he 34th annual conference of the Nigerian Mathematical Society was successfully hosted by the
Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos from the 23rd of June, 2015 to the 25th of June, 2015
with participants from within and outside the country. The theme of the conference was “Mathematics
for Sustainable Democracy and National Development”. The conference was held in honour of late Professor
Chike Obi, for his laudable contributions to the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos, and to the
Mathematicalcommunityatlarge.
The opening ceremony was witnessed by a mammoth crowd chaired by Professor J. A. Adepoju at the University
of Lagos main auditorium. Professor Babajide Alo (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Research) was at
hand to declare the conference open on behalf of the Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Rahaman Bello. It is on
record that the VC in his charismatic manner expressed his support in cash and kind. Mr. Mustapha Chike-Obi,
the Managing Director of Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) received the plaque of honour on
behalf of the family. Mr. Chike-Obi's huge support (in cash and kind) was highly appreciated by both the NMS
and the Department of Mathematics. We also thankfully appreciate our esteemed alumni, Pastor E. A. Adeboye
and Dr. D. K. Olukoya, for their support. The Dean of Science, Professor M. O. Ilori, and his predecessor
Professor Wole Familoni were present to grace the occasion. The hall was filled with applause and jubilation when
the twelve first generation mathematics professors were inducted as Fellows of the Nigerian Mathematical
Society.

· Prof.F.Famoye:“StatisticalInferenceasa KeytoSharpening PolicyforNational Development”.
· Prof.A .R.T.Solarin: TheRoleof MathematicalCentrein Nigeria:Opportunitiesand Challenges”
Professor Kuku, in his talk summarized the impressive list of results from K-theory and new surprising results
and ideas as well as its applications to Algebra, Geometry, Analysis, and Topology while Professor Famoye gave
an expository on mathematical statistics which gave a standard platform for future research work in his comfort
zone of statistical inference for discrete and continuous probability models. Also, Professor Solarin thrilled the
audience with many innovative and education programmes and outreach initiatives of his management team at
National MathematicalCentre,Abuja, Nigeria.
The annual general meeting was well attended by participants and new executive members of the council of NMS
wereelectedatthefloor.
UNILAG, hosting the conference for the first time in the history of NMS, surprised many with the
unprecedented turnout of participants. However, the immediate past Head of Department, Prof. Ray Okafor,
was dogged in fund raising and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was aggressive with publicity to achieve
thisfeat.

As regards his scientific work, Professor Chidume has solved several important open problems in his
area of research - Nonlinear Functional Analysis, in particular, -Nonlinear Operator Theory. We
mention some of them here. In 1981, he proved that the Mann sequence for nonexpansive maps is

jibola Ogunsola was born in 1934 in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State. He was the first
Actuary Nigeria ever produced. Chief Ajibola attended Government College in Ibadan in
1967. Chief Ajibola studied mathematics at the University of Ibadan and thereafter, he
traveled abroad to further his education where he qualified as a fellow of the Certified Institute of
Actuary in the United Kingdom. After graduation, Chief Ajibola returned to Nigeria and was
employed at the NICON Insurance Company. After a brief spell as the Head of the Life Department
at NICON at that time, he moved to Niger Insurance Company where he became the Chief Executive
in 1984.
He started a consultancy firm as an Actuary and later became the Chairman of Punch Newspaper in
1987, three years after the death of his brother. Ajibola Ogunsola became a household name when he
became the Chairman of Punch Nigeria Ltd. It is interesting to note that for well over two decades
Ajibola steered the ship of the Punch Group of newspapers, which sailed through turbulent waters at
different times. Throughout these years, the group suffered many hard and near-devastating punches
from the unrelenting blows of the powers of the day. Together with the board members and the
management team, Chief Ajibola saved the group from extinction, albeit at a great cost and risk to
himself and others. He brought the company from a state of virtual bankruptcy to one of buoyancy
withtheGroup'snewspapersbecomingwidelyreadall overtheworld– thankstotheinternet.
