Every Java developer knows that multithreading is the root of all evil and it is quite hard to write correct code for concurrent environment. But what tasks do exist in real commercial development except running code in asynchronous way? In this talk I will present several tasks from my real projects and solutions we designed for them. This talk is very application oriented and allows participants to extend their vision of concurrent programming.

In this talk I will present an overview of what is disaster recovery, its main organizational and technical aspects and how we solved the problem of DR for many companies using a combination of OpenNebula, MooseFS and lots of duct tape. Going in detail, the presentation will show how to realistically estimate your recovery time objective (RTO) and the other essential parameters like RPO depending on your company structure and requirements; how to create a reliable, self-managing infrastructure using OpenNebuia and the MooseFS/LizardFS distributed filesystems, how to efficiently perform geographic disaster recovery (including differential and deduplicating snapshots) and the additions and changes we made to OpenNebula to help in performing remote management and support. Some specific real-life disasters will be examined, along with some hardware tools designed to help – like the portable cloud or the bomb-proof server rack.

You have just spent 3 hours fixing the up monitoring of the multiport memory on the 11/780s making that the last node of the Vax beowulf cluster when the boss comes blustering in with his usual nonsense. "The mail is not working" he blurts out as if you would be interested. "Well what did I tell you" you retort slyly "thats what happens when you buy /windows servers/." As you crawl out from the service hatch, to see what the boss is on about, you notice a faint burning smell and, to your great satisfaction, that the annoying blinking red error light has finally stopped on the exchange server... Maybe, just maybe you think it is time to change all this? This workshop will give you a hands-on introduction on how to use NSClient++ to monitor your windows servers from Nagios (or whatever monitoring solution you prefer). We will start off by installing NSClient++ so the only prerequisite is a w32-based laptop (or quite possibly a virtual machine running on your local beowulf cluster). After installing NSClient++ we will learn how to use it to monitor some common things via NRPE (and if there is interest NSCA). I will also go over the security implications to using NSClient++ and what you can do to keep your windows machines secure.

While probably the most prominent, Docker is not the only tool for building and managing containers. Originally meant to be a "chroot on steroids" to help debug systemd, systemd-nspawn provides a fairly uncomplicated approach to work with containers. Being part of systemd, it is available on most recent distributions out-of-the-box and requires no additional dependencies. This deck will introduce a few concepts involved in containers and will guide you through the steps of building a container from scratch. The payload will be a simple service, which will be automatically activated by systemd when the first request arrives.

See: http://www.oop-konferenz.de/oop2017/konferenz/konferenzprogramm/sessiondetails/action/detail/session/do-54/title/containerized-end-2-end-testing-automate-it.html Setting up unit- and integration tests are tasks which developers have learned to deal. But testing UIs from the perspective of an end user is mostly still a challenge. The key question usually to answer is: How it is possible to make these end-2-end tests stable, scalable and reproducible? The upcoming container technologies bring the hope of managing and automating your UI tests as easily as your container deployment. A live demo will show how it is possible to test and monitor a web- or a rich-client application in a containerized Linux UI. Target Audience: Architects, Developers, Tester, DevOps, Monitoring Teams Prerequisites: none Level: Practicing Extended Abstract The end-2-end test example will be demonstrated by the open source tools "Docker" and "Sakuli". The demo shows how to do a blackbox UI test of a complex application, which is build on purpose of the current microservice pattern. The results will be interpreted and visualized in the Jenkins CI build pipeline and we will take a look into the UI activity of the testing container during the test execution. In an alternative scenario the previous build end-2-end tests will be executed with the objective to forward there results to a monitoring system like OMD Nagios. This use case makes it possible to continuously measure the runtime of different test execution steps and create alerts on broken thresholds. This approach enables a new perspective of monitoring. It is now possible to check constantly if the functionality of an application, like the user login or the search engine is up and running - not just the sever healthy state.

