• The official currency of Australia is the dollar, 
The abbreviation is the next simbols: $, A$ 
,AU$  to differentiate it to the American 
dollar. On February 14th in 1966 the 
Australian dollar replaced the Australian 
pound.

Origin
In Australia there are 3 stages:
• Ancient
• Colonisation
• Post federation
Ancient
Australia was not always in the location and shape it is recognised today. 
Millions of years ago, it was part of the the great land mass called 
Gondwanaland. 
Colonization
At the time of colonization of Australia, Great Britain was in 
need of new land to place its convicts.
Post federation
The Post Federation period was marked by the two world 
wars. 
Weather
Weather
• Natural hazards: Forest fires, severe droughts 
and cyclones along the coast.
• Weather in Sydney, New South Wales

Summer ( December to February)
• Weather in Melbourne, Victoria
Rainfall is highest from May to October

It is the driest of all cities

Geography
Seas: It is surrounded by the Indian, Pacific and Antarctic Glacial, is separated from Asia by the 
Arafura and Timor seas.
Rivers: the two most important rivers are the Murray and Darling.
Terrain: Mostly low plateau with Deserts and fertile plains in the
South east.
Highest point: Mount Kosciuszko 2,229m.
Uluru: is one of the most famous natural icons of Australia, also called 'Ayers Rock'. It is located 
in the middle of Australia. Urulu is a sacred place for Australian Aborigines
Government 
The Australian Confederation is a constitutional 
monarchy and it has a parliamentary system of 
government.
There are three differents power structures:
•Judiciary
•Executive
•Legislature
There are three very important political parties: Labour 
Party, Liberal Party and National Party.  Actually the 
Laborist Party is in the power with the Prime minister 
Julia Guillard.

Australia Day is celebrated on 26th January 
So why the 26th January? when the British arrived in New South Wales to build their 
penal colony. 
Anzac day
ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand.
There are marches in most major cities in the morning around 5.30am.
Queen’s birthday
Queen’s Birthday 
Monday of June in most of Australia
The governor in Western Australia proclaims the holiday's date for this state.
New Year’s 
In Sydney, the start of the New Year is 
heralded by a huge fireworks display.
For many people, New Year's Day is a time to 
recover from New Year's Eve parties the 
evening before.
Christmas
In Australia, Christmas comes in the middle of the summer holidays
People also decorate their houses and gardens
“Santa” is called swag man. He is dressed in blue T‐shirt and shorts.

Curiosities
The most important curiosities are:
• Australia is the antipodes of Spain
• The boomerang is an old hunting tool. After throw it, it returns to the 
same place.
• Australia is the biggest island and the smallest continent in the world.
• Australia is the first country to celebrate the New Year.
• Christmas in Australia is in summer.
• Australia is the only country that is also a continent.
Sports
Australia has got a lot of very important teams in 
cricket, hockey and Rugby leagues, there are also 
swimming, rowing and cycling.
Australia was the host in the Olympic games 1956 
and 2000 and  it is within the five countries that has 
won more medals since 2000.
Australia is the only southterm hemisphere country 
that has won a golden medal in the winter olympic 
games.
