Meta Description tag is an HTML code which carries a short description about the content of the page. The Meta Description tag is used in the page source of a web page and is not visible on the web page itself. It is intended to be a brief and concise summary of the web page's content. It is placed within the <head> </head> section of the page, usually after the Title tag and before the Meta keyword tag, although the order is not important. How is it used? 1. Meta Descriptions are often used in Search Result Pages as short descriptions of the target page 2. Meta descriptions are often used to submit the site to major search directories, industry directories and yellow pages 3. Some directory editors use the Description Meta tag content to describe when they link to your website SEO Importance: (High) Meta description tag contributes very well to the search engine ranking. If the search keywords are present in the Meta description tag, then the search engines use the content of this tag in the SERPs. If the searched keywords are not present in the Meta description tag, then the search engine constructs snippets of the text on the page, which contains and surrounds the search terms. It is therefore important that the page-relevant keywords are present in the Meta description tag. A nicely written Meta description influences a search user to actually click on the search engine results and visit the site. Some webmasters & SEO experts used Meta descriptions to load up some spammy keyword lists, but with new Search Engine algorithms, this is now a dangerous technique. How to prepare (Tips): 1. Meta description tag should be written like a sales pitch, describing the content of the page nicely 2. Use important keywords for the page in the Meta description. Do not make it read like a collection of keywords. 3. Do not repeat the keywords more than twice. This will not help 4. Limit the description to about 25-30 words but avoid using more than 256 characters 5.
