Remote BLOB Storage (RBS) allows storing large binary objects like pictures and documents in SQL Server's FILESTREAM data type instead of within the database. This improves performance by reducing database size and retrieval times. To enable RBS in SharePoint, an administrator provisions a data store by adding a filestream filegroup to the content database, installs the RBS provider, and enables RBS on the content database. Verification shows new library items stored in the file system instead of the database.
