Title
The Drum Circle
RESEARCH TOPIC
street drumming performance
BACKGROUND
They are a music group showcasing percussions such as djembe, dunun, timbao, shekere, etc.
Based in Kuala Lumpur, they have played various types of rhythms that came from Africa, Brazilian
rhythm to Guinea. They have been performing for events and doing drum circles around Malaysia
since 2011.
One of the way they attract the audience is by welcoming everyone to participate by play,
dance, sing, audience also could just spend their weekend at night by gathering with them to
either watch or be there as one of the group.

3. Project Proposal
 Aims and Objective
 Give people a new experience of playing percussion.
 To make it more fascinating and motivate audience .
 Creates an excitement when they playing the percussion.
MOTIVATION
Not all people have the ability of playing drum and percussions. So this is one of the way i could
think of for everyone to just easily participate freely to produce the sound by step on it and walk
on top of the floor. With the creation of this project, at the same time it could produce a user
interaction with each other like a creation of a group and a teamwork to create nice beats.
IDEATION AND CONCEPT
For the visual, would use a projector to project it on the floor and it will projected the visual of the
interface and when user step on the tiles that tells the name of the drum kit part, it would produce
a sound accordingly thru the position of the feet and their step which will be detected thru a
motion sensor using a kinect .

Why drums?
Drumming is one of the way of helping people to express and address their
emotional related issues. If these negative feelings and emotions are not
being expressed, it would create energy blockages. Drumming can remove
negative feelings and release it through the physical stimulation because the
resonation of sound travel through every cell in our body vibrates, thus
releasing the negative cellular memories.

Drumming has been used for centuries during rituals, ceremonies, for
communication, rites of passage, music and dance, celebration, healing,
community building, and cultural events. Drumming also can be used for the
purpose of healing. A truly holistic healing approach, group drumming breaks
down social barriers, promotes freedom of expression, non-verbal
communication, unity and cooperation. Drumming awakens dormant
emotions and unexplainable feelings of excitement and euphoria. It
decreases depression, anxiety, and stress, strengthens the immune system
and keeps you physically in check.

integration, increased bodily awareness and attention span, and anxiety
reduction
• Communication-- non-verbal and verbal skills, group participation

• The culture of drumming circles allows for shifts in leadership and
following/coordination with others. These provide contexts for adaptive
and generative learning.

THE PIANO STAIRS by volkswagen
Their concept is to encouraging people to take the stairs instead of
the escalator or elevator. This was one of their way to get more
people to take the stairs over the escalator by making it fun.

8. Idea Developement
Interactive Sound Installation Art
The webcam will act with zone trigger software to activate the zone
trigger. There will be 4 webcam in this installation.
1. There will be a Four zone trigger that will be use in this installation.
When the participant step in the first zone trigger, It will trigger the
first sound.
2. When the participant steps in the second zone trigger, it would
trigger the second sound which will be created for the second
circle.
3. The participant will proceed to the third zone trigger , that would
trigger the third sound which will be created for the third circle.
4. And finally the participant will step on the fourth and the circle
that would trigger the final sound clip for that circle.

I have decided to use this software as i also wanted to explore more in depth in the world of
creating electronic music. i could produce my rhythm base and drum base music and sound
design using this software. Reason is an integrated music recording and production studio with
unlimited audio tracks, mixing, and a massive collection of sounds included. Reason comes with all
the instruments, effects and mixing tools you need for writing, recording, remixing and producing
great-sounding tracks.
Adobe Audition
Adobe® Audition® CS6 software. Accomplish more in less time with intuitive editing, sound design,
processing, mixing, and mastering tools, optimized for film, video, and radio workflows.
Audio tool
Audiotool which an apps that is available in google chrome apps which allows you to
create music tracks in the cloud with your favorite gear. Audiotool also features 24/7
Autotool radio with music made in the Audiotools suite.
Record, sample, and collaborate on your own tracks or with friends.

Personal Context
It is related to self-expression, drumming is one of the effective
way to rebuild emotional health, and addresses issues of violence
and conflict through expression and integration of emotions.

The purpose of this project is to expose more about drumming and
the part it plays in human nature, biologically and emotionally.This
project can suggest better alternatives for user to interact just by
walking and step on the circle to produce a different type of
rhythmic base music which each represents the nature of human
emotion/moods.
Each of the rhythmic music user steps represent a different mood.
There will be 4 zone trigger that would be placed around the
circle and each would trigger the rhythmic sound once the user
step on it. Each of the rhythm music that user steps represents a
different human mood
