A change in schools led to new
friends, new ways of learning,
and a new outlook on life.
Change
 Move from Montessori to a traditional school
 New environment
 New classmates
Montessori Classroom
 Very Relaxed
 Worked independently or in small groups
 Learned through hands-on work
 Moved freely throughout classroom
 Small school = close friendships with all
Traditional Classroom
 Very structured
 Unfamiliar routine
 Unprepared
 No friends
Academic Struggles
 Lecture format instead of hands-on learning
 Memorizing
 little experience with tests and homework
Social Struggles
 Classmates knew each other since 1st grade.
 Friends got together in small, closed groups at recess
and lunch.
 They didn’t seem to want or need a new girl.
 I felt awkward and alone.
Acceptance
I realized that the situation was different,
and it called for me to act differently too.
Learning to Adapt
 Asked the teachers for help.
 Observed what worked for others
-in the classroom
-in how they interacted with each other
 Slowly acquired friends.
Lessons Learned
 All schools are not equal; that doesn’t make them bad,
only different.
 Adjustment takes time and effort.
 Change can be good or bad; its how we deal with it
that matters.
