2. Write an essay.
• It should be within 250 words.
• Give it 40 minutes.
3. Simple rules
❖Make sure your paper is clean .
❖Make your writing clear and neat.
❖If the instruction says write about a number of things
make sure to mention them all . But don’t write the
instructions exactly , paraphrase.
4. 1st task : Report writing
0 The task is to describe a graph in a report .
0 There are ,many types of graphs :
• Single line graph .
• Double line graph.
• Bar graph (single double or triple)
• Pie chart
• Table .
• Process of something .
10. Important rules
1. Remember to write around 150 words and give it only
20 minutes.
2. You shouldn’t write your opinion or copy words from
the graph. Rephrase and use synonyms.
3. Never use bullet points , write as if you are writing an
essay.
4. Follow the structure of Introduction (1 paragraph),
body ( 2 to 3 paragraphs)and conclusion (1 paragraph).
11. How the essay must look
❖Introduction :It should describe the purpose of the report
and what the over all trends are. Your words must draw
the picture imagine explaining it to someone who cant see
it. For example for the pie chart :
The pie chart describes the percentage of
the categories of books which were sold in
2001. There are 8 categories given in the
chart. It can be seen that parenting books
are the most popular category.
How to start ? You start with the ………
shows/reveals/ describes or even
compares.. Depends on the type of graph
12. ❖Body :
It should describe the most important trends, while all other
information is summarized to avoid unnecessary
information. Summarizing doesn’t mean throwing away
information. what is important is to select what is important
and compare it.
You must divide it into 2 paragraphs at least , 1 with the
ones similar to each other in features and the other with the
other category.
❖ Conclusion: It should sum up the important trends and
compare them if possible . Don’t mention your opinion or
something that is not in the graph.
13. Grammar
Actions:
❖Happened in the past. Ex: “books sold in 2012” Use simple
past.
❖Continued in the past. Ex: “the way people were spending
money on appeal between 2009 and 2012” Use past
continuous.
❖Happens in the present. Ex: “unemployment figures among
women” Use present simple or present continuous.
14. Helpful Vocabulary
0 When you describe a graph you need certain vocabulary
like :
• Rises (increase, climbs, goes up)
• Falls ( decrease, drops, goes down, declines)
• Doesn’t change ( remains, at the same level , maintain
stability)
• Slowly ( gradually, steadily)
• For highest you can use popular or common.
15. How to describe
0 Numbers are boring: DON’T just write “went from 100 in 1987 to 150 in
1990” write increased or have risen.
0 Describe each stage one by one when there is a process you can ignore
details. Firstly (secondly, thirdly, finally) or by using (then, after that, in
addition, otherwise, at the same time )
0 You must group the information and use them in categories to make it
easier . Like the highest number were recorded for apples, oranges and
the lowest were for peaches and bananas .
17. Writing task 2
writing an essay
It must have 3 parts :
1. Introduction : 1 paragraph.
2. Body : 2 to 3 paragraphs .
3. Conclusion : 2 paragraph .
Within 250 word not less .
Remember you have 40 minutes to do this !
18. Types of essay :
Argument
1. Topics that presents an Argument we will call it (A)
you need to explore pros and cons of something .
Reasons for or against and you only support one side .
Example: “Modern society benefit greatly from computer
technology. However, becoming more depended on
computers has it’s disadvantages . Describe threats of
computers”
Here there are 2 sides to the argument advantages and
disadvantages to computer .
20. Hidden argument
2. Topics that presents a Hidden argument we call it (H)
these topics usually ask “to what extent ?” “how has
something changed ?” “In what way ?”
Example: “To what extent should television participate in
our children education?”
What they are really asking here is whether television
should educate children or not ?
22. Situation
3. Topics that present a Situation we call it (S) and you
need to explore seasons. Why it is what it is assume what
will happen in the future and even suggest solution to the
problem if there was any !
Example: “Due to change of women's role in society, are
now suffering from sexual discrimination. Do you agree ?”
Here you can see the description of education and write
what you think about it.