Chief Ajibola's long reign, first as Nominal Chairman and subsequently as The Executive Chairman,
ranks among one of the most successful company turnarounds in Nigeria's history. He was well
prepared for the job because he needed more than just his actuary skill to make the kind of impact he
made. Those who know him say he is a perfectionist. He is an advocate of transparency, propriety and
frugality. One of the legacies of Chief Ajibola's board was the decision to relocate their corporate
headquarters to Km 14, Lagos Ibadan Expressway by Ayorinde Bus Stop, Ogun State, otherwise
known as “The Punch Place” from their former office at No 1, Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetese, Ikeja,
Lagos. It was at the opening of the new corporate office that Ogunsola announced his retirement as
Chairman and since then the very brilliant Actuary and Insurance guru has been active in the general
running of themediaindustryin termsof policyformulation and theissueof ethics. Forthefirsttime
last week, Chief Ajibola spoke about how he worked with other board members to revive Punch
Newspapers and how they were able to make it the No.1 newspaper it is today. He actively participated
in the just concluded National Confab where he represented the Southwest Region. He is indeed a
man of themedia.

VOLUME 5, NUMBER 1, 2016
Today is a major milestone in the professional life of one of the longest serving and most dedicated members of
the AUST family. It is therefore also a very proud moment for AUST, whose profile will be greatly enhanced by the
stellar achievements of our own very distinguished colleague, senior member and community elder, Professor
th
Charles Ejikeme Chidume. On this day, the 4 of May, 2016 he joins the rarefied ranks of the select few whom
the equivalent of the Hall of Fame in Mathematics, the Nigerian Mathematical Society finds worthy of the
honour and title of Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FNMS).
For those of us who have come to know Professor Chidume well, know that such an honour is well-deserved and
perhaps long overdue. For those who may not know him as well and for the public record, let it be known that
Professor Chidume, apart from his significant contributions to the development of AUST as a Distinguished
Professor who has produced dozens of Ph.D.s in Mathematics and innumerable M.Sc. graduates, he has also
served at various points as Director of the Mathematics Institute, Acting President of the University and currently,
while continuing with oversight for the Mathematics Institute is also Vice President for Academic Affairs.
The work for which he is now being recognised arises directly from his scholarship and mentorship in the field of
Mathematics. The nearly two decades he spent at the internationally renowned International Centre for
Theoretical Physics (ICTP), at Trieste in Italy, made him a global superstar in Mathematics. There, he served not
only as a researcher in his own right but also as a program leader, a role in which he set up a new program and
led the team of scholars who came from every corner of the globe. With over 100 articles in top-ranking
journals, he has written on and supervised post-graduate in four major areas of Mathematics - Functional
Analysis; Nonlinear Operator Theory; Non-linear Optimization; and Differential Equations. It is admirable that
a scholar of his stature still also finds time to go to schools in the backwaters of this country, to coach high school
students in Mathematics. The results of those efforts have also been astounding, he has made Mathematicians
out of reluctant school boys and girls, some of whom have pursued it to post-graduate level.
AUST could not be prouder to count such a giant in his field as one of its own. It speaks volumes about the quality
of work to be expected to come out of AUST, especially with the kind of uncompromising insistence on quality
that Professor Chidume is known for. The output of his current students and those who have passed through his
hands is proudly displayed on our website.
We salute you Professor Chidume, and on behalf of all of us at AUST, a very hearty “congratulations”!

