Workplace Diversity Within The Workplace
As companies become more diverse in the work field employees are getting harder to manage and
understand. One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity is
defined as all characteristics and experiences that defined each employee as individuals, but it can
also be misunderstood as discrimination against employees. Diversity can include race, ethnicity, sex,
religion, disability and sexual orientation discrimination. One reason why workplace diversity is
important is because when you respect your employees productivity rate rises and many companies
do not know that. A diverse workplace targets to create an inclusive culture that values and uses the
talents of all employees.
Evolution of Workplace Diversity In 1964 the civil rights act made it illegal for employment
organizations to practice discrimination in the workplace. Based on race, ethnicity, sex, religion,
disability and sexual orientation. In 1965 congress pass an executive order which was 11246 it
required contractors to taker affirmative actions and to ensure all employees are getting the same
treatment in the workplace. These laws eliminated discrimination of certain classes in the
workplace and organizations that did not abide by employment fair labor treatment laws were fine
or shut down. Even though some organizations became more diverse the change was slow over
time because of certain classes of workers. In order to establish workplace diversity companies
began to establish

use this process, they would have a more diverse and work friendly workplace environment. This
would allow the female population a more inviting work environment and encourage more women to

Diversity And Discrimination In The Workplace
Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace Diversity and discrimination are taken to have the
same meaning to most people but this is not the case. Diversity is more in differ of certain things
such as ideas and beliefs while discrimination is more in differ of things such as race, age, and
gender. Yes, both are in differ of something but what is important to understand is that they are in
differ of a variety of things. Yet it is sad but these qualities happen each and every day in the
workplace. It does not matter what kind of work or business it is, there is always going to be some

good leadership saw the negative affects towards deep–level diversity disappear due to the qualities
that the leader had which was bringing the team together to work as one. Also, the teams that had
the good perception of support saw that the negative affects of differential attitude towards
diversity started to decrease because the leadership actually showed they cared about the people

the best because it will motivate the employees to work when they are happy. While most think
that any kind of diversity can hurt businesses in the workplace that is not always the case.
Actually, cultural diversity has just as much or maybe more benefits then it does challenges.

Diversity In The Workplace: A Case Study
Diversity in the workplace has been a topic of interest to many organizational leaders, policy
makers and practitioners in the field of organizational psychology. According to Bell and Berry
(2007), the report for workforce of 2000 was minority (i.e. Black, Hispanic etc.) women will make
up most entrants to the workforce. The United States workforce did increase and became more
diversified mostly in private sector (Pitts, 2006). This topic of diversity in the workplace is close to
my heart because I am an African–American woman which happens to be mixed as well but since I
am of darker complexion I am solely seen as Black which means I have experienced some racism
within corporate America. My dilemma however; is because I love all people and happen to be of

lack for the firm. Although, the Black woman meant no harm she felt it was wasteful not to use
the tin can but it was the difference in their social status which caused the unconscious bias
(Moule, 2009) and difference in their perspectives. So, there are times a decision is made from a
place of ignorance and not racism which is oftentimes difficult to recognize if instant offense
stops communication where clarity may be gained. This is what led me to want to do a research
paper on organizational diversity especially in relation to gender. However, diversity is not just
about race (Roberson & Stevens, 2006) it entails age, gender, culture which is a range of different

Benefits of Workplace Diversity
In the 21st century, workplace diversity has enhanced organization performances and communication
skills which benefited the organizations to become successful businesses. Increasing adaptability in
the workplace, having to value diversity, and executing more effectively are three benefits of
workplace diversity. Organizations most definitely have the ability to embrace their workplace
diversity by helping their employees realize the benefits that enhances the business to become more
competitive and successful. Unfortunately there are researchers that argue that workplace diversity

learn to work cooperatively with them".(Robison Wood,2009)

