UnitedNations Human Development Programme
Under this programme, United Nations has been working on Human Development on a global
scale via reporting on Human Development Indicators year since 1990s. Since the 1990s most

These reports allow to bring key questions of human significance and monitor the development
programs.
Human Development Indicators
These indicators HDI- are used for measurement of human development in contrast with
economic developments. It can be used to measure how a particular nation is working
specifically for the development of the lives of people. It can be used to study, understand and
evaluate countries of similar economic growth or in a nearby region and their government
policies.
It depicts geometric means of normalized indices of these 3 performance indicators of the
country.
1. Long & Healthy Life
Health and long life is measured with life expectancy at birth.
2. Knowledge
It is assessed with means years of education for adults aged 25 and more, and with
expected years of education for students of primary education age.
3. A decent Standard of Living
Gross National Income per capita is used for measurement. HID utilizes a logarithm to
reflect increasing GNI with diminishing importance of income.
Note: HDI doesnot show corruption, terrorism, poverty, inequality, justice system, human
security, freedom, empowerment or other possibly useful indicators. It depicts basics only.

Pakistani HDI are not bad but not good either. These can improve and growth should be
focused. However, health & life should be primary indicator, the higher it is HDI is also reflected
higher. Education is also lacking. But probably the other political, corruption and terrorism
problems have been affecting our economy and HDI. It’s not a blame game. Its ugly truth. Our
economic indicators and potential for is growth is good from the start. Instability, Leadership
and Global politics have regretfully let other younger nations by pass in HDI too.

is 0.25. Although UAE is way ahead Pakistan in most segments of HDI. Plus, UAE has more
carbon emissions per capita; approximately 18 times. But Pakistan is has huge population and
no oil reserves but more political and other issues. Although UAE is younger than Pakistan but it
had oil that got the British and world attention.
