U.S. funding for future promises lags by trillionsUSA TODAYThe federal government's financial condition deteriorated rapidly last year, far beyond the $1.5 trillion in new debt taken on to finance the budget deficit, a USA TODAY analysis shows. The government added $5.3 trillion in new financial obligations in 2010, largely for retirement programs such as Medicare and Social Security. That brings to a record $61.6 trillion the total of financial promises not paid for. This gap between spending commitments and revenue last year equals more than one-third of the nation's gross domestic product.Medicare alone took on $1.8 trillion in new liabilities, more than the record deficit prompting heated debate between Congress and the White House over lifting the debt ceiling.Social Security added $1.4 trillion in obligations, partly reflecting longer life expectancies. Federal and military retirement programs added more to the financial hole, too.Corporations would be required to count these new liabilities when they are taken on — and report a big loss to shareholders. Unlike businesses, however, Congress postpones recording spending commitments until it writes a check. The $61.6 trillion in unfunded obligations amounts to $534,000 per household. That's more than five times what Americans have borrowed for everything else — mortgages, car loans and other debt. It reflects the challenge as the number of retirees soars over the next 20 years and seniors try to collect on those spending promises.
Scotland to split from UK and 'be a nation again'? With a referendum looming, critics allege an independent Scotland would likely be at odds with the US on many issues msnbc.com msnbc.com6/7/2011 5:52:40 AM ET 2011-06-07T09:52:40 LONDON — It is the nation that once ran the largest empire the world has ever known, a country so powerful that it claimed to "rule the waves" in a patriotic anthem. But last month a "political tsunami" struck the United Kingdom and this once-mighty state faces being broken up.An astonishing victory for nationalists in the Scottish parliamentary elections means it is almost certain that a referendum will be held within five years on whether Scotland should leave the U.K. and become an independent country.
June 8, 2011 06:15pm ESTMassive Solar Flare Misses Earth, but Are We Ready for the Big One?Although yesterday's solar flare won't seriously harm the Earth, the potential for an extreme event is on the rise. Is the world prepared?Massive Solar Flare Misses Earth, but Are We Ready for the Big One? How to Prepare for a Major Solar Storm  The Sun roared out a huge solar flare yesterday. NASA caught it on film, ranking the spectacular blast as a Class-M flare, just one spot below the the most disruptive type of flare, X. Even so, NASA says it will give Earth a mere "glancing blow," and the National Weather Service expects it will cause only minor disruptions to satellites and power grids. It could have been much worse. For centuries, solar flares have been responsible for a multitude of earth-bound calamities, from blackouts to disrupted communications to strange lights in the sky. In 1859, the biggest flare on record hit, creating auroras worldwide and interrupting telegraph service for weeks. Considering today's connected world—and our reliance on satellites—a major solar storm could be disastrous. The sun is entering a particularly active time, says NASA, and big flares like the one from yesterday will likely be common during the next few years, with solar activity expected to peak around 2013. Most solar flares will only cause minor problems with satellites and power grids, but there's always a chance that a monster like the one from 1859 could hit."The worst-case scenario is an extreme event," says Michael Hesse, chief of NASA's Space Weather Laboratory at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. "If it were to happen and we don't take any precautions, it would probably knock out our power grid for an extended period of time and destroy a sizable fraction of our satellite infrastructure.“"This is not something we expect to happen tomorrow," he cautions. "But it's like the impact of a hurricane on a specific location. You don't expect it to happen tomorrow, but you might want to think about if it were to happen."
Herman Cain Wants A ‘Great Wall Of China’ Or A ‘Moat With Alligators’ Along Mexican BorderJune 8th, 2011MEDIAite.comRepublican presidential candidate Herman Cain spoke to an enthusiastic audience in Iowa and unveiled some ideas for how he would keep illegal immigrants from entering the United States along our southern border. While his critics might conclude this is proof that Cain is a fringe, non-serious candidate, supporters of his could just as easily argue that Cain was merely firing up the crowd with his proposal that included alligators, since he was clearly joking – right?Cain rallied his supporters, saying:I just got back from China. Ever heard of the Great Wall of China? It looks pretty sturdy. And that sucker is real high. I think we can build one if we want to! We have put a man on the moon, we can build a fence! Now, my fence might be part Great Wall and part electrical technology. . . . Put me in charge of the fence and it will be a twenty foot wall, barbed wire, electrified on the top. And on this side of the fence, I’d have that moat that President Obama talked about. And I would put those alligators in that moat!At least on the wall part of the proposal Cain seems serious, since many conservatives have long argued for an impenetrable fence. Yet regardless of how serious Cain intended to be with these statements, it’s no surprise why Cain’s popularity is increasing. How can you not show some admiration for a presidential candidate who so casually and humorously describes the Great Wall of China with this praise: “that sucker is real high!”