The problem that most organizations are arguing is that diversity can also lead to misunderstanding,
suspicion, and conflict which can result in low competitiveness and performance in the workplace.
"However, the preponderance of the evidence favors a more pessimistic view: that diversity creates
social decisions, which in turn create negative performance outcome for the group."(Mannix, Neale,
2005) Sometimes not all companies are in the same situations when it comes to the diversity the
workplace, and also not all the associates of management are leading their employees by not
encouraging or giving them the trust they need. In addition I agree with my secondary research,
therefore I believe that if the companies apply strategies in increasing adaptability, having to value

"Maximizing and capitalizing on workplace diversity has become an important issue for
management today." [ (Kelli A. Green, 2002) ] Why is diversity beneficial to a business?
Throughout the years companies have come to realize that there is a distinct advantage to
diversity within their business, both in the corporate world as well as the retail environment.
When companies hire diverse employees from different cultures they are making their company
stronger and more marketable. Whether a company is just starting out or been in business for
while they need to realize that diversity needs to be part of their business plan going forward. The
global marketplace is built upon many different cultures from all around the world. Companies
today need to be able to interact with each other in order to increase sales and promote their
products to clients globally as well. Advantages of diversity in a workplace are: * Increased
creativity * Increased productivity * New attitudes * New language skills * Global understanding *

The unemployment rate for blacks was 10.9%, while the unemployment for whites was 5.4%. This
difference should not be as tremendous because blacks use almost as many search methods as
whites when looking for employment. According to the Census Bureau, in 2001, blacks used an
average of 1.79 methods of searching and whites used an average of 1.87 methods of searching for
employment. These methods included, sending resumes, placing ads, employment agencies,
contacting the employer directly, and many others. Therefore, there must be another factor that is
contributing to the increase in the unemployment rate of blacks. "According to the Fair Employee
Practices Commission, African Americans face discrimination in one out of every five job
interviews" (Bernard 16). In 2001, "blacks held 11.3% of all managerial and professional jobs

women, blacks and Hispanics. The percentage of Asians in the United States is much lower than the
percentage of women, blacks, and Hispanics, accounting for only 3.6% of the population. However,
many would consider Asians to be more fortunate than any other group of minorities. Asians are
considered the "model minority". The stereotype "model minority" was given to Asians because, as

The past decade, diversity in the workplace has become one of the most frequently discussed
topics in management groups or circles, while interested academically in the actual prospective
of workplace diversity has remained limited. To be successful in managing diversity in the
workplace first one must understand it from a personal perspective. To be able to derive
knowledge and strength from one's differences shows deep faces in character. A book I read in
high school defined diversity as "the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles,
perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact"
(Rasmussen, 1996, p. 274). Workplace diversity is characterized as representing two perspectives:

It is believed that in order to change people, you have to change the way that the think.
The general line of reasoning is that if we learn to incorporate each other's diverse traits and
characteristics in the workplace, we can then use these differences to foster an innovative
environment, which will give the company a competitive advantage over the competitors that do not
accept workforce diversity. According to the Allied Academies International Conference, "Diversity
is rapidly becoming a common practice among companies due to the increasing number of minorities
entering the job market today. As these groups become more prevalent throughout companies,
upper–level employees are facing numerous challenges when determining what changes must take
place to create a positive working environment for everyone. Management is responsible for the
development and implementation of effective policies directly relating to diversity to ensure the
acceptance of minorities into the workplace and to aid in minorities' success through equal
opportunities and treatment." (Marcia L. James, 2001, Academy for Studies in International
Business Proceedings)

Workforce diversity is a major factor in small and big organizations. Some organizations have
created workforce activities to promote diversity and differences. Although there is no way to
define workforce diversity, these programs and activities are making positive results in
organizations. Workplace diversity is a way to define behaviors of employees to acceptable or not.
Diversity shows how employees may not or may be similar or different. Some differences in
character observed are: disability, national origin, religion, color, sex, age, or any other differences.
The way organizations define diversity may determine how successful the organization is.
The EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) was formed by the government to ensure that all
everyone has an equal opportunity for employment, regardless of sex, race, religion, color,
disability, national origin, or age. They believe workplace diversity is crucial to maintain balance
in companies, making sure that individuals are characterized by their differences and similarities.
The need for a diverse workplace is backed by the need to cooperate with the legislation of anti–
discrimination puts a huge demand on companies. The EEO is in place to help those that feel
unequal or treated different to have the opportunity to succeed just as much as his or her coworker.
The impact of diversity in the workplace is dependent upon several factors. Across companies

