Notas del editor

  1. Also referred to as the Fellowship Offering (3:1-17;7:11-21, 28-34 )The Hebrew term for the offering indicates “wholeness,” “welfare” and “peace.”Peace In 8% Of History: Only eight percent of the time since the beginning of recorded history has the world been entirely at peace. In over 3,100 years, only 286 have been warless and 8,000 treaties have been broken in this time. —Christian Victory. Tan, P. L. (1996). Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations: Signs of the Times. Garland, TX: Bible Communications, Inc.The third offering commanded by God was the Peace Offering. Third because there can be no peace either with God or man until both God's requirements and man's needs are fully met. These are fully met in the Burnt Offering (Christ’s dedication to God), and the Meat offering: Christ is the Bread of the world. When we see the full satisfaction made by our Substitute we have peace, and not before. Also, there cant be peace without a relationship.Offering A voluntary sacrifice given for thanksgiving, completion of a vow, or a joyful offering to the Lord.Male or female animal from the flock or herd offered with cakes or wafers. The fat of the offering was burned on the altar The breast of the flock waved before the Lord. The right thigh was given to the sacrificing priest as his portion for consumption The shoulder was shared between the priests and their families. The remaining portion was returned to the offerer for consumption with his or her family and friends. The worshiper places his or her hand on the offering to transfer guilt and then slaughters the animal. The priest sprinkles the blood on the altar. The peace offering is as an expression of fellowship with God based upon the work of the Lord Jesus Christ upon the cross. For God desires us to be at peace with Him, He longs to bring us into fellowship with Him.
  2. In the five offerings we see different ways in which the alienation between the Living God and humanity is addressed. All these were offered on the brazen altar. The work of Jesus has many facets. The more we appreciate these prophetic offerings, the more we will appreciate all that Jesus has done for us. The sacrificial system therefore presents different models or analogies to describe the effects of sin and the way of remedying them. The burnt offering uses a personal picture: of man the guilty sinner who deserves to die for his sin and of the animal dying in his place. God accepts the animal as a ransom for man. sin offering uses a medical model: sin makes the world so dirty that God can no longer dwell there. The blood of the animal disinfects the sanctuary in order that God may continue to be present with His people. The guilt offering presents a commercial picture of sin. Sin is a debt which man incurs against God. The debt is paid through the offered animal.
  3. Leviticus 3 gives three options for a peace offering. animals killed for food are to be sacrificed as peace offerings (Lev. 17:5);ver. 1“If his oblation be a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offer it of the herd, whether it be male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the Lord”. verse 6: “And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace offering unto the Lord, be of the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. If he offer a lamb for his offering, then shall he offer it before the Lord.” verse 12, “If his offering be a goat, then he shall offer it before the Lord.” The sacrifice of the herd speaks of Christ as the devoted Servant of God. independent One: male, or the subject One: female.Lamb speaks of Him as the One who was consecrated even unto death; and the Goatof the One who took the sinner’s place.Unlike the burnt offering, the entire peace offering was not placed upon the altar; only a very small part of it. Offered for three reasons: His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fireA. Thanksgiving - (Lev. 7:12-15) commanded not only to bring wafers and cakes of unleavened (the significance of which was covered under the meat offering), but also cakes of leavened bread. (vs. 13) . This introduces representatively the existence of sin; not, of course, in the offering, but in the offerer. The very name "Peace Offering" implies peace needs to be made between the sinless (unleavened bread) and the sinner (leavened bread).B/C. The Vow and Joyful offering  - (Lev. 7:16-18) The offering of the vow seems to be essentially the same as the Thanksgiving except for one major change. Thanksgiving Peace Offering eaten the same day. When you make peace with the Lord (Reconciliation) it is an instantaneous thing (picture of the, new birth') as opposed to a vow that is a continuous thing. Therefore the peace offering, in the form of a vow could be eaten the next day but not the third. By the third day the possibility existed of the meat becoming contaminated and God has always been unwilling to accept anything that is unclean (Lev. 7:19-21).the eating of the sacrifice must not be separated from the offering on the altar.God will not permit us to separate communion with Him from the work of the Cross. Our fellowship with Him is based upon the one supreme sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ who there made peace for us.
