own
5.
6. Why is QAR beneficial
for NAPLAN?
Explicitly shows the relationship between questions
and answers
Allows students to recognise different types of
questions and how to answer them
Demonstrates to students that the text does not have
all the answers (right there questions)
7. QAR appears in over 70%
of NAPLAN questions?