The Importance Of Diversity In The Workplace
Men are 30% more likely to be hired for a high level position job than women (Stutes). Jobs
discriminate and separate genders, races, etc. in a workplace. This is not fair because it should
not matter what you look like or who you are, we should all be treated the same no matter what. It
is hard for someone to get a job because bosses can discriminate and that makes people not
succeed. You should have to work towards the higher level position so you earn it and not just be
given it because you are the gender the boss wants. Diversity should be acknowledged so everyone
can have a chance to make a living and support their families. Companies need to be fair and treat
everyone equally and not just by looks. Diversity means that everyone works together no matter what
race, culture, gender they are. Workplaces should have diversity taken place in them so they
succeed and people have to work with others no matter what. It shouldn't be about the looks or
beliefs, it's about supporting your family and working together to create one goal. Diversity is
becoming a big part of our world and it should continue as companies are growing and hiring. 67%
of bosses and job seekers seek for diverse workplaces (Stutes). That still leaves room for 33% of
bosses that are against having diverse workers. This shows that companies are against a certain race
and gender. That should not be present. Continuing, diverse workplaces provide families with the
money they need to survive.

bring up some of the most difficult issues employers have to face. Resolving these issues requires
understanding the law and balancing the business's needs with an employee's desire to practice his

the courts have held that employers aren't required to accommodate employees' religious activities

other departments resulting in inefficiency, or discriminating against other employees or violating
seniority systems. Accommodations that don't constitute undue hardship to the employer include
voluntary substitutions or employee "swaps," flexible work schedules, floating or optional

Workplace Diversity – Benefits and Employment Laws
Workplace diversity refers to the variety of differences between people in an organization. Diversity
encompasses race, gender, ethnic group, age, personality, education, back ground, cognitive style and
much more. As the work places are becoming more multicultural and diverse, there is an increased
need in understanding the dimensions of diversity and cultural differences that affects the business
communication within organizations. A better understanding of these differences is not only
important to effectively bridge such gaps but also helpful in identifying the unique strengths and
perspectives, each diverse group brings, that an organization can benefit from.
Globalization presents new markets at home and abroad, and firms increasingly recognize the
importance of hiring a workforce that reflects their potential markets. Global companies strive to
create an inclusive culture in which differences are recognized and valued. By bringing together
people from diverse backgrounds and providing them opportunity to contribute their skills,
experience and perspectives, companies are able to deliver the best innovative solutions to
challenges and add value to their stakeholders.
In recent times the term "inclusion" is replacing diversity, diversity refers to a group's demographic
qualities, while inclusion involves the degree to which individuals feel a part of the organizational

America's past should teach America's today that success lies within diversity. In order to achieve
ultimate success, diversity is a necessity. Workforce diversity is a fact of organizational life. It is
also a key concern for theory and practice in organizational behavior ( van–Knippenberg, De–Dreu,
Homan, 2004). Diversity is important to companies because with a diverse environment people can
benefit and learn from others' ideas. Other reasons for the importance of diversity to many
organizations are the recognition of differences as prerequisites for high performance and continuous
improvement, enhancing the effectiveness and creativity of the organization, and valuing conflicts
as opportunities for more effective decision–making and problem solving. Diversity has a major
impact on our behaviors in the work place. Many organizations are placing primary emphasis on

