31. Customer Question Answer
We need enterprise-ready storage solution that is
strongly consistent.
Azure Storage is enterprise-ready, strongly consistent, highly available, and scalable. AWS is not strongly
consistent but only eventually consistent.
We need a 1st party solution for hybrid cloud storage.
Azure Storage is integrated with 1st party hybrid solution from StorSimple. AWS does not have a 1st party
hybrid solution.
How can we be sure our data is safe in case of an
unexpected event?
Azure Storage is integrated with Azure Site Recovery, Backup, and DPM. AWS does not have a 1st party DR
solution.
AWS is less expensive.
Azure Premium Storage offers 30% higher IOPS than AWS for same price. EBS offers 30% less IOPS than
Premium Storage for same price.
We need robust durability. Azure Premium Storage has 3 replicas and is highly durable. EBS offers 2 replicas and lower durability.
Do we have to change application code for our files?
No, Azure Files supports SMB 3.0, which is widely used in Windows Server and also supported on Linux.
EFS only supports NFS, which is mostly supported on Linux.
Are storage services available in our region? Azure Files available in all Azure Regions. EFS is in preview and is available only in one region.

Speaker Notes:
Today we would like to have a conversation around your strategy for data storage and management.
Why this Slide:
It shows we have a very broad platform. It about BOTH IaaS and PaaS, that these work together. It shows that we continue to lead in world class IT capabilities and that there’s really nothing missing.
Key Points:
We have already seen how the Azure Platform is IaaS + Pass – but I want you to understand that this is a huge number of capabilities – IT building blocks if you will.
Every one of these blocks you provision anytime, self-service anywhere in the world 24x7. You pay for what you use, you can get more or less anytime and you can fully automate everything…
DON’T spent too much time on this slide – you are going to DEMO (aren’t you!!!)… DON’T go through each block…
Transition to NEXT Slide: Make the build go backwards to show JUST IaaS and then you will go to the demo to show it.
Mission Critical attributes – Scalable , highly available ( resilience ,fault tolerance ) , performance
Talking points for each competitive positioning pillar:
1. Hybrid IT: Microsoft provides consistent platform across traditional, private and public cloud with a common set of technologies that enable customers to build and deploy across these environments with common skills and technologies
[AWS is only focused on providing services in public cloud they lack the traditional on-premises and private cloud environment. AWS recently announced partnership with a startup called Eucalyptus that provide private cloud environment that’s compatible with AWS APIs. In reality, it means AWS has just provided the Eucalyptus license to their API and may provide some technical support. AWS and Eucalyptus are not working jointly to innovate the private cloud offering or to build new technology that offers compatibility of broader AWS services with Eucalyptus. This is not an exclusive partnership with Eucalyptus. Eucalyptus in turn is facing fierce competition from open stack; it does not run on Windows and support Hyper-V]
Common Virtualization - Move Virtual Machines easily between your datacenter, a third-party hoster, or Windows Azure - Windows Azure (IaaS) supports the standard VHD format allowing you to move your VMs “as-is” back and forth between on-premises and the Cloud or a 3rd party hoster. We’re committed to interoperability through Open Specification Promise that covers the VHD format. [Competitors like AWS lock you in by converting VMs into proprietary AMI format and making it hard to move back to on-premises]
Common Management – System Center 2012 allows managing both private and public clouds from one console.[AWS has limited integration with the on-premises management tool suite and has very weak asset management capabilities]
Rich Cross-premises network connectivity : We have a comprehensive cross-premises connectivity stack, from Database (DB Sync) to App to App (ServiceBus) to IP-level connectivity (Azure Connect for machine-to-machine connectivity and Virtual Network for site-to-site connectivity). AWS only provides site-to-site connectivity through VPC (network level connectivity only)
2. Flexible App Model
Quickly build apps by combining Virtual Machines (IaaS), Cloud Services and Web Sites (PaaS) - We have architected our IaaS in a way that gives customers the ability to mix and match VMs (IaaS), with cloud services and web Sites (PaaS) to quickly develop apps while leveraging all of the platform goodness (all of the services, language support and tooling) – ‘mixed mode’ apps. [This differentiates us from competitors like AWS who primarily provide an IaaS offering.]