  4. II. The Elements A. The Fat - (3:3,4) . Fat in the Scriptures always means the richest and the best (Gen. 45:18; Prov. 11:25; Prov. 13:4; Isa. 25:6). And when in the sacrifices these are indicated, it is God's portion. The fat consumed on the altar represented the best portion - Christ is the best.B. The Kidneys - (3:4) The kidneys were something that only could be reached through death. They were something that were innermost in the body of the sacrifices. Hence where the Peace Offering is concerned, the kidneys pictured Christ volition. It's interesting that the Holy Spirit notes that the kidneys were next to the flanks. The flanks of course, were a picture of strength and confidence. (Eph. 6:14) .Christ decision to go to the cross was accomplished by perfect confidence in the Father's plan (Eph. 1:3-6). In spite of tremendous opposition Christ submitted to that plan. (Isa. 50:6-7).Kidneys are purifiers. We need them because of the tremendous amount of impurities and waste that go through our bodies. From a spiritual standpoint Christ's kidneys would have been the only acceptable ones to God because of no impurities (2 CoL. 5:21).C. The Caul - (3:4) According to Webster the caul is the "large fatty omentum covering the intestines.“A possibility is the caul is a membrane and consequently somewhat transparent. The membrane laid bare could be the manifestation of God's glory in Christ, who is the only visible Person of the God head (Jn. 1:18).D. The Rump - (3:9) If the offering was to be from the flock something new was added: "the whole rump shall be taken off." Since the rump contained the most fat, it was esteemed to be the most delicate portion of the sacrificial animal. Of course Jesus Christ is most closely identified with the lamb (John 1:29), therefore it would be natural for God to demand more of this offering.
  5. The peace offering was very different for two reasons: first, it was optional and second the worshipper could eat some of the sacrifice. In fact, the worshipper was allowed to bring family and friends along to spend a couple of days enjoying the meat in the presence of the LORDGod at the tabernacle.IV. The Portions -A. The Breast - (7:31) The breast was a portion that was designated for Aaron and his sons. Indicates the seat of affections. All of the priests were to feed upon that which speaks of the love of Christ. (1 Jn. 3:1-6; Jn. 15:1-10).B. The Right Shoulder - (7:32-34) For the priests. speaks of the strength of the Lord, (His omnipotent power) was the special portion for the offering priest himself. God will never call you to a job, ministry, or place without giving you the necessary strength to perform the task (Phil. 4:19; 2 Cor. 12:9,10).C. The Remainder - The remainder could be eaten by the offerer which pictures so clearly what the peace offering was really all about. God and man becoming reconciled and peace being made Col. 1:20; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, [I say], whether [they be] things in earth, or things in heaven. Rom. 5:1 --Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.God Himself, His anointed priests, the offerer and his friends, all feasting together upon the same offering, the sacrifice of peace offering.
  6. To enjoy fellowship with God, I must be in a right state of soul. There can be no communion with unforgiven sin upon the conscience. Before God no true believer has uncleanness upon him.“The blood of Jesus Christ, God‟s Son, cleanses us from all sin.” When on that cross our iniquities were laid on Christ, He had no sin in Him, but He took our sins upon Him. We now have no sins upon us, but we do have sin within, but this sin should ever be judged in the light of the cross of Christ. This is illustrated for us in ver. 13: “Besides the cakes, he shall offer for his offering leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings.” Here is a direct instance where leavened bread was used with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of the peace offering. We have already seen that no leaven was permitted in the meal offering, but this particular sacrifice evidently typifies not Christ Himself but the worshiper who came to God bringing his peace offering. It was as though the man was confessing: “In myself I am a poor sinner, sin is in my very nature; because of that I dare not approach God without an offering.” And on the basis of that offering he was accepted and could enter into fellowship with God.The only time that the fellowship offering had to be offered was at the Feast of Pentecost (Leviticus 23:19). That Feast, as we will see, was anexpression of hope in our New Creation future. In that Feast everybody had to look forward to the marriage feast of the Lamb.
