VDOT announced February 19 it will lay off
450 hourly employees statewide this month to
help reduce staffing costs. The cuts are designed
to address the projected $2.6 billion shortfall in
transportation revenues during the next six years.
Stunkel said VDOT will reduce its staff of 8,330 to
7,500 by July 1, for a total cut of 830 jobs.
Stunkel said a closing date for the Bowling Green
residency has not yet been determined. He added
that he “seriously doubted” that federal stimulus
money would keep the residency open.