AWS pseudo pass offering Beanstalk is still in Beta , you can not place Beanstalk app on a VPC, available in limited regions, AWS has not made major innovation in this area expected they added support for additional languages like .NET , PHP.
Extend the power of Virtual Machines with services like application messaging, caching and storage – With VMs, you can build powerful apps by using ‘out-of-box’ services like Service Bus (and its relay feature), Caching and SQL DB.
Build and deploy apps in Virtual Machines with languages, Operating Systems and deployment tools of your choice
3. Enterprise Ready – Core Platform
With Azure its easy to build mission critical applications [highly scalable , highly available and performance] –
Virtual Machines built on a durable storage system that automatically replicates within datacenters and across geographies - Persistence in the VMs automatically leverages the durability of the Windows Azure storage system (we provide equivalent redundancy of three replicas and additionally replicate data across datacenters that are 100’s miles apart). [With AWS, customers have to remember to take snapshots of EBS and put them in S3. Even then, S3 is replicated in the same physical location]
Easily build highly available apps by placing Virtual Machines in ‘availability sets’ - We make it easier to build highly available apps with VMs as well, just adding VMs into an ‘availability set’ takes care of it. [With AWS, you have to place instances in separate availability regions, and place a load balancer in front of them].
Free load balancing - Load balancing is easy to set up and free on Azure. (With AWS, you’re charged for using their elastic loadbalancer)
Single instance SLA of 99.9%, Multiple SLA of 99.95% - Windows Azure plans to provide single instance SLA of 99.9% (in addition to SLA of 99.95% for multiple instances ). AWS EC2 provides SLAs for multiple instances only.
4. Trusted partner: We know transformation to the Cloud can be risky. From procurement to getting support, you’re in trusted hands with Microsoft.
Existing trusted relationships: Leverage current relationships with Microsoft for world class support (account managers) [ AWS is still learning how to sell to enterprise, enterprise sales team is not available in every state in US ]
Multiple procurement options: In addition to consumption based model, Windows Azure is well integrated with regular procurement channel – Enterprise Agreements, so enterprises don’t have to negotiate a new agreement. Negotiating EA with AWS can be challenging (per Gartner report: it can take 6-12 months to negotiate a customer agreement with AWS).
Release cycle: Organizations prefer predictable life cycles. Windows Azure has 6-month cadence (Fall, Spring). AWS makes multiple announcements per week drowning customers in news.
With Microsoft customers leverage the existing support channels like Premier services . Microsoft provide single point of support for the Microsoft applications like SQL Server and SharePoint deployed on Windows Azure
Customers can leverage large ecosystem of Microsoft partners and developers who offer various services such as consulting , products that integrate with Windows Azure example CommVault and StorSimple Storage appliances , ISVs offering services on top of windows azure. [AWS often develop services that partner offer example of this AWS storage gateway that tick off their partners ]
Speaker Notes:
As enterprises rapidly increase their investment in cloud technologies, data storage and management is more important than ever.
Adoption of cloud services worldwide continues to accelerate and CIOs consider cloud-based delivery the preferred choice when implementing new services. (IDC) It’s estimated that enterprises with over 1,000 employees will increase their cloud spending by 52%. (Computerworld Forecast)
The portion of this spend for storage is growing at one of the fastest rates, given the rapid acceleration of data that enterprises must manage and the ever-increasing need to find new 'homes' for this data – in fact, spending on storage management will grow by 40% this year. (Forrester)

Speaker Notes:
Storage is a critical factor that can determine how well an enterprise is able to take advantage the benefits of cloud computing – including speed and time to market, agility, scale, and economic benefits. Organizations face these challenges related to data storage and management:
Capacity Charges: As storage costs keep increasing due to unending capacity purchases, budget is a key challenge for organizations.