  7. Christ Himself is our peace" (Ephesians 2:14), because "we who were once far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ" (Ephesians 2:13). Modern Crucifixion-For-Peace: On January 30, 1973, Patrice Tamao of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, allowed himself to be nailed to a cross “as a sacrifice for world peace and understanding among men.” As thousands watched on television, six-inch stainless- steel nails were driven through his hands and feet. Tamao had planned to remain on the cross for 48 hours, but after only 20 hours he had to cut short his voluntary crucifixion because of an infection in his right foot. The newspaper article had as its heading, “Crucifixion-for-peace falls short.”Tan, P. L. (1996). Encyclopedia of 7700 Illustrations: Signs of the Times. Garland, TX: Bible Communications, Inc.Thus we see that we have here set forth an all-important New Testament truth. Every believer has sin in him, but no believer has sin on him. Attention has often been directed to the three crosses on Calvary. On the centre cross hung that divine Man who had no sin in Him, but He did have sin on Him, for in that hour of His soul‟s anguish Jehovah laid on Him the iniquity of us all. He had no sins of His own, but He made Himself responsible for ours. They were all charged against His account, as Paul directed Philemon to charge the account of Onesimus against him. Paul became surety for Onesimus, and agreed to settle for him. This is but a faint picture of what Jesus did for sinners when “He bare our sins in His own body on the tree.” The impenitent thief had sin in him and sin on him; he was both sinful by nature and by practice, and he spurned the only Saviour who could have delivered him from his load of guilt. So he went into the presence of God with all his sins upon his soul to answer for them in the day of judgment when God will judge every man according to his works. But how different was the case of the penitent thief! He, too, had been as vile and guilty as the other one, but when he turned in repentance to the Lord Jesus and put his trust in Him, while he still had sin in him, God no longer imputed sin to him. It was not upon him because God saw it all as transferred toJesus.Col. 1:19, 20 states: “For it pleased the Father that in Him should all fulness dwell; and having made peace through the blood ofHis cross, by Him to reconcile all things unto Himself; by Him, I say, whether they be things in earth or things in heaven.” This is the peace offering. He has made peace by the blood of His cross. In Eph. 2:13, 14 we read: “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For He is our peace who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partitionbetween us.”
  8. Psalm 85, which may well be called the Psalm of the peace offering. Notice verses 1 and 2, “Lord, Thouhast been favorable unto Thy land: Thou hast brought back the captivity of Jacob. Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of Thy people, Thou hastcovered all their sin.” Then observe verses 7 to 11, “Show us Thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us Thy salvation. I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for He will speak peace unto His people, and to His saints: but let them not turn again to folly. Surely His salvation is nigh them that fear Him; that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other; truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven.” It is God Himself who speaks peace to His people, for He alone could devise a plan whereby mercy and truth could meet together and righteousness and peace kiss each other. Truth and righteousness demanded the payment of our fearful debt ere mercy could be shown to the sinner. That man could not settle the differences between himself and God is evident; atone for his own sins he could not. Zechariah 6: 12, 13, “And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the Man whose name is The BRANCH; and He shall grow up out of His place, and He shall build the temple of the Lord: even He shall build the temple of the Lord; and He shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon His throne; and He shall be a priest upon His throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between Them both.” The counsel of peace is between the Lord of hosts and the Man whose name is The Branch, or, to put it in New Testament language, it is between the Father and the Son. Peace was made when our Lord Jesus took our place upon the cross and met every claim of the outraged majesty of the throne of God. Now righteousness and peace are linked eternally together, and being justified by faith we have peace with God. This is not merely a sense of righteousness in our hearts; it is far more than that; it is a question settled between God and the sinner in perfect righteousness, so that grace can now go out to guilty man. When we believe this we enter into peace. We enjoy what Christ has effected.StoryAt the close of the war between the States, a party of Federal cavalrymen were riding along a road toward Richmond one day, when a poor scarecrow of a fellow, weak and emaciated, and clad only in the ragged remnants of a Confederate uniform, came out of the bushes on one side and attracted their attention by begging hoarsely for bread. He declared that he had been starving in the woods for a number of weeks, and subsisting only upon the few berries and roots he could find. They suggested that he go into Richmond with them and get what he needed. He demurred, saying that he was a deserter from the Confederate army, and he did not dare to show himself lest he be arrested and confined in prison, or possibly shot for desertion in time of war. They looked at him in amazement and asked, “Have you not heard the news?” “What news?” he anxiously enquired. “Why, the Confederacy no longer exists. General Lee surrendered to General Grant over a week ago, and peace is made.” “Oh!” he exclaimed, “peace is made, and I have been starving in the woods because I did not know it.” Believing the message, he went with them into the city to find comfort and food. Oh, unsaved one, let me press upon you the blessed truth that peace was made when our adorable Saviour died for our sins upon the cross of shame. Believe the message, then you enter into the good of it; and, remember, peace rests not on your frames or feelings but on His finished work.
  9. There’s a world out there who have not experienced peace.“Peace on earth and good will upon men” will be true only if they about Christ our Peace. For that our feet has to be shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.Mt 5:9 says, “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God”Go out and prove you are the sons and daughters of the Living God.Amen.
