What is Green Concrete?
• Green Concrete is environmentally friendly concrete
• Concrete that uses less in energy in its production and produces less
carbon dioxide than normal concrete is green concrete
NEED OF GREEN CONCRETE
• The main ingredient in concrete is cement and it consists of lime stone
• During manufacture of cement its ingredients
are heated to about 800 c-10000c
• During this process carbon dioxide is released
• Approximately 1 kg of concrete releases
about 900 gms of carbon dioxide in to the atmosphere
• Therefore green concrete came in to existence to reduce the emission
of carbon dioxide
TECHNIQUE
It should follow the technique of reduce-reuse-recycle
 Reduce the green house gas emission
 Reduce the use of natural resources such as limestone , shale , clay and
natural river sand
 Use of waste materials
OBJECTIVE
 The main objective is sustainable development without destruction of
natural resources
REQUIREMENTS OF GREEN CONCRETE
• The concrete should have the following requirements to say it as a
“GREEN CONCRETE”
Optimizes use of available materials
Better performance
Enhanced cohesion workability/consistency
Reduced shrinkage and creep
Durability-better service life of concrete
Reduced carbon foot print
No increase in cost
LEED certification
MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONCRTE
The materials which are preferable to use in the Green Concrete are
 Locally available
 Salvaged , refurnished or remanufactured
 Reusable or recyclable
MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONCRETE
• Coarse aggregates are

CEMENTIOUS MATERIALS
• FLY ASH
fly ash is a byproduct produced during the operation of
coal fired plants. The finely divided particles from the exhaust gases are
collected in the electro static precipators. These particles are called fly ash
Utilization of fly ash as a part replacement
of cement or mineral admixture in concrete
saves on cement and hence the emission of
carbon dioxide
ADVANTAGES OF FLYASH
I. Use of good quality fly ash in concrete has shown remarkable
improvement in durability of concrete ,especially in aggressive
environment
II. Higher ultimate strength
III. Increased durability
IV. Improved workability
V. Reduced bleeding
VI. Reduced shrinkage
VII.Increased resistance to alkali - silica reactivity
MIX DESIGN
• The concrete mix design method for such concrete
is the same as for conventional concrete. However,
the constituent materials shown in figure
must pack themselves in such a manner that they
occupy minimum volume or give minimum voids in
concrete.
In figure all individual material has large voids. For getting a dense or
impervious green concrete, all such voids must be packed with smaller
particles of next type of material.
SUITABILITY OF GREEN CONCRETE IN STRUCTURES
The factors which enhance the suitability of green concrete in structures
 Reduce the dead weight of the structure
Good thermal and fire resistance sound insulation than the traditional
granite rock
Reduction of concrete industry’s carbon dioxide emission by 30%
Increased concrete industry’s use of waste products by 20%
No environmental pollution and sustainable development
Green concrete requires less maintenance and repairs
APPLICATIONS OF GREEN CONCRETE
ADVANTAGES
• Reduction in creep and shrinkage
• It uses the local and recycled materials in concrete
• The heat of hydration of green concrete is significantly lower than the
traditional concrete
• Compressive strength and flexural behavior is fairly equal to that of
conventional concrete
• Since these are optimized mix designs it is easier to handling
SCOPE IN INDIA
• Green concrete is a revolutionary topic in the history of India
• As green concrete is made with industrial wastes it does take less time
to come to India since industries are having the problem with waste
disposal
• Also reducing the impact on environment

  • 10. CEMENTIOUS MATERIALS • FLY ASH fly ash is a byproduct produced during the operation of coal fired plants. The finely divided particles from the exhaust gases are collected in the electro static precipators. These particles are called fly ash Utilization of fly ash as a part replacement of cement or mineral admixture in concrete saves on cement and hence the emission of carbon dioxide