Workplace Diversity Issues
Workplace diversity policies have emerged among countless companies, in an attempt to increase
diversity among its workers. While noble in idea, the effect it is having is ultimately questionable.
In a very recent study conducted by Dover, Kaiser, and Major, its overall effect to company
diversity is negligible (John Moyer, 2016). The study went on to demonstrate "diversity policies can
blind white men to racism and sexism at work and also lead to resentment (Moyer, 2016, p. 1)."
This idea is reinforced via Reddit commenters' anecdotes and an older study (Moyer, 2016). The
study demonstrated how whites felt threatened by companies that had workplace diversity policies
compared to companies that didn't (Moyer, 2016, p.2). In essence, as the country increases in
diversity, white people feel more threatened (Moyer, 2016, p.3).
This article relates to our class by demonstrating the racial friction in America. In thinking that the
increase in diversity as threatening to the status quo, it is unsurprising that white people feel
threatened and treated unfairly. This perceived unfairness leads to racism and sexism in and out of
the workplace. Which, in turn,...show more content...
The study was very recent, a pleasant surprise, and it raised some interesting thoughts. I wished the

white, which entails that I have white privilege. Also citing Reddit commenters, while it is the

Ethnicity – I honestly feel like I could work with any group of people. I'm comfortable working
with people who are similar to myself and people who are completely different from me. I'm

In all honesty, there isn't any diversity at my internship. I'm the only person in my twenties and I'm
the only African American there. Moreover, all of the attorneys are Caucasian men. However, I'm
fully capable of working with them. Everyone is very professional and accepting. Interestingly
enough, one of the attorneys constantly compliments me on how professional I am and I think I've
successfully changed the stereotypical perception that one of the attorneys had about African
Americans since I've been at the firm which is definitely a positive thing. I'm an easy person to

One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity is defined as all characteristics and experiences that defined each employee as individuals, but it can also be misunderstood as discrimination against employees. Diversity can include race, ethnicity, sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation discrimination. One reason why workplace diversity is important is because when you respect your employees productivity rate rises and many companies do not know that. A diverse workplace targets to create an inclusive culture that values and uses the talents of all employees. Evolution of Workplace Diversity In 1964 the civil rights act made it illegal for employment organizations to practice discrimination in the workplace. Diversity And Discrimination In The Workplace Diversity and Discrimination in the Workplace Diversity and discrimination are taken to have the same meaning to most people but this is not the case. Diversity is more in differ of certain things such as ideas and beliefs while discrimination is more in differ of things such as race, age, and gender. Yes, both are in differ of something but what is important to understand is that they are in differ of a variety of things. Yet it is sad but these qualities happen each and every day in the workplace. It does not matter what kind of work or business it is, there is always going to be some sort of diversity and discrimination. But, it also shows that groups that had that traditionally good leadership saw the negative affects towards deep–level diversity disappear due to the qualities that the leader had which was bringing the team together to work as one. Also, the teams that had the good perception of support saw that the negative affects of differential attitude towards diversity started to decrease because the leadership actually showed they cared about the people and company. This shows why good and positive leadership can really change an organization for the best because it will motivate the employees to work when they are happy. While most think that any kind of diversity can hurt businesses in the workplace that is not always the case. Actually, cultural diversity has just as much or maybe more benefits then it does challenges. According to the Hult News, one benefit from cultural diversity is it allows an organization to offer a broader and more adaptable range of products and services (hult.edu). • 4. Diversity In The Workplace: A Case Study Diversity in the workplace has been a topic of interest to many organizational leaders, policy makers and practitioners in the field of organizational psychology. According to Bell and Berry (2007), the report for workforce of 2000 was minority (i.e. Black, Hispanic etc.) women will make up most entrants to the workforce. The United States workforce did increase and became more diversified mostly in private sector (Pitts, 2006). This topic of diversity in the workplace is close to my heart because I am an African–American woman which happens to be mixed as well but since I am of darker complexion I am solely seen as Black which means I have experienced some racism within corporate America. My dilemma however; is because I love all people and happen to be of mixed race I know racism exist but believe it is not always the reason behind the behaviors many deem as prejudice....show more content... for the office but one of the equity attorneys was upset due to that act to him displayed a status of lack for the firm. Although, the Black woman meant no harm she felt it was wasteful not to use the tin can but it was the difference in their social status which caused the unconscious bias (Moule, 2009) and difference in their perspectives. So, there are times a decision is made from a place of ignorance and not racism which is oftentimes difficult to recognize if instant offense stops communication where clarity may be gained. This is what led me to want to do a research paper on organizational diversity especially in relation to gender. However, diversity is not just about race (Roberson & Stevens, 2006) it entails age, gender, culture which is a range of different things that categorize a group or selection of people as Get more content on HelpWriting.net