Schumer seeks crackdown on website selling heroin, cocaine7:08 AM, Jun. 6, 2011   ALBANY — Two U.S. senators said Sunday they will ask federal authorities to crack down on a secretive narcotics market operated on the Internet with anonymous sales and untraceable currency.Heroin, cocaine and methamphetamines are among the drugs being sold in the well-protected website, apparently operating for just a few months.Sens. Charles Schumer of New York and Joe Manchin of West Virginia, both Democrats, said they asked the Justice Department and Drug Enforcement Administration to shut down and investigate the website, often referred to as the Silk Road after an ancient Asian trade route. This audacious website should be shut down immediately," Manchin said."Never before has a website so brazenly peddled illegal drugs online," Schumer said. "By cracking down on the website immediately, we can help stop these drugs from flooding our streets.“A key to the illicit trade is use of a network by buyers and sellers that conceals their identity.Websites including Gawker have reported on the site.Schumer said the website began operating in February and uses "layers" of secrecy to thwart authorities. Sellers are told to make shipments in vacuum-sealed bags to avoid drug-detecting dogs.Democrat and Chronicle.com
2011-05-30 - - AHN News Mona Lisa grave hunters find skeleton FLORENCE, ITALY (AHN) -- Italian archeologists and art historians looking for the remains of Mona Lisa have dug up a 500-year-old skeleton in the former convent where the model of the famous painting is believed to be buried. The skeleton of an adult woman that includes parts of a skull and pelvis were found in the convent of Saint Orsola in Florence, Italy, according to Giorgio Gruppioni, an archaeology professor from the University of Bologna and coordinator of the excavation project.Carbon-dating and DNA tests will be conducted to confirm if the skeleton really belongs to a woman or the noblewoman Lisa Gherardini Del Giocondo, who died in 1542. Del Giocondo is believed to be the model for the Mona Lisa painting of Leonadroda Vinci. Extracted DNA will be compared with Mona Lisa's two children buried in the Santissima Annunziata church, also in Florence. The search for Mona Lisa's remains aims to get her DNA and use it to reconstruct her face. The facial reconstruction will then be compared to the face in the Mona Lisa painting. Historians believe that wealthy silk merchant Francesco del Giocondo commissioned da Vinci to paint his wife, Lisa Gherardini, in December 1502.

Face Time With the HK416—The Gun That Killed Bin Laden Popular MechanicsJune 9, 2011 The World's Newest Celebrity WeaponHeads turn eagerly as painfully bright sunlight pours through an opening door of a dark New York City warehouse. Smiles mix with the winces; a celebrity has arrived. Two men in black T-shirts step into the shadowy building, carrying opposite ends of a large green case; they place it carefully on a table. One unlocks the clasps and cracks open the case, revealing two disassembled Heckler & Koch 416 carbine rifles. The HK416 is, as of May 2011, the world's newest celebrity weapon. Enough off-the-record sources have told reporters that it is the gun that killed Osama bin Laden that this detail has become accepted history, even though the Pentagon and HK won't admit it. It is undoubtedly true that U.S. special forces helped create and use this weapon, making it a logical choice for the Naval Special Warfare Development Group operators who swept bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.
Casino to employ busty female dealersTuesday, June 7th, 2011A casino stung for more than $11 million by two high-rolling Blackjack players is fighting back – by using busty female dealers in basques to distract the players. The Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, USA, has been hit by two of the biggest wins in gambling history, resulting in the casino’s first loss on blackjack in its history.Bosses have now hired an army of sexy women dealers who wear basques and suspenders in an attempt to take the players’ eyes off their cards. The decision to sex up the tables follows the incredible exploits of Don Johnson and another, as yet unnamed, card shark.Johnson, 49, took The Tropicana for $5.8 million in April, resulting in the casino losing $1.8 million overall at the blackjack tables in one month. It was the first time a casino has lost money in Blackjack over a sustained period since gambling in the New Jersey town was legalised in 1978.And last week another high-roller, playing blackjack, crabs and mini-baccarat took the casino for $5.3 million in an incredible six-hour hot streak. The wealthy gambler left a $150,000 tip.
