WHAT IS IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS, is designed to
assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work in a different
country where English is the primary language of communication.
The first time it was started in 1989. IELTS test is considered as one of the popular

countries. This test is managed by 3 major institutes, which is British Council, IDP
(IELTS Australia) and, University of Cambridge ESOL Examination.

4 Basic Skills for IELTS
The exam mainly measures the ability of test-takers to communicate in the four basic
language skills –
Listening,
Reading,
Speaking,
Writing.
It evaluates your English on the basis of Receptive Skills and Productive Skills.
Under Receptive Skills comes – Listening and Reading and Productive Skills carries – Writing
and Speaking.

LISTENING
Listening is going to be your first test. It will have 4 sections. These sections are will be in the
order of difficulty, which is the first question will be the easiest, whereas the last one will be
the most difficult one. It is going to be of 40 minutes. You need to answer 40 questions while
you listen to the audio. You’ll be providing an audio clip and a booklet in your hand. You’ll be
given some time to go through some few questions. At the end of the test, you will get 10
minutes extra to transfer the answer from the question booklet to an answer sheet

READING
It is going to be of- 60 minutes. It is different for General and Academic test, unlike Listening
and Speaking that is same for General and Academic. Reading has 3 sections for both General
and Academic.
General Test will have 1 or 2 texts, based upon which you need to answer 40 questions.
These 40 questions will be in the order of difficulty, that is section 1 will be the easiest,
whereas section 3 will gonna be a little difficult.
Academic Test will have 1 long passage from each section. Based upon which you have to
answer 40 questions.

WRITING
It will take 60 minutes and even this section is a little different for both General and Academic
both. Writing will have 2 tasks. In both the test you will have 20 minutes in task 1 and 40
minutes for task 2.
In the General test, you will have a Letter in task 1 and an Essay in task 2. The letter could be
Formal, Informal or Semi-formal.
In Academic test, you will have to summarize a Text in task 1 and task 2 will carry an Essay.
The summary in Academic will be on the basis of Image. That could be in the form Charts,
Graphs or Diagrams.

SPEAKING
Speaking is basically a one to one interaction between examiner and candidate, which is
recorded. It’ll check your ascent, vocabulary and how you pronounce your thoughts. Speaking
has 3 sections in all.
Section 1 – A brief introduction, which will be followed by short a short Q&A conversation.
Section 2 – It will be an individual speaking. In this, the examiner will give you a topic to
speak, on which you will have to speak on for 1- 2 minutes
Section 3 – It will be discussion round, here examiner will ask you 5-6 questions based upon
upon the topic that will be given to you in section 2.

SPOKEN ENGLISH
