Material ConneXion is celebrating its 15 year anniversary this year – we were started by George Beylerian and acquired by Sandow Media in 2011. We have more than 6500 materials in our physical libraries in addition to our online database. Members include creative directors, art directors, industrial designers, packaging experts, brand managers, marketers as well as architects and interior designers. They use the library as a resource for new materials as well as to educate and learn more about the sustainable and innovative materials that are added each month. A jury reviews the materials selected by our in house experts each month and these are added to the database.
We opened our Shanghai office in January 2012, adding to our presence in China. Our Beijing office opened in 2012 and we aim to provide services to both multinationals that have manufacturing and production facilities here, as well as being a resource for local companies. Our original office is in New York and we have additional locations in Europe (Milan and Cologne) as well as Istanbul and other parts of Asia. Many of our members use the international offices and our consulting teams provide a global perspective on material innovation.
MaterialConnexion is set up to provide members and clients with a range of services which include the searchable online database, trend reports, strategy and workshops.
MaterialConneXion worked with Puma to create The Clever Little Bag which replaces the cardboard shoebox with a bag that reduces cardboard energy, water and diesel consumption by more than 60% each year. MaterialConneXion brought in designer Yves Behar on the project and the results have save the company millions of dollars in packaging each year. This is a good example of materials and design delivering great results.
An Eco-friendly Phone by Samsung: ReclaimLabeled as an environment-friendly overachiever, the design of Samsung Reclaim from Sprint features environmentally-responsible components and fully recyclable packaging. Fashionably trendy bags are perfect for today’s aim of saving the environment. The Eco-Friendly 60Bag by KatarzynaAkincyz and RaminiguizTruchanowicz definitely meets the requirement of being fashionably trendy and eco-friendly at the same time. The 60Bag is made out of flax-viicose non-woven fabric that is Polish made and is produced with flax fiber industrial waste, thus the 60Bag does not exploit any natural resources and decreases the production of energy use. Other eco-friendly benefit the 60Bag brings is that, it will easily decompose 60 days after the user has discarded it, thus it does not require any expensive recycling processes.
PlantBottle™ packaging looks, feels and functions just like traditional PET plastic, and remains fully recyclable. The only difference is that up to 30 percent of the material is made from plants. The plant material is produced through an innovative process that turns natural sugars found in plants into a key component for PET plastic. Currently, PlantBottle™ is made using sugarcane ethanol from Brazil, the only source widely recognized by thought leaders globally for its unique environmental and social performance. The first ever recyclable PET plastic beverage bottle made partially from plants. PlantBottle packaging looks, functions and recycles just like traditional PET plastic, but does so with a lighter footprint on the planet and its scarce resources. What’s really innovative is that in February 2011, Heinz announced a partnership with Coca Cola allowing them to adopt the Plant bottle technology and they are converting their ketchup packaging to use plant bottle packaging.Honored at 2011 Edison Awards for Best New Product - Sustainable Packaging.Winner of prestigious DuPont Award for Packaging Innovation!
An Eco-friendly case and packaging from Imoeba: The cases themselves are made from recycled leather, and the packaging is 90 percent recycled paper. This packaging is only using 10 percent raw materials, and the rest of the content has been rescued from landfills. In an ideal world the packaging will be recycled again.

Also from Design Packaging in the USA, is this reusable non-woven totes printed two colors, gloss laminated, and black trim for Bare Escentuals. A great example of retail promotional packaging.
Moet Hennessy recently used Swarovski crystals in an innovative way on the bottles of champagne.
Another trend we are seeing is the increasing use of nanotechnology. Packaging that incorporates nanomaterials can be “smart,” which means that it can respond to environmental conditions or repair itself or alert a consumer to contamination and/or the presence of pathogens. Here we see a stain-resistant, Nanotechnology-treated fabric printed one color with soft EVA window and stitched fabric zipper pull for Crate & Barrel.
In the beauty realm we see a lot of interesting packaging innovation
Amore Pacific uses Du Pont’s Surlyn® which, coupled with toughness, freedom from chipping and breaking and chemical resistance, have made it one of the preferred packaging materials across the multiple brands of AmorePacific. Surlyn is available in a wide range of grades, each with a different balance of properties. In February, DuPont announced that it has released a new transparent packaging polymer designed to protect three-dimensional component surfaces while also conserving energy and reducing waste in a variety of packaging applications.
Many beauty companies are using innovative packaging
These boxes were designed to house L’OCCITANE’s natural ingredient-based skincare products. In the true spirit of the brand, both the boxes and the packaging within were made with recyclable materials.
surfaces that make things look edible Structural Insulating Panels (SIPs) made from agricultural waste materials and produced by living organisms. Regionally available agricultural byproducts that are high in lignin, like cotton burrs, rice hulls, and buckwheat hulls, are used to grow fungal mycelium, the roots of mushrooms. These are grown between two OSB panels, creating a sandwich construction of the foam like material between the parallel sheets. Producing the material is an extremely low energy process because the material is grown in the dark, with no watering or petrochemical input. The organisms grow in seven days, forming miles of tiny white fibers that envelop and digest the seed husks, and bind them to form the final product. The entire process uses about ten times less energy per unit of material than the manufacturing of SIPS using synthetic foams.
The trend for using natural materials continues at the highest levels:With the most luxurious brands, we see natural materials being used for packaging – here is Tom Ford’s stunning special ediiton buffalo horn box packaging for glasses. Simply beautiful!
