1. Lesson 1.5: Solving Problems Algebraically
The 5-step method for solving word problems:
1)Read the problem carefully a few times. Write down what
information is given. Making a sketch may be helpful.
2)Identify what information is asked for. Give it a variable
name
3)Re-read the problem. Then write an open sentence
(variable equation) that represents the relationships among
the numbers in the problem.
4)Solve the open sentence (for now, use mental math)
5)Check your results with the words of the problem. Give
the answer with correct units. It is often helpful to answer
the question with a complete sentence.

them at a craft show. You spent $75 on materials and
you hope to make a profit of $100. How much should
