Web 2.0 Technology Integration on a Budget
What’s so special about it?
We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist, using technologies that haven't yet been invented , in order to solve problems that we don't even know are problems yet.    --Karl Fisch, "Did You Know?"
web 2.0 Web 2.0 is a two-way medium – a platform upon which content is not only consumed but created ~ Steve Hargadon (A Brave New Classroom)
Characteristics of Web 2.0 Participatory Sharing Facilitating Community Open Communication Freedom to share and Reuse
Advantages to education Promotes Critical Thinking Social Learning Increase Language Skills Modalities and Learning Styles Creativity Students and Teachers Co-Creators
Grandson #1 Deven age 8 Loves to play Roblox ,[object Object]
Has friends online (community)
Visits program creator to ask questions
Gets excited because other kids ask to copy his work.,[object Object]
Deven and Travis Fight constantly – except when they’re playing together online. Deven taught Travis how to read so he could participate with him. Spent the summer building towers, amusement parks and fighting zombies together. ,[object Object]
Travis has better reading skills.
Vocabulary of both boys is above level.,[object Object]
Horizontal Learning Instead of the traditional vertical method of teacher to student, the horizontal learning takes place among teachers and students, students and students, teachers and teachers.
Differentiated Instruction Teaching with student variance in mind (meeting the kids where they are) No standardized approached to learning ( the text as one tool among many in the teacher’s toolbox) Responsive teaching (rather than one-size-fits-all)
A teacher proactively plans varied approaches to what students need to learn, how they will learn it, and/or how they can express what they have learned in order to increase the likelihood that each student will learn as much as he or she can as efficiently as possible. ,[object Object],Differentiated Instruction
Who’s in Your Classroom? Photo from “A Night at the Museum”
They’re all different, so howcan you make it meaningful for all of them?
What are you trying to teach? Goal of the Lesson – what do you want the technology to do for you? What’s the most important concept or skill you want the student to learn?
How will technology contribute to the learning process? If the technology overshadows the purpose or interferes with the process of learning, then it’s best to not use the technology. The technology is only a tool to help a student achieve success and understanding, not the end in itself. Don’t use it if it doesn’t help.

Assessment Strategies
Low cost and/or free technology “Many, many technologies that were previously expensive or unavailable are now becoming free to anyone with a web browser.” ~Thomas Bittman
WYSIWYG *What you see is what you get (**hey, nothing is perfect) (***what do you want for free?)
What will you need? Materials Internet Access, story starters, preparatory work Space Time Equipment Hardware Software Batteries
Where to start Don’t try to do everything at once. Will the application be the lesson or enrichment? How much time will you need?
Allow for things to go wrong Will the school’s filter allow you to go there? Will your students need special permissions? Does your equipment work? Batteries charged? Room on the photo card? Computers online? Does the website still exist? (it happens!)
Be prepared for outcomes When you let kids collaborate, you may get more than you bargained for. Be ready to be a facilitator – guide the students, but don’t take over.
