My educational background began with me attending public school for about three years, then I
went to catholic school. Middle school was the best part of my education. In middle school I was
given the opportunity to express myself creatively through dance, drama, writing, and with my
voice. I attended a school of arts for one year; I noticed some changes that I was not familiar with
when I was at student at catholic school. While in catholic school we studied a curriculum that

am ready to graduate middle school and go to high school. This got me thinking about college. I
realize that I need to find a high school that will help me succeed and reach my goal of going to
college. I need a program that will help me find new things that will interest me. As an 8th grader
getting ready to go into high school I was looking at applications and, I came across Lake View High
School and I was intrigued. As I read on I was satisfied with what I read because I know that this

of this school. Lake View is a HOME, which represents the four core values of: Honor, Ownership,

Leadership involves a set of learnable experiences. Exceptional leaders are exceptional learners.
This essay reviews some of the current literature related to effective leadership in education with a
special focus on Marzano's research on leadership "that works" (2005).
Most definitions of leadership involve four elements including process – a transaction between
leader and followers, context – usually a group with a common purpose, influence – affect on group,

is still responsible for the decisions that are made. This style is used when employees are able to
analyze the situation and determine what needs to be done and how to do it. The principal cannot
possibly do everything. Priorities should be set and certain tasks delegated.
Marzano conducted a meta–analysis of 69 studies over the last 35 years, which reviewed teacher
surveys of principal behaviors and student achievement. This analysis revealed that the principal can
have a profound effect on the student achievement. An average correlation of .25 was computed
between the leadership behavior of the principal and the average academic achievement of students
in the school. Until Marzano's study was completed, researchers had really questioned whether
principals had any impact on student achievement. Marzano assigned a number to it. The study has
indicated that if you increase the principal's leadership ability by one standard deviation – from the
50th percentile to the 84th percentile – you will see an increase in student achievement from the 50th
percentile to the 60th percentile. A correlation can also be seen in terms of school effectiveness.

leaders that focus their attention on creating a positive school culture begin with a period of
initiating a school process that focuses on school vision, use of data, shared expectations, and
collaborative teamwork. In order for a positive school culture to be established, the principal must
foster an atmosphere where teachers, students, and parents know where they fit in and how they can
work together to support teaching and learning. Creating a positive school culture requires the
principal to develop a vision of learning that is clearly communicated to the staff and students.
Additionally, principals must create a climate that fosters shared authority and accountability if they
