After this semester I feel that I've not only developed into a better writer but also have grasped a
better understanding of the writing process, which is arguably most important; having a solid
foundation for my writing technique is the key to writing well. Throughout middle school and high
school, I have always been told to use the "five paragraph format" when writing essays, but now that
I'm in college, I understand that I have been limiting my creativity and not expressing my
opinions and ideas to their fullest extent. To be a good writer, I must put time and effort into my
topic and fully understand the main idea to write a satisfactory essay. So far, I feel as if I'm doing
alright. `When I first begin the writing process I always start by typing out the full story.
Personally, I can't sit down and plan what I'm going to write about; formal drafting makes me feel
as if I have writers' block. Over the years I have taken bits and pieces of advice about my writing and

Teachers in high school were constantly trying to tell you how to write their way and perfect what
they thought was good writing. Little did I know everyone's writing style is good in its own way.
This academic writing class proved to me that no writing style is right or wrong, but instead all

What helped me analyze this was Carol Berkenkotter and Donald Murray's analysis of the writing
process. Donald Murray was analyzed for two months in his everyday life and they analyzed how
the environment he was in when writing affected his writing outcomes. The importance of the

importance of the audience really until I looked back and thought about my writing. Even going

Before taking this course my writing styles and habits were very different. I was the typical
procrastinator because I would wait until the night before a paper was due to start it. This did not
allow me enough time to properly proofread everything, which resulted in getting points deducted for

elements will be addressed in the paper. From taking this course I have been able to improve

The writing process is separated into five different stages, prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, and
publishing. When going throughout this process I feel that it is important to check your progress
quite frequently. After you complete each stage of the writing process it is always acceptable to
proofread and if need be, edit your work. There are certain questions you may ask yourself as you

Group Process Issues Trust may be a major issue during the group process. Since the members are
female middle school students, the likelihood of them previously being betrayed by a trusted friend
is great. It may be difficult for members to trust each other when disclosing personal information.
Another issue that may arise is shame. The girls may not fully self–disclose because they are
ashamed about the negative self–concept they have of themselves. It also may be difficult to say

The last two factors of attending are to resist tuning out and avoid interruptions. When it comes to
tuning out and interrupting, I have a huge dilemma while communicating with others. Back in high
school, that was one thing that I was good at; tuning out. I even still struggled with it coming into
college. In my first semester at Nassau Community College, a student asked me what we had to
get done on a class assignment and I had completely tuned out because I got easily distracted by
thinking about what I needed to do when I got home. I knew that tuning out was not a pleasant idea
and I should change that before it got out of hand. I keep a constant reminder that blocking mixed

interruptions has always been an issue and still is to this day. It only occurs when I'm with family

most school–going students. If we want to prevent interruptions from happening, turn–taking should

Two barriers that students and parents face during the transition process are indecisiveness and
unrealistic expectations. Many students do not know what they want to do after high school. Some
students and/or parents or both, have unrealistic expectations on what they can be in life. However,

again information is given in feedback form to the policy makers and over time the data and

Throughout my scholastic years I always had the mentality of asking "what could this class possibly

My professor told me that I needed to add that explanation or somehow incorporate it into the
sentence that follows so the reader can understand exactly what I am trying to convey. With that
mentioned in mind I incorporated both elements and made a clear point. Another error of my writing
process was not having a clear and specific thesis statement. I would often combined to many
thoughts and ideas all in one sentence, which made it very difficult for readers to understand my
main argument. For example, in my fourth essay about performance–enhancing drugs, my thesis
"Athletes are constantly recognizable to the public eye; their actions can affect the children and
adults for whom they serve as role models, which is why many athletes depend on the use of
performance–enhancing drugs to better their performance," was very vague and was not the main
focal point of the essay which it should have been. In recent years prior, I never had any problems
trying to convey my message or point. College was entirely a different league. My professor
suggested that I read other research papers to better understand how my thesis should sound and be
constructed. My professor then told me that I needed to add that explanation into the paragraph so
the reader can understand exactly what I am trying to get across with