The 12-year-old who could become America's youngest ever 'lifer' for killing two-year-old brotherMailOnLine6th June 2011Charged: If convicted, Cristian Fernandez, 12, could become the youngest American to face life in prisonProsecutors want to lock a 12-year-old boy up for the rest of his life - to stop him from killing again.Cristian Fernandez could become America's youngest ever 'lifer' after being charged as an adult over the murder of his two-year-old brother.Prosecutor Angela Corey said: 'We have to protect the public from this young man'. She recommended that he face trial as an adult.Ms Corey said the public had a 'right to be protected' from him.If Fernandez were charged as a juvenile and convicted he would be free by the time he is 21.Fernandez is alleged to have beaten his younger brother David Galarriago to death at their home in Jacksonville, Florida, in March. The two-year-old died from a fractured skull that caused bleeding on the brain. He died two days after being admitted to a hospital. An autopsy showed the injuries were caused with blunt force trauma consistent with being punched in the head.Fernandez had previously assaulted his brother and broken his leg.Prosecutors decided to charge Fernandez as an adult rather than a juvenile defender after reviewing his history of violence and behaviour.
You’ll Get Up When This Alarm Goes OffEveryone knows that time is money, and getting out the door a little late can cost you a fair chunk of change – after all, your job isn’t going to pay you for a full first hour if you show up fifteen minutes late. Sometimes the urge to sleep in can outweigh the urge to make it to work on time. The Money Shredding Alarm Clock makes it way more expensive to sleep in by shredding your cash if you don’t get up on time. It might be tempting to sleep in, but if you’ve got a stack of hundreds that are about to be destroyed, chances are you’ll get out of bed.

New Unimog Looks Like Poison FrogJune 7, 2011   The mighty Unimog is 60 years old, and Mercedes-Benz is celebrating with an all-new amphibian-inspired Unimog concept that hints at off-road vehicles of the past and future.Based on the current U 5000 chassis, the “Concept Design 60 Years Unimog” (something got lost in translation) is an homage to extreme off-roaders past. With prominent fenders and a bright green hood, it’s also intentionally reminiscent of a poison dart frog. Mercedes-Benz said the comparison is accurate, as the both the frog and the ‘Mog are “extremely mobile both in water and on land.”Like the first-ever example that rolled out of the plant in Gaggenau, Germany, on June 3, 1951, the 60 Years Unimog is an open-air vehicle, with seats the driver and passenger can easily hop into. Considering that the incredibly awesome Unimog is frequently seen in war zones and construction sites, it’s a safe bet a roof will be standard equipment for years to come. The designers also made sure to highlight one of the Unimog’s most important features: an incredibly beefy suspension with massive coil springs. All that suspension travel allows the truck to seemingly defy the laws of physics by keeping all four wheels on the ground even at the most extreme angles. On the 60 Years Unimog, the springs are painted a shade of red that’s sure to make the marketing department and dealers smile.
Lightning flashes around the ash plume at above the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano chain near Entrelagos June 5. The volcano in the Puyehue-Cordon Caulle chain, dormant for decades, erupted in south-central Chile on Saturday, belching ash over 6 miles (10 km) into the sky, as winds fanned it toward neighboring Argentina, and prompted the government to evacuate several thousand residents.
Volcanic lightning is seen over the Puyehue volcano, over 500 miles south of Santiago, Chile, Sunday June 5, 2011. Authorities have evacuated about 600 people in the nearby area. The volcano was calm on Sunday, one day after raining down ash and forcing thousands to flee, although the cloud of soot it had belched out still darkened skies as far away as Argentina.