Continuous Integration, with Apache Continuum or Jenkins, can be extended to fully manage deployments and production environments, running in Tomcat for instance, in a full Continuous Delivery cycle using infrastructure-as-code tools like Puppet, allowing to manage multiple servers and their configurations. Puppet is an infrastructure-as-code tool that allows easy and automated provisioning of servers, defining the packages, configuration, services,... in code. Enabling DevOps culture, tools like Puppet help drive Agile development all the way to operations and systems administration, and along with continuous integration tools like Apache Continuum or Jenkins, it is a key piece to accomplish repeatability and continuous delivery, automating the operations side during development, QA or production, and enabling testing of systems configuration. Traditionally a field for system administrators, Puppet can empower developers, allowing both to collaborate coding the infrastructure needed for their developments, whether it runs in hardware, virtual machines or cloud. Developers and sysadmins can define what JDK version must be installed, application server, version, configuration files, war and jar files,... and easily make changes that propagate across all nodes. Using Vagrant, a command line automation layer for VirtualBox, they can also spin off virtual machines in their local box, easily from scratch with the same configuration as production servers, do development or testing and tear them down afterwards. We will show how to install and manage Puppet nodes with JDK, multiple Tomcat instances with installed web applications, database, configuration files and all the supporting services. Including getting up and running with Vagrant and VirtualBox for quickstart and Puppet experiments, as well as setting up automated testing of the Puppet code.

Micronaut is a modern, JVM-based, full stack Micro Services framework designed for building modular, easily testable Micro Service applications. Particle is developed by the creators of Grails and takes inspiration from lessons learnt over the years building real-world applications from monoliths to Micro Services using Spring, Spring Boot and Grails. This session covers the current features of Micronaut for building microservices, such as: Dependency Injection and Inversion of Control (IoC). Configuration system. HTTP services. Cloud and serverless deployments. Management & Monitoring.

During past years, the requirements for modern applications have increased from gigabytes of data to terabytes, from thousands of requests per second to millions, from seconds of response time to milliseconds, and this list can be continued. Until now, most of these problems have been solved using the Microservices architecture, but what's next? What next approach should we apply where Microservices fail? In this presentation, we will overview modern approaches to application development with Reactive and Distributed architecture and see how Vert.x help to implement such solutions.

Many developers are in need of complex test environments for different projects with customers. The ideal situation would be to have them running in a sandbox. With help of Vagrant and the vagrant-binding API it's possible to create VM based sandbox-environments "on the fly". Anytime, anywhere and above all reproducible. The Talk shows how fast you can create and configure a sandbox with the help of Vagrant and vagrant-binding even from within the Java runtime. Based on this different solutions for problems in QA and UnitTesting will be shown.

The microservices honeymoon is over. When starting a new project or revamping a legacy monolith, teams started looking for alternatives to microservices. The Modular Monolith, or 'Modulith', is an architecture that reaps the benefits of (vertical) functional decoupling without the high costs associated with separate deployments. This talk will delve into the advantages and challenges of this progressive architecture, beginning with exploring the concept of a 'module', its internal structure, public API, and inter-module communication patterns. Supported by spring-modulith, the talk provides practical guidance on addressing the main challenges of a Modultith Architecture: finding and guarding module boundaries, data decoupling, and integration module-testing. You should not miss this talk if you are a software architect or tech lead seeking practical, scalable solutions. About the author With two decades of experience, Victor is a Java Champion working as a trainer for top companies in Europe. Five thousands developers in 120 companies attended his workshops, so he gets to debate every week the challenges that various projects struggle with. In return, Victor summarizes key points from these workshops in conference talks and online meetups for the European Software Crafters, the world’s largest developer community around architecture, refactoring, and testing. Dubai, often portrayed as a shimmering oasis in the desert, faces its own set of challenges, including the occasional threat of flooding. Despite its reputation for opulence and modernity, the emirate is not immune to the forces of nature. In recent years, Dubai has experienced sporadic but significant floods, testing the resilience of its infrastructure and communities. Among the critical lifelines in this bustling metropolis is the Dubai International Airport, a bustling hub that connects the city to the world. This article explores the intersection of Dubai flood events and the resilience demonstrated by the Dubai International Airport in the face of such challenges.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. The action of the next cyber saga takes place in the mystical lands of the Asia-Pacific region, where the main characters began their digital activities in the middle of 2021 and qualitatively strengthened it in 2022. Corporate espionage, document theft, audio recordings, and data leaks from messaging platforms were all a matter of one day for Dark Pink. Their geographical focus may have started in the Asia-Pacific region, but their ambitions knew no bounds, targeting a European government ministry in a bold move to expand their portfolio. Their victim profile was as diverse as a UN meeting, targeting military organizations, government agencies, and even a religious organization. Because discrimination is not a fashionable agenda. In the world of cybercrime, they serve as a reminder that sometimes the most serious threats come in the most unassuming packages with a pink bow.
