Birmingham, MI
Concentrating on advertising sales for the “Big Three,” the design of the
office took on an appropriate automotive theme. With 18’ tall, black and
white graphics of classic automobiles, and exposed duct work to mimic the
underside of an automobile, the space has become a truly unique addition
to the Google family of offices. In addition to the office space, Google has
created the Now cafe. This 2,00 square foot retail space provides free wireless
Internet, large LCD TV screens, and plenty of coffee to support the surrounding
community.

The Lofts of Merchants Row
Detroit, Michigan
The Lofts of Merchants Row is an adaptive reuse project that creates a 178,000 square
foot complex which combines five nationally registered historic buildings and one
new “ground-up” building into a new mixed-use development. The two city block
of buildings were once used for retail and warehouse space for several of Detroit’s
most popular department stores will now blend “Loft Style” residential living and
commercial retail environments. With the addition of a ten story parking structure,
the entire Merchants Row development becomes an asset to the surrounding Campus
Martius area. By retaining and embracing the historic nature of the existing buildings,
the development was able to utilize Historic Tax Credits, Brownfield Tax Credits and
Obsolete Building Tax Credits to aid in the financing of the project.

Private Loft
Detroit, Michigan
The “regeneration” of the penthouse of this historic building into a private
residential loft was a joint effort in detailed design expertise and construction
ingenuity. Starting with a bare palette and a large, voluminous space, the
client wanted functional living space that allowed for work as well as
entertaining, but with a sophisticated and contemporary feel that was
juxtaposed against the original features of the building. The solution was
to keep minimal space for the two bedrooms and leave the majority of the
loft as living space.

Private Loft
Detroit, Michigan
From the time a guest gets off the elevator and sees the cherry veneer clad
curved wall, marble floor and 22 foot ceiling, walks down the hallway with
the built in book shelves, and into the living room with the wood floor and
12 foot windows, custom fireplace unit and custom entertainment center, it
is obvious that the client was serious about his desire to have beautiful, simple
materials accompany the clean, crisp living space and have all of that
complement the existing assets of the space itself. The original brick walls,
windows and the skylights were updated to complete the renovation of the
building itself. This loft is one fine example of how new and old are
intertwined to create a masterful outcome that fills the desire to have a
contemporary space in an historic building.

Hilton Garden Inn
Detroit, Michigan
The newest ground-up hotel in Detroit is located in Harmonie Park; close to the new
home of the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park and the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.
This ten story, limited service hotel has 198 rooms, a full bar and restaurant, meeting
rooms, indoor pool and a 2-story glass atrium rotunda. This will be a signature project
in Detroit because it has been almost 10 years since any new hotel facilities have
been built. Not only is it the first new hotel in Detroit in years, it is also the first
project in Southeastern Michigan to use an innovative new structural brick curtain
wall system. This new system allows for the elimination of shelf angles at each floor
which carry the typical brick facade, as the entire weight of the facade is transferred
through the brick directly to the reinforced mat foundation. Omitting the shelf angles
amounts to a substantial savings over typical brick facade construction. While this
cost saving system has been used successfully on projects out of state, Kraemer
Design Group was the first to bring this technology to the Detroit area.

Clear!Blue, Inc.
Birmingham, Michigan
The second office KDG created for Clear!Blue is steps away from their original
location that was outgrown in December 2001. This space is significantly larger,
6,000 square feet, and is located on a prominent corner in downtown Birmingham.
The space will now hold up to 24 staff and includes a large reception area, open
workspace area, two conference rooms, and a project room. The large presentation
conference room is curved and has translucent fish-scale panels with sliding doors
that allow light to filter through and out to the main work area. An employee break
area features a freestanding bar with stools and lounge chairs in front of a wall finished
with an erasable marker surface. The area is illuminated with track lighting and a
barrel vault skylight. The overall space is a contrast of beautifully finished floors,
lighting and furnishings with raw, exposed loft ceiling and existing brick walls.

Emsix
Troy, Michigan
Kraemer Design Group was given the opportunity to design a new 4,000 square foot
office for this up and coming graphic design and web design development company.
The conceptual plan has an entry and conference room that “wows” the client when
they enter the office, with large swinging conference room doors with wheels and
projection surface. Attached to the outside of the conference room curved wall is a
small private work area/phone booth, and community table. A main street at one side
of the space leads through the open design studio with workstations, lounge area and
a foosball arena. At the end of the main street are private offices and a computer
room.

NTH Detroit
Detroit, Michigan
NTH Consultants sought Kraemer Design Group’s assistance in becoming
Ford Field’s first commercial tenant, consolidating over 40 employees into
13,000 square feet of open office space. KDG was charged with blending
NTH’s corporate identity into the former J. L. Hudson warehouse architecture.
Existing concrete columns were painted and left exposed, highlighted at the
ceiling with a metal trim ring and contemporary track lighting. Custom
millwork at the reception and waiting area outside the conference rooms also
expressed the circular theme. Conference rooms were located to take
advantage of the end zone vantage point.

fast growing, upscale community. The design of this space is targeted at a younger
and affluent clientele, with a contemporary and innovative use of common materials.

Turner Construction Company
Detroit, Michigan
The renovation of the 2nd floor of the historic Buhl Building for the Detroit headquarters
of the Turner Construction Company offered great opportunities as well as challenges
for Kraemer Design Group. KDG was engaged to design a modern, functional 12,000
square foot office that would be representational of Turner’s leading role in the field.
KDG’s space planning and interior design skills were challenged in creating a space
that encompassed four departments, yet was clear and easy to understand by visiting
specialists. In response to the diverse program, the plan was subdivided through a
series of nodes to help orient visitors within the space. The new office was also an
opportunity to showcase the abilities of Turner Construction as they undertook the
build out of the space themselves. The complex forms of the nodes as well as the
exposed structural and framing members denote the quality and care taken in the
construction. KDG sought to provide a space that not only compliments, but enhances,
the identity of Turner Construction Company.

Davis & Kuhnke, PC - Law Office
Ann Arbor, Michigan
A progressive 1,800 square foot adaptive reuse of an existing 120 year old house into
a high profile attorney’s office in the historic downtown business district of the City
of Ann Arbor. This project entailed the addition of ramps, stairs, and canopies on
the building exterior in order to render the space fully accessible. These modern
interventions recall the forms and materiality of traditional farmhouse vernacular
while making a bold statement. The interior of the building was completely redesigned
with extensive custom millwork and furnishings, unique finishes, and spectacular
lighting to provide an exciting and comfortable work environment.
