Know your voting rights
All European residents
have the right to vote in
local elections
Here’s how to register!
As a resident citizen of
Ibiza, you can participate in
a more positive and effective
way, with decisions that af-fect
you, by exercising your
rights to vote in the next
local elections, due to take
place on the 25th of May
2015. However, to do this,
you will need to register
yourself in the list of voters
(censo electoral).
European residents of
Ibiza above the age of 18
years old have the right to
vote in local elections, with
very few exceptions.
In order to do this, you
will need to:
1. Obtain a certificate
of Identity in Spain (NIE),
if you don’t already have
one. You can do this by tak-ing
your passport along to
the National Police station
(next to Diario de Ibiza on
the ring road around Ibiza
town).
2. Apply for ‘Residen-cy’
(empadronamiento) in
one of the five municipalities
of the island. (you should do
this as soon as possible, as
the time needed to process
your details varies in each
municipality).
3. Go to your local
town hall (Ayuntamiento)
and declare your intention
to vote in the next elections,
so that you can be included
in the electoral censor. (you
must do this at least 2 months
before the elections).
4. Pass by your local
election centre on the day
of the elections and exercise
your right to vote for the po-litical
party you would like to
support. (ask in the local town
hall where you are registered
for information about where
the voting will take place, as
it may be in a public school
or other building in the same
town or village).
