- In Canada, even someone doesn’t have money or proof of insurance, you cannot be turned away from a hospital if you require medically necessary treatment. Not so in other countries…foreign hospitals and clinics have been known to refuse treatment to patients who lack adequate insurance or the financial resources to pay their bills. A single accident or major illness could result in years of debt for you or your family if you aren’t carrying adequate insurance in your travels abroad.

- Make sure you’re protected by comprehensive emergency healthcare and security coverage
- Provincial healthcare insurance – covers only up to $400/day, leaving a great deal of room for out-of-pocket expenses and potential debt; Private Group employees benefits plans – usually are co-payment plans or have deductibles, meaning that you are expected to share expenses with the insurance company. They may also have lower limits and require that you have some sort of provincial health insurance plan in place in order to be eligible. Now this isn’t usually an issue for most Canadians, but the implication is that if you are sick or injured, the aim is often to bring you home to have your provincial health insurance plan cover the costs of, say, mending a broken arm; Traditional travel insurance generally has the same GHIP requirements as group plans;
- Very limited coverage – up to a maximum of $400/day for inpatient treatment; much less for outpatient A single accident could put you in debt for years
- -Time-restricted coverage; e.g. only covers for emergency services needed within 90 days of departure -Limited coverage -GHIP requirement means that in the event of a major illness or accident (even for something like a broken limb) you could be sent home to let your GHIP plan take care of the ongoing costs