Switzerland's Answer to Dirty Prostitution? 'Sex Boxes‘TIME  Friday, June 03, 2011 This post is in partnership with Worldcrunch, a new global news site that translates stories of note in foreign languages into English. The article below was originally published in the Tages-Anzeiger.ZURICH — Local officials have decided that this city's expanding legal sex industry needs to be better organized. Zurich municipal authorities have proposed a series of changes to existing prostitution regulations that would allow prostitutes to continue plying their trade, but only in three specific zones — including one equipped with new booths to welcome their clients. The proposed measures, which need the city council's approval, include forbidding street prostitution along the Sihlquai riverbank and in the busy Langstrasse area. In exchange, the activity will be allowed between Aargauerstrasse and Würzgrabenstrasse, outside the city center, where booths will be built to accommodate sex workers and their customers. (See pictures of South Korean prostitutes protesting the closing of brothels.)Street prostitutes will still be allowed to work in the city's pedestrian nightlife area, the centrally located Niederdorf, and solicit vehicle-driving clients in AllmendBrunau. The Zurich city council expects the new laws will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2012.Presenting the new measures to the media at a town-hall press conference on May 25 were three of Zurich's nine city councilors: Claudia Nielsen, Daniel Leupi and Martin Waser, who are responsible, respectively, for policies on health and environment, the police and social issues.Leupi explained that the city council's goal in introducing the measures was to combat human trafficking, offer appropriate response to victims, minimize the spread of sexually transmitted diseases and protect both sex workers and the population at large from violence. (Does Mexico City need a red-light district?)City councilor Waser explained that at peak hours, when up to 120 sex workers can operate at the same time, street solicitation can be a real disturbance to ordinary people — thus the need to channel the activity to designated areas.

Sex education: Why ARE so many female teachers having affairs with their teenage students... and is the 'cougar effect' to blame?29th May 2011Charged: Nicole Letcher, an English teacher at Fulton High School, Illinois, has been charged with six counts of sex abuse with a 16-year-old As school years go, this one has been riddled with sex scandal. But it's not droves of male teachers who are being arrested and charged for having sex with their under-age students - it's females. And as yet another young, female teacher is this week arrested for allegedly having sex with her 16-year-old student, the MailOnline asks: what's happened to America's female teachers? The latest case involves 26-year-old Nicole R Letcher, a teacher at Fulton High School, Illinois, who has been charged with six counts of sex abuse with a minor.Letcher, who teaches English at the school where she actually went herself, is currently being held on a $50,000 bond and has been suspended until further notice.Ashford University also recently awarded the teacher a full scholarship for an MA in education, Letcher joins a long line of female sex predators operating in U.S. schools. This month alone the MailOnline has reported on six cases all involving female teachers who have been allegedly indulging in sexual relations with teenage boys.Leading child psychologist, Dr Michael Oberschneider, of Ashburn Psychological Services, puts the increase of cases down to the blurring of boundaries between teachers and their students. But he also has something to say about the potential influence of TV shows like Cougar Town and films which seem to celebrate the so-called 'Mrs Robinson' effect.'As a nation we are over sexulising things,' he told MailOnline. 'Our prime time shows are becoming very graphic, we have TV shows that encourage 'cougars' - they're saying isn't it a wonderful idea for older women?
Virginia inmate sues after gruesome tries at sex changeAssociated Press June 7, 2011ADILLWYN, Va. — Crouched in her cell, Ophelia De'lonta hoped three green disposable razors from the prison commissary would give her what the Virginia Department of Corrections will not — a sex change. It had been several years since she had felt the urges, but she had been fighting them for weeks. But like numerous other times, she failed to get rid of what she calls "that thing" between her legs, the last evidence she was born a male.Months after the October castration attempt, De'lonta filed a federal lawsuit Friday claiming the state has failed its duty to provide adequate medical care because it won't give her the operation. She says the surgery is needed to treat her gender identity disorder, a mental illness in which people believe they were born the wrong gender. If she wins, De'lonta would be the nation's first inmate to receive a state-funded sex change operation. Similar lawsuits have failed in a handful of other states, and lawmakers in some states are trying to ban the use of taxpayer money for the operations. If she loses, she says she will continue to try self-surgery — acknowledging another attempt could kill her

New inventionSpain patents easy-on condoms- 06/07/2011 This latest invention means putting on a condom will no longer be "boring“ and for many - "including blind people" - the task will be made easier as it is just a question of finding the two strips.Putting on a condom will now become much easier thanks to a simple new system which the (female) mind behind the invention recently patented in her home country of Spain. Thanks to two simple little disposable strips, those who tend to get nervous and flustered at the crucial moment, and even the blind, will no longer have difficulties putting on a sheath.MaríaÁngelesMachuca, a businesswoman from the Andalusian city of Seville, though currently living in Cádiz, spent three years working on her design, for which she faced competition from just two other innovators, one in the US and another in China."The idea first occured to a friend of mine who is a civil engineer. One day when we were chatting he told me he thought putting on a condom would be easier if they had two strips. I thought it was a brilliant idea and began to develop it," said the 54-year-old inventor during an interview with Spanish news agency EFE.Machuca believes the idea has potential because, given its ease-of-use, the moment when you put on the condom will cease to be "boring". She also says it will make the task much easier for many "such as the blind" who will now simply have to open the packet and look for the strips."What is more, it is much more hygienic," says the businesswoman, adding that in the United States "they have already sold more than a million condoms" of the same invention, while in China it has become the latest "star product".