Backup & Disaster Recovery: As data volumes grow, it’s more difficult backup data and recover it in the event of a unexpected event.
Unmanageable complexity: Rapid growth of data causes storage sprawl that is difficult manage, pushing current infrastructure to its limits.
Limited IT agility: Without room for data, IT is not agile enough to support new workloads or respond to evolving business needs.
Speaker Notes:
Azure Storage is reliable, economical cloud storage for data big and small. Cloud computing enables new scenarios for applications requiring scalable, durable, and highly available storage for their data – which is exactly why Microsoft developed Azure Storage.
Key benefits of Azure Storage include:
Highly scalable cloud storage with built-in security, durability, and reliability
Manage petabytes of data
Fastest performance in the industry (according to Nasuni 2015 State of Cloud Storage Report)
Geo-redundant and available to 99.99%
Security, privacy, transparency, and disaster recovery
Developer-friendly experience with Restful APIs, libraries for .NET, Java, and other open source technologies
Azure Storage Services: Azure Storage consists of following services:
1. Blobs, 2. Disks (premium and std disks for VMs), 3. Files, 4. Tables, 5. Queues
Azure Import/Export: Ship data in hard disk drives through FedEx to our data centersAZCopy: Command-line utility for high-performance uploading, downloading, and copying data to and from Microsoft Azure Blob, File, and Table storage
Speaker Notes:
Gartner research recently published their Magic Quadrant for Public Cloud Storage Services and recognized Microsoft Azure as a leader for the second year in a row based on completeness of our vision and ability to execute. This comes at the heel of recent independent research report by Nasuni where Azure Storage is recognized as the best performer in benchmark tests. Gartner’s report further substantiates Microsoft’s position as the only vendor named a leader across Gartner Magic Quadrants for IaaS, Application PaaS, and Cloud Storage.
Speaker Notes:
Let’s talk about the top use cases for Azure Storage:
Backup and Disaster Recovery: Easily backup VMs and data on Azure Storage and orchestrate recovery
Hybrid Cloud Storage with StorSimple: Use a tiered, limitless storage solution spanning on-premises to cloud
Enterprise Applications using Premium Storage: Seamlessly run high performance on-premises workloads on Azure
Managed Cloud File Share: Reduce costs by moving File Server and Share to the Cloud
Modern Born-in-the-Cloud Applications: Build modern applications with hyper-scale needs using Azure Storage
Big Data & Analytics: Gain actionable insight based on your data in Azure Storage
Speaker Notes:
Gain credibility with customers explaining back up is about protection of workload and data; DR is about how quickly they can be back in business if disaster strikes their data center
Start with understanding what %age of mission critical and non-mission critical workloads have back up and DR; we hear around 25-30% are mission critical and have back-up and DR soln; the non-mission critical workloads are not backed up with DR solution because of
Share Microsoft solution for back up and DR via ASR, Backup. Most of customers who have SC 2012 or WS 2012 can buy OMS suite add-on and get ASR and Backup as part of it. They still pay for Azure Storage cost for workload and data stored on Azure.
Customers can have back-up and DR solution from a single vendor. Also ASR helps customers get back in business within mins.

Speaker Notes:
In today’s world, enterprises are gathering massive amounts of data on their business and their customers. To make critical business decisions, enterprises need to look at the their historical data retrospectively, their real-time to perform analytics, and both past and real-time data to predict what could occur in the future. And enterprises may also want to build each of these data categories into intelligent Saas applications. To achieve this, an organization must ingest a large amount of data, process it, and then pull it out somewhere into a usable format. This requires storage management with limitless scale.
Azure Storage helps you address your Big Data & Analytics needs:
Massive amount of data produced that can only be shared in cloud and not in on prem DCs.
Azure Storage is best place as it is integrated with other Microsoft products such as HDInsight, stream analytics, data lake.