  • 10. TH THE 34 ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE NMS HOSTED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS, UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS (2015) T Chairman, LOC Secretary,LOC Contributing Writer,LOC ViceChairman, LOC he 34th annual conference of the Nigerian Mathematical Society was successfully hosted by the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos from the 23rd of June, 2015 to the 25th of June, 2015 with participants from within and outside the country. The theme of the conference was “Mathematics for Sustainable Democracy and National Development”. The conference was held in honour of late Professor Chike Obi, for his laudable contributions to the Department of Mathematics, University of Lagos, and to the Mathematicalcommunityatlarge. The opening ceremony was witnessed by a mammoth crowd chaired by Professor J. A. Adepoju at the University of Lagos main auditorium. Professor Babajide Alo (Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic and Research) was at hand to declare the conference open on behalf of the Vice Chancellor (VC), Professor Rahaman Bello. It is on record that the VC in his charismatic manner expressed his support in cash and kind. Mr. Mustapha Chike-Obi, the Managing Director of Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) received the plaque of honour on behalf of the family. Mr. Chike-Obi's huge support (in cash and kind) was highly appreciated by both the NMS and the Department of Mathematics. We also thankfully appreciate our esteemed alumni, Pastor E. A. Adeboye and Dr. D. K. Olukoya, for their support. The Dean of Science, Professor M. O. Ilori, and his predecessor Professor Wole Familoni were present to grace the occasion. The hall was filled with applause and jubilation when the twelve first generation mathematics professors were inducted as Fellows of the Nigerian Mathematical Society. Also, Professor Solarin thrilled the audience with many innovative and education programmes and outreach initiatives of his management team at National MathematicalCentre,Abuja, Nigeria. The annual general meeting was well attended by participants and new executive members of the council of NMS wereelectedatthefloor. UNILAG, hosting the conference for the first time in the history of NMS, surprised many with the unprecedented turnout of participants. However, the immediate past Head of Department, Prof. Ray Okafor, was dogged in fund raising and the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) was aggressive with publicity to achieve thisfeat. • 18. Professor Charles Ejikeme Chidume was born in 1947 in Nimo, Anambra State, Nigeria. He holds B.Sc. Mathematics, UNN; M.Sc. (Canada); M.Sc., Ph.D. (USA). He joined the University of Nigeria in Nsukka in July, 1984 as Lecturer I and was promoted to Full Professor of Mathematicson 1stOctober,1989. Professor Chidume later joined the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) of IAEA and UNESCO of the UnitedNations in 1992 as a Research Mathematician and Coordinator of the Postgraduate Diploma Programme (Mathematics) of the Centre. During his long stay at the ICTP (1992 -2009), Professor Chidume helped many young Africans to visit the Centre and use the excellent facilities of the Centre to improve on their education. Furthermore, he attracted funds from International Donours to organize training programmes in Sub-Sahara African for young scientists fromthesub-region. As regards his scientific work, Professor Chidume has solved several important open problems in his area of research - Nonlinear Functional Analysis, in particular, -Nonlinear Operator Theory. We mention some of them here. In 1981, he proved that the Mann sequence for nonexpansive maps is uniformly asymptotically regular in any real normed space provided the domain of the map is bounded (Houston J. Math. Vol. 7 (1981) 345-355 (Math. Review 83b:47063), hence resolving a problem which had been open since 1978 ; In 2001, he produced (with S. A. Mutangadura) an example to show that the Mann iteration sequence will not always converge strongly to a fixed point of a Lipschitz pseudo-contractive map Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 129 (2001), No. 8, 2359 - 2363, thereby resolving a problem that had been open since 1974. This paper has been cited over 120 times (web of knowledge). Professor Chidume has supervised 16 (sixteen) Ph.D theses in Mathematics. Five of those whose Ph.D theses he supervised are now Full Professors of Mathematics. Because of the quality of his research accomplishments, he has served and is still serving in several Editorial Boards of national and international journals including: J. Nigerian Math. Soc.; J. • 23. A jibola Ogunsola was born in 1934 in the ancient city of Ibadan, Oyo State. He was the first Actuary Nigeria ever produced. Chief Ajibola attended Government College in Ibadan in 1967. Chief Ajibola studied mathematics at the University of Ibadan and thereafter, he traveled abroad to further his education where he qualified as a fellow of the Certified Institute of Actuary in the United Kingdom. After graduation, Chief Ajibola returned to Nigeria and was employed