Edward Brooke was the first African-American US Senator. He was born in 1919 in Washington D.C. and served in the army during WWII. Brooke was elected as Attorney General of Massachusetts in 1962, becoming the first African-American in that position for any state. In 1966, he was elected as Senator for Massachusetts, serving two terms from 1967 to 1979.