These methods included, sending resumes, placing ads, employment agencies, contacting the employer directly, and many others. "According to the Fair Employee Practices Commission, African Americans face discrimination in one out of every five job interviews" (Bernard 16). In 2001, "blacks held 11.3% of all managerial and professional jobs (Kinicki & Kreitner 54)." Today, many Asian Americans have different concerns from those held by women, blacks and Hispanics. The percentage of Asians in the United States is much lower than the percentage of women, blacks, and Hispanics, accounting for only 3.6% of the population. However, many would consider Asians to be more fortunate than any other group of minorities. Asians are considered the "model minority". Workplace Diversity Essay The past decade, diversity in the workplace has become one of the most frequently discussed topics in management groups or circles, while interested academically in the actual prospective of workplace diversity has remained limited. To be successful in managing diversity in the workplace first one must understand it from a personal perspective. To be able to derive knowledge and strength from one's differences shows deep faces in character. A book I read in high school defined diversity as "the mosaic of people who bring a variety of backgrounds, styles, perspectives, values, and beliefs as assets to the groups and organizations with which they interact" (Rasmussen, 1996, p. 274). Workplace diversity is characterized as representing two perspectives: functionalist perspectives and a critical believe there is several challenges with diversity in the workforce. The general line of reasoning is that if we learn to incorporate each other's diverse traits and characteristics in the workplace, we can then use these differences to foster an innovative environment, which will give the company a competitive advantage over the competitors that do not accept workforce diversity. According to the Allied Academies International Conference, "Diversity is rapidly becoming a common practice among companies due to the increasing number of minorities entering the job market today. As these groups become more prevalent throughout companies, upper–level employees are facing numerous challenges when determining what changes must take place to create a positive working environment for everyone. Management is responsible for the development and implementation of effective policies directly relating to diversity to ensure the acceptance of minorities into the workplace and to aid in minorities' success through equal opportunities and treatment." • 12. Workplace Diversity Essay Workforce diversity is a major factor in small and big organizations. Some organizations have created workforce activities to promote diversity and differences. Although there is no way to define workforce diversity, these programs and activities are making positive results in organizations. Workplace diversity is a way to define behaviors of employees to acceptable or not. Diversity shows how employees may not or may be similar or different. Some differences in character observed are: disability, national origin, religion, color, sex, age, or any other differences. The way organizations define diversity may determine how successful the organization is. The EEO (Equal Employment Opportunity) was formed by the government to ensure that all everyone has an equal opportunity for employment, regardless of sex, race, religion, color, disability, national origin, or age. They believe workplace diversity is crucial to maintain balance in companies, making sure that individuals are characterized by their differences and similarities. The need for a diverse workplace is backed by the need to cooperate with the legislation of anti– discrimination puts a huge demand on companies. • 13. The Importance Of Diversity In The Workplace Men are 30% more likely to be hired for a high level position job than women (Stutes). Jobs discriminate and separate genders, races, etc. in a workplace. This is not fair because it should not matter what you look like or who you are, we should all be treated the same no matter what. It is hard for someone to get a job because bosses can discriminate and that makes people not succeed. You should have to work towards the higher level position so you earn it and not just be given it because you are the gender the boss wants. Diversity should be acknowledged so everyone can have a chance to make a living and support their families. Companies need to be fair and treat everyone equally and not just by looks. Diversity means that everyone works together no matter what race, culture, gender they are. Workplaces should have diversity taken place in them so they succeed and people have to work with others no matter what. It shouldn't be about the looks or beliefs, it's about supporting your family and working together to create one goal. Diversity is becoming a big part of our world and it should continue as companies are growing and hiring. 