at the NICON Insurance Company. After a brief spell as the Head of the Life Department at NICON at that time, he moved to Niger Insurance Company where he became the Chief Executive in 1984. He started a consultancy firm as an Actuary and later became the Chairman of Punch Newspaper in 1987, three years after the death of his brother. Ajibola Ogunsola became a household name when he became the Chairman of Punch Nigeria Ltd. It is interesting to note that for well over two decades Ajibola steered the ship of the Punch Group of newspapers, which sailed through turbulent waters at different times. Throughout these years, the group suffered many hard and near-devastating punches from the unrelenting blows of the powers of the day. Together with the board members and the management team, Chief Ajibola saved the group from extinction, albeit at a great cost and risk to himself and others. He brought the company from a state of virtual bankruptcy to one of buoyancy withtheGroup'snewspapersbecomingwidelyreadall overtheworld– thankstotheinternet. Chief Ajibola's long reign, first as Nominal Chairman and subsequently as The Executive Chairman, ranks among one of the most successful company turnarounds in Nigeria's history. He was well prepared for the job because he needed more than just his actuary skill to make the kind of impact he made. Those who know him say he is a perfectionist. He is an advocate of transparency, propriety and frugality. One of the legacies of Chief Ajibola's board was the decision to relocate their corporate headquarters to Km 14, Lagos Ibadan Expressway by Ayorinde Bus Stop, Ogun State, otherwise known as “The Punch Place” from their former office at No 1, Olu Aboderin Street, Onipetese, Ikeja, Lagos. It was at the opening of the new corporate office that Ogunsola announced his retirement as Chairman and since then the very brilliant Actuary and Insurance guru has been active in the general running of themediaindustryin termsof policyformulation and theissueof ethics. Forthefirsttime last week, Chief Ajibola spoke about how he worked with other board members to revive Punch Newspapers and how they were able to make it the No.1 newspaper it is today. He actively participated in the just concluded National Confab where he represented the Southwest Region. He is indeed a man of themedia. • 37. N O T I C E S O F T H E N I G E R I A N M A T H E M A T I C A L S O C I E T Y 36 VOLUME 5, NUMBER 1, 2016 Today is a major milestone in the professional life of one of the longest serving and most dedicated members of the AUST family. It is therefore also a very proud moment for AUST, whose profile will be greatly enhanced by the stellar achievements of our own very distinguished colleague, senior member and community elder, Professor th Charles Ejikeme Chidume. On this day, the 4 of May, 2016 he joins the rarefied ranks of the select few whom the equivalent of the Hall of Fame in Mathematics, the Nigerian Mathematical Society finds worthy of the honour and title of Fellow of the Nigerian Mathematical Society (FNMS). For those of us who have come to know Professor Chidume well, know that such an honour is well-deserved and perhaps long overdue. For those who may not know him as well and for the public record, let it be known that Professor Chidume, apart from his significant contributions to the development of AUST as a Distinguished Professor who has produced dozens of Ph.D.s in Mathematics and innumerable M.Sc. graduates, he has also served at various points as Director of the Mathematics Institute, Acting President of the University and currently, while continuing with oversight for the Mathematics Institute is also Vice President for Academic Affairs. The work for which he is now being recognised arises directly from his scholarship and mentorship in the field of Mathematics. The nearly two decades he spent at the internationally renowned International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), at Trieste in Italy, made him a global superstar in Mathematics. There, he served not only as a researcher in his own right but also as a program leader, a role in which he set up a new program and led the team of scholars who came from every corner of the globe. With over 100 articles in top-ranking journals, he has written on and supervised post-graduate in four major areas of Mathematics - Functional Analysis; Nonlinear Operator Theory; Non-linear Optimization; and Differential Equations. It is admirable that a scholar of his stature still also finds time to go to schools in the backwaters of this country, to coach high school students in Mathematics. The results of those efforts have also been astounding, he has made Mathematicians out of reluctant school boys and girls, some of whom have pursued it to post-graduate level. AUST could not be prouder to count such a giant in his field as one of its own. It speaks volumes about the quality of work to be expected to come out of AUST, especially with the kind of uncompromising insistence on quality that Professor Chidume is known for. The output of his current students and those who have passed through his hands is proudly displayed on our website. We salute you Professor