Lake Wales Couple Made and Sold Porn at Home, Arrest Report SaysTHE LEDGERJune 4, 2011 LAKE WALES | Kimberly Kupps began the weekend by logging onto Twitter and greeting her 672 followers: "morning fellow tweeters happy Friday...“But the day wouldn't end happily for Kupps, a name that Polk County deputies say is the porn-video persona of Lake Wales resident Theresa Taylor. She and her husband, Warren Taylor, were jailed Friday night after a deputy spent three months investigating porn videos the couple made at home and sold online, arrest reports say.The Polk County Sheriff's Office began investigating Theresa Taylor, 55, in March after receiving tips that she was making and distributing porn from her home at 926 S. Lakeshore Blvd., her arrest report said.An investigator paid the initial $19.95 membership fee to her website, kimberlykupps.com, where he found videos of Theresa Taylor having sex with men and women, as well as offering some of the clothes she wore in the videos for sale. The investigator downloaded six videos, burned them to CDs and allowed County Judge Reinaldo Ojeda to review them. On April 7, Ojeda ruled the videos were obscene material under state law.The investigator also noted in the arrest report several messages sent by Theresa Taylor through her Twitter account since June. In one, Taylor said she had finished filming a porn video at her home with a "good looking male subject from Italy.“During questioning, Warren Taylor, 58, said he filmed the videos downloaded by the investigator and uploaded them for sale on the website clips4sale.com. The husband said the couple made an average of $700 monthly for the past four months.Warren Taylor was booked on six counts each of wholesale promotion of obscene material and distribution of obscene material, a misdemeanor.Theresa Taylor was booked on six counts each of selling obscene material and distributing obscene material, both misdemeanors. She was also charged with the felony wholesale promotion of obscene material.
Man seeking sex change tries to fake own deathInvestigators say the pair lost custody of their children after their underage daughter caught the ex-husband having sex with a blow up doll. KFOR-TV June 8, 2011STILLWATER, Okla. -- A divorced couple in Stillwater is behind bars accused of a strange crime. The pair allegedly tried to fake the man's death to escape arrest warrants and so he could start a new life as a woman. The couple is now charged with false reporting of a crime.  Investigators say the pair lost custody of their children after their underage daughter caught the ex-husband having sex with a blow up doll.Late last month, the ex-wife Heather Davis told police she dropped off William Davis at his favorite fishing spot in Lake Carl Blackwell.Just hours later, Heather claimed William went missing. When the alleged lakeside disappearance story quickly unraveled, police say Heather came clean.  According to court records, she admitted, "William told her he would give up his parental rights to their children and get a sex change if she assisted him in the faked death.""He had some outstanding warrants and there was visitation issues. So the plan was to report him missing so he could get a sex change operation. Then he could return to the family with a different identity," Stillwater police Captain Randy Dickerson said. The couple's neighbors had plenty to say about the ill-conceived custody plot."Why give up your kids and mess that up to help him out? I'd have told him to jump in a lake somewhere," RC Cox said."That's crazy and to do this for a sex change? That's a bit ridiculous," Rhonda Williams said.Once in jail, Heather allegedly claimed, "She went along with the plan because she wanted William out of her life."A day after Heather's arrest, William turned himself in to police.  At first he claimed he had been robbed at the lake and that's why he disappeared.Later he admitted that wasn't true.

  • 2. U.S. funding for future promises lags by trillionsUSA TODAYThe federal government's financial condition deteriorated rapidly last year, far beyond the $1.5 trillion in new debt taken on to finance the budget deficit, a USA TODAY analysis shows.
  • 7. 2011-05-30 - - AHN News Mona Lisa grave hunters find skeleton FLORENCE, ITALY (AHN) -- Italian archeologists and art historians looking for the remains of Mona Lisa have dug up a 500-year-old skeleton in the former convent where the model of the famous painting is believed to be buried.