67% of bosses and job seekers seek for diverse workplaces (Stutes). That still leaves room for 33% of bosses that are against having diverse workers. This shows that companies are against a certain race and gender. That should not be present. Religion Religion in the workplace can bring up some of the most difficult issues employers have to face. Resolving these issues requires understanding the law and balancing the business's needs with an employee's desire to practice his or her religion. One of the most contentious conflicts is between an employee's desire to take time off and the potential reduction in productivity and profitability. In ruling on Title VII religion cases, the courts have held that employers aren't required to accommodate employees' religious activities when it involves increased financial costs, transferring supervisory personnel or employees from other departments resulting in inefficiency, or discriminating against other employees or violating seniority systems. Accommodations that don't constitute undue hardship to the employer include voluntary substitutions or employee "swaps," flexible work schedules, floating or optional holidays, staggered work hours, and allowing employees to make up lost time. While the workforce has made strides in the direction of equality, it is still far from attaining total equality in the workplace. A company must value diversity. The main objectives of valuing diversity include awareness, education, and positive recognition of the differences among people in the workforce. Organizations are increasingly emphasizing group work or teamwork as a source of competitive advantage in a diverse workforce. In order to achieve ultimate success, diversity is a necessity. Workforce diversity is a fact of organizational life. It is also a key concern for theory and practice in organizational behavior ( van–Knippenberg, De–Dreu, Homan, 2004). Diversity is important to companies because with a diverse environment people can benefit and learn from others' ideas. Other reasons for the importance of diversity to many organizations are the recognition of differences as prerequisites for high performance and continuous improvement, enhancing the effectiveness and creativity of the organization, and valuing conflicts as opportunities for more effective decision–making and problem solving. Diversity has a major impact on our behaviors in the work place. Many organizations are placing primary emphasis on people who fit their cultures when hiring. The reasoning is that if the people have the "right" attitude, they will more than likely understand and adapt to the goals and expectations of the organization. The necessary skills can be taught. That is a lot easier than hiring people with the right skills but wrong attitude probably cannot be changed. Many organizations have determined what it takes to succeed in their companies. • 20. Workplace Diversity Issues Workplace diversity policies have emerged among countless companies, in an attempt to increase diversity among its workers. While noble in idea, the effect it is having is ultimately questionable. In a very recent study conducted by Dover, Kaiser, and Major, its overall effect to company diversity is negligible (John Moyer, 2016). The study went on to demonstrate "diversity policies can blind white men to racism and sexism at work and also lead to resentment (Moyer, 2016, p. 1)." This idea is reinforced via Reddit commenters' anecdotes and an older study (Moyer, 2016). The study demonstrated how whites felt threatened by companies that had workplace diversity policies compared to companies that didn't (Moyer, 2016, p.2). In essence, as the country increases in diversity, white people feel more threatened (Moyer, 2016, p.3). This article relates to our class by demonstrating the racial friction in America. In thinking that the increase in diversity as threatening to the status quo, it is unsurprising that white people feel threatened and treated unfairly. This perceived unfairness leads to racism and sexism in and out of the workplace. Which, in turn,...show more content... The study was very recent, a pleasant surprise, and it raised some interesting thoughts. I wished the article explained how to go about increasing workplace diversity. On a side note, I found the use of the word "white people" almost dehumanizing, which could easily be transferred on to the media's (and the everyday) use of the word "black people." Obviously, I found it odd, due to the fact I am white, which entails that I have white privilege. Also citing Reddit commenters, while it is the "front page of the internet," was rather odd to see. Unsurprisingly enough, I agree with the study. I personally remember stories told to me where the mere mention of "workplace diversity" was filled with contempt. While sad, it personally validates the study's Get more content on HelpWriting.net

I'm comfortable working with people who are similar to myself and people who are completely different from me. I'm African American so I can obviously work with other African Americans and I can also work well with other ethnic minorities (such as biracial, Hispanic, Asian, etc.). In addition, I'm also very comfortable working around Caucasians. In fact, I've worked around Caucasians more than I've worked with any other ethnic group. Age Group – I have the most experience with other millennials and people my own age. However, I've also been around people in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, etc. Some of these people are my family members and some have been family friends. I don't have much experience with little children but I think I would be able to work with/around them. Economic Status – I have the most experience with people who are middle class and upper–middle class.
