1. Fuel Economy
-What is the most expensive price you have seen for gas
this year? What is the cheapest?
-What are some of the reasons that fuel prices change
over a year?
1
2. Odometer Readings
The odometer conveys how far a car has travelled
over its lifespan. ex. 57 000km
Example 1: Archie went on a road trip. When he left for the
trip the odometer reading on his car was 89 372km. When he
stopped to fill his car for gas the odometer reading was
89 722km. How far did Archie travel?
2
3. Fuel Economy is expressed as the number of litres
consumed to travel 100km.
-Ex. 14L/100km. This means that a vehicle consumes 14 L
of fuel for every 100km travelled.
Which car has the best fuel
economy:
-Car A: 8L/100km
-Car B: 6.8L/100km
-Car C: 11.5L/100km
3
4. A car with a full tank of gas travelled 572 km before
stopping at a gas station. The car required 41.2L of gas to
fill the tank.
a) Find the fuel economy of the vehicle.
b) Find the cost of fuel for the trip if the cost per litre is
56.3 cents.
a) Fuel Economy = litres x100
kilometers driven
4
5. b) find the cost of fuel for the trip if fuel
costs 56.3 cents per litre. *NOTE* - Cost of
fuel should be expressed in Dollars ($).
Cost = Litres consumed x Price per litre
5
6. *Note*- a car can have different a different fuel
economy at a given time depending on how an individual
drives.
Archie travelled a total of 350km in the city at 10.5L/100km,
and 200km at 7.4L/100km on the highway in one week of
driving. Gasoline costs 62.5 cents per litre.
a) Calculate the number of litres of fuel used
b) Calculate the cost of the fuel.
6
7. Archie travelled a total of 350km in the city at 10.5L/100km,
and 200km at 7.4L/100km on the highway in one week of
driving. Gasoline costs 62.5 cents per litre.
a) Calculate the number of litres of fuel used
Litres needed for city = 10.5L x 350km = 36.75L
100km
Litres needed for the highway = 7.4L x 200km = 14.8L
100km
Total Litres needed = 36.75 + 14.8 = 51.55L
7
8. Archie travelled a total of 350km in the city at 10.5L/100km,
and 200km at 7.4L/100km on the highway in one week of
driving. Gasoline costs 62.5 cents per litre.
b) Calculate the cost of the fuel.
Total cost = litres used x cost of gas/litre
