This document outlines a research proposal for a study on the impact of flipped classrooms and mobile learning. The study will take place at Sharjah Women's College in the UAE, which has about 2,000 female students between ages 17-25 from Sharjah and surrounding emirates. Through needs analysis including interviews and observations, the author identified flipped classroom and mobile learning using Moodle as an approach to potentially improve student English skills. The research will use a correlation study to examine relationships between variables like age, gender, language and students' use of reading articles or videos in Moodle discussions. Data will be collected through surveys and observations, following ethics guidelines to protect student privacy and confidentiality. The expected results could benefit education in
2. Internship
Sharjah Women’s College is a big institute in
the United Arab Emirates that composed of
about two thousands female students who are
between17 to 25 years old. Students in SWC
come from Sharjah as well as the north of
Emirates. This college has different
departments and each one provides more
than four programs.
3. Needs Analysis
After interview people in my internship and
observing students. I came up with an
innovation idea that compatible with internship.
This ideas is flipped classroom and the use of
mobile learning.
4. What is flipped classroom
Flipped classroom is a approach where
teachers shift the inverting traditional methods
of teaching to engage students in the learning
process. This can be through the use of
technology by moving lectures out the
classroom and delivering online. In order to
free up and allot class time for interaction and
collaborative activities which assimilate
students knowledge through the following
learning style, problem-solving, discussion and
debates.
5. CMS Support
Moodle knows as one of Learning management systems and in
my position I would use it for significant reasons. First reason is
that one of Moodle property is the ability to be install in all
different brands of platforms whether computers or mobile
learning. This facilitates accessibility of students to the
materials and activities in Moodle anywhere and anytime. As a
result, students performance will increase because they can
practice a lot. Another particular reason is Moodle has more
than one feature that support the flipped classroom purpose.
These features are
Developing Lessons
Designing discussion boards, assessment and quiz with
specific rubric,
Embedding videos (edutainment)
Embedding social media networking accounts
Short Movies, storytelling,
Adding resources (video, file, book)
6. Example
Discussion board in Moodle
Discussing
a topic where students should search
to find the needed information
Reading to understand the topic
Thinking and analysising the results
writing an essay or creating mind map to explain
their understanding
comparing between their posts of their colleagues
Teachers evaluate students’ work based on the
discussion board rubric
8. Objective
The use of flipped classroom by teachers impact
positively in students learning which means
their English will improve because students
engage more and they become active learners
in the learning process. Due to the use of
desirable tools such as video and social media
networking.
9. Research Methods
Research methodology
Correlation study and reflective study
Why?
I am going to have several statements from a
group of subjects.
The two statements are students use reading
article in Moodle discussion board in system of
flipped classroom and another group who is
watching video in Moodle discussion board in the
same system.
The variables in this study are students’ age,
gender, language, Emirate and English language
band
The correlation study allowed us to test our
hypothesis and defined whether the association
10.
As I am going to use survey as a main data collection tool in
my dissertation, then the correlation study would be the
best study for this type of methods. As a Doctor Janet has
explained the data collection with correlation study
article in the following sentence, “You may collect your
data through testing (e.g. scores on a knowledge test
(an exam or math test, etc.), or psychological
tests, numerical responses on surveys &
questionnaires, etc.”
I would use reflective practice method because we will
have the ability to observe students during class time.
This method might be difficult with flipped classroom
because as a part of this teaching method students
should do some active learning process outside class
where I would not be able to observe them.
In contrast, there is an ability to argue on students’
behaviors through reading and tracking their posts and
activities. In fact, this way will take long time and effort
for me as a teacher-student.
11. Measurement and Data
Collection
Survey
Why?
it is cheap and easy to be administrate compared to
other methods like face to face interview, telephone
interview, electronic mailing, focus group and videos.
Each student receives the same questions and
instructions in the same format, so that the possibility of
response bias is lessened
it preserves the confidentiality in contrast to the other
methods because if there are any private questions, the
participants prefer to write answers rather than saying
them.
there is no influence by using this questionnaire for
interviews.
12.
Observation
Why?
The first reason has been explained on (Barbara,
2005) in the following sentence, “Participant
observation can be used to help answer descriptive
research questions, to build theory, or to generate or
test hypotheses”.
This method will help us as participant observers to
develop holistic understanding. By watching students’
expression of nonverbal feelings, finding out the
interaction process between them.
As well as defining the communication approaches
between teacher-students and student-student.
13. Ethics
With this research, I would follow ACA code of ethics
(American Counseling Association).
Privacy and confidentiality
Questionnaire
is not asked students to write their
names
questionnaire will be stored in online database where
no one can access to it until completing the whole
project and after that we will destroy unneeded
materials
all questions will be related to the research and no
offending questions are going to be provided
14.
Permission to conduct our study will be taken from the
college manager and Information Technology
supervisor.
Informed consent paper
To explain observation contents and approaches that
we are going to use
all the ways of dealing with images and students
information. In order to keep confidentiality
between us and to protect students from any
harm.
Related to ACA code of ethics, “ Use of data derived
from counseling relationships for purposes of
training, research, or publication is confined to
content that is disguised to ensure the anonymity of
the individuals involved.”
Finally, an approval will be taken from Higher
15. Research Project Result will benefit education in the
UAE because it coverts the idea of teaching and
learning process in education. In addition, the result
of research and the research it self write and
investigate by Emirate student.
