Project Overview
Trans Studio is the world's 3rd largest indoor theme park located in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The 20,000 m2
wide and 20 meters high indoor theme park opened to the public September 9, 2009.
Following the success of Trans Studio, a science center is being planned to open in Bandung, Indonesia. The planned
science center to be called “Trans Studio Science Center”.
The Trans Studio Science Center to be 1330 m2 (14,330 sq. ft.). The Trans Studio Science Center is to be of high design
and high interactivity, similar in modality to the Singapore Science Center.
The Science Center is to be designed and fabricated locally whenever possible with specialty pieces being purchased when
necessary.

Content
Trans Studio Science Center, Mission Statement
The mission of the Trans Studio Science Center is to educate and excite
visitors about science. The Science Center will spark interest in science
through fun interactive exhibits.
Layers of Content
We all learn from simple to complex, groupings of simple concepts build
to form complex ideas. The science center will follow the same model of
“easy access”, exhibits and content will be welcoming and easily
accessible. As visitors travel through the Trans Studio Science Center,
the simple concepts will build to of complex ideas.
Tech Tag
Every visitor will have a personalized experience through the science
center. The visitor’s entrance ticket will serve as their “passport” to a
personalized experience. Visitors can compare their performance to their
friends. At the end of the experience visitors can take home a print out
of their “Trans Studio Passport”

Exhibition Filters
Exhibition Filters
An exhibition filter is a guiding principle by which exhibits are chosen or rejected. The filters become a criteria by which the exhibits
are judged to be included as part of the overall exhibition.
Trans Studio Science Center, Exhibition Filters:
• Real Science
• Interactive
• A clean, modern aesthetic
• Exhibits will be Hands On, Body On and Minds On
• The exhibits will be a mixture of modality, fine motor and gross motor skills
• Exhibits will be discovery based vs. didactic
• Wherever possible exhibits will be open ended with multiple outcomes
• The voice of the Science Center will be and accepting and welcoming
• Exhibits will incorporate the real material of the topic
• Making the real magical vs making the real world magic
• The exhibits will be Immediate and unambiguous
• Exhibits will be grouped by topic, with connections between disciplines
• Sight lines between disciplines will be orchestrated
• Exhibits will be a mixture of group and solo activities
• Exhibits will be welcoming
• The entry exhibits will be comprised of “Safe or dangerous” exhibits, they may look dangerous, but are safe and fun
• Exhibits and environments will be built with exposed fasteners and connections, reinforcing the idea of revealing the nature of things

9. Project Overview
Umbrella Concept - Revealing the Invisible
Umbrella Concept - Revealing the Invisible
Visitors will expose the hidden world of science. Through
the tools of science; the secrets of atoms, optical illusions,
black holes, microscopic bugs and light will be exposed to
the visitor. Visitors will accomplish feats they never
thought possible ! Lift a safe, lay on a bed of nails and
defy gravity.
Look through a microscope and see a carving in the eye
of a needle, watch a movie and gain an understanding of
the magnitude of the universe. The secrets of “Revealing
the Invisible”, will be exposed through a treasure hunt, the
“secrets of science hunt.”

16. Safe or Dangerous
Safe or Dangerous
Many surveys of visitors to Science Centers have shown
that visitors are intimidated by science. Often surveys
come back with comments such as “I am no good at
science”, “I am scared of science”, “I am afraid I may give
the wrong answer”. With these comments in mind we
have created the Safe Danger Zone. Here visitors can
build trust and confidence. It may look scary, but try it
and you will have fun!
Yes, a Bed of Nails, looks scary, but try it, no it doesn’t
hurt and through the experience you will learn why you
don’t get hurt.

Scientists are people too. Meet a scientist, talk to a
scientist, do an experiment with a scientist, they are regular
people, just like you and me.
The “Discovery Science Zone”, is a laboratory where visitors
get to “hang out” with a scientist. Hourly demonstrations,
give a preview of the experiments that can be performed by
visitors. The space is divided into lab zones, the
microscope lab, the demonstration area, the art lab and the
physics lab. In each area, scientists staff laboratories for
visitors to perform their own experiments.

64. Lenses bend light. The ten small slits in the
drum create ten beams of white light. Put the
convex lens near the drum so that several
beams of light shine out through the curved
side. The convex lens bends the light to bring
the beams together.
Replace the convex lens with the concave
lens making sure that the light shines out
through the curved side of the lens. The
concave lens makes the beams spread out
Use the curved mirrors to reflect several
beams of the white light. A Mirror curved one
way brings the reflected beams together.
acting like a convex lens. A mirror curved the
other way spreads the beams apart acting like
a concave lens.
Colored filters block some colors of light. Put
a filter in front of the red, blue and green
lights to see what colors pase through the
colored plastic. Notice what colors are
blocked
Stand a flat mirror in the beam of red light.
Move the mirror around ;until you reflect the
red light onto the white screen below the
sign. Use another mirror to overlap green
light with the red light on the screen. Notice
that the colors combine to make yellow.
Use the mirrors to mix blue light with red
light. Try combining blue and green. What
happens if you mix all three colors.
Make colored shadows by putting your
finger several inches in front of the screen
where two or more colors overlap.
Prisms separate colors that make up white
light Slowly rotate a pism in the path of a
single beam of white light until you see
rainbow colors fan out across the table.
