This document provides summaries of 5 architectural projects:
1) Ballyglunin Art Gallery in Ireland which uses hempcrete for sustainable construction.
2) Design School in the UK modeled in BIM.
3) Cerrito de la Virgen Community Centre in Peru consisting of two concrete buildings and an outdoor space.
4) Galway Docks Mixed-Use Building in Ireland with apartments, offices, restaurants, and a parking garage.

There is growing concern about the impact of human
activity on the Earth’s resources. Utilising resources in
a sustainable manner is a challenge; it involves con-
sidering every point of their life-cycle, avoiding over-
exploitation and reducing the environmental and so-
cial impact of their use. Some renewable building ma-
terials can provide simple solutions. For example,
hemp and lime “hempcrete” is a material that produc-
es Zero Carbon Buildings and has excellent insulation
and air-tightness qualities.
The dissertation “Hempcrete: a viable building materi-
al for use in the construction industry in Ireland",
analyses the advantages and disadvantages of hemp-
crete and the growing use of this product in the coun-
try, taking as a case study Ballyglunin Art Gallery.
This project involves the restoration, extension and
changing of the use of a goods shed to an art gallery
with three art studios at Ballyglunin Railway Sta-
tion, Co. Galway. The building is designed to meet the
requirements of TGDs Building Regulations for pub-
lic buildings with protected structures. The proposed
extension building is a timber frame covered with
hempcrete. The drawings and virtual model are pro-
duced using Autodesk Revit 2013.

Hemp-Lime “Hempcrete”
Hempcrete is a renewable material composed by the mixture of the
woody core of the hemp plant, also known as ‘hurd’ or ‘shiv’ and a
lime based binder with the addition of water.
Hempcrete is rigid lightweight material that is infill cast or sprayed
around a timber framework for walls, roof and floors.
Hempcrete creates a breathable building fabric as it allows moisture-
laden air to pass through the structure, while maintaining thermal
properties that insulation and durability.

compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs”. The World Commission on Environment and De-
velopment (WCED)

22nd September Sun Path & Shadow Study
21st March Sun Path & Shadow Study
21st December Sun Path & Shadow Study
21st June Sun Path & Shadow Study
This study using Autodesk Revit shows the sun path and shadows of the
building and vegetation surrounding the site at 12.00 pm in the four
seasons of the year. The drawings show the impact of the new exten-
sion over the existing context: the highest sun altitude on 21st June
with the longest daylight and least shadow projection; the lowest sun
altitude on 21st December with the shortest daylight and greatest
shadow projection. However, the building extension is designed to be
lower than the existing building, minimising its shadow projection over
the existing building.

Design School Loughborough
Four Year | BIM Project
Location: Loughborough University, Leicestershire, UK
BSc. (Hons) in Architectural
Technology final project in BIM
was designed to bring together
the skills and techniques required
to produce documentation and a
virtual model for a significant
project.
The three-storey building chosen
by A. Navarro was the Design
School, Loughborough, UK. It has
been drawn with Autodesk Revit
2013 using PDF plans, with sec-
tions and elevations obtained
from the web. Some changes in
the design and material used in
the original building were made
by the author, who produced a
video which showed different ren-
der views and walk-through the
building.

Cerrito de la Virgen
Community Centre
Volunteer Work | Peru
Location: Huanchaco, Trujillo, Peru.
Community Centre of Cerrito de la Virgen project
aims to build a public community centre in which
there will be all kinds of workshops and activities
with the aim of empowering the community through
the arts and culture, education and capacity-
building, and also through the promotion of active
participation and involvement in community life.
The project has a total site of 826m² and consists
of two in-situ reinforced concrete structure with
hallow concrete block walls buildings separated by
an outdoor patio. The first structure is a two storey
building with 212m² floor area, it has an entrance
hall, two workshop rooms and a toilet at the
ground floor; at the first floor there are a classroom
with a toilet, an office and a living space for volun-
teers with two ensuite bedrooms, a twin room, a
kitchen and a living area. A second building was
designed to accommodate the 216 m² auditorium
with 42m² stage, 105 seats, gens and ladies toilets
and a store. The outdoor patio has a combined bas-
ketball and football court and a skate ramp.

Galway Docks Mixed-Use Building
Third Year | Design & Details Studies Project
Location: Galway, Ireland
BSc. Degree in Architectural Technology third year final
project went through the technical and regulatory
knowledge needed to design a concrete structure con-
struction building. This five storey mixed-use building
consisted of a car park basement; a library with offices, a
restaurant and a bar at ground and first floor; and eight
residential apartment on each of the three upper floors.
The structure combine pre-cast concrete beams, col-
umns, twin walls and stairs with in-situ concrete central
cores and basement walls.
During the design process environmental factors were
considered and mixed-use were taken in account to sat-
isfy the TDGs Building Regulation and Local Planning Leg-
islation. Drawings produced using Autodesk AutoCAD and
Revit Architecture.

Youl Hwa Dang Publishing House
Second Year | Design Studies Project
Location: Paju Book City, Korea
BSc. Degree in Architectural Technology second
year final project went through the regulatory
knowledge needed to design a steel structure
construction building. This is a four storey office
building with canteen. The structure combine
steel beams, columns, slimfloor system with
in-situ concrete cores to locate two stairs and a
lift. The building fabric is a combination of al-
uminium rainscreen façade system with curtain
wall system
All the project was designed in account the TDGs
Building Regulation, Building British Standards
and Local Planning Legislation.
Drawings produced using Autodesk AutoCAD.
