1. Reading Questions
In every question:
 Read the text carefully
 Use quotes
 Take quotes from across the text
 Identify what is said and what it suggests
LOCATING DETAILS – finding EVIDENCE
Find evidence from across the text that answers the question. Make sure you
add a small comment if needed.
BBQ Tongs skill = picking out quotes
EXPLAINING IMPRESSIONS – or ideas, attitudes, values, opinions,
viewpoints, feelings, thoughts etc EVIDENCE and EXPLAIN
Crystal ball skill – Basically what does the writer think or feel? Use what the
text says and then ‘infer’ – meaning, what is the writer suggesting/thinking –
tell the examiner what is said and show them what it means! Be a mind-reader.
CRAFT OF THE WRITER / ANALYSIS QUESTION – basically think about
why the writer has made certain decisions. Drill down at words and look
closely at the text! EVIDENCE, EXPLAIN and ANALYSE, LINK
Magnifying Glass skill – zoom in on language and write about what words
suggest, imply, connote. Think about the what the writer is intending to do –
use words like the writer uses/shows/tells/decides/selects
COMPARISON QUESTION This question is about organisng your ideas
clear and making links between the texts. EVIDENCE, EXPLAIN, LINK
(i.e. COMPARE)
Big coloured pens – make sure you use a different colour for each text
(remember this is imaginary – only use blue or black for real!) Use the headings to
organise your answer, use evidence from each text and then make some links – i.e. text
A has similar ideas/uses similar language to text B . .
Revision Backpack – make sure you use
every item in your backpack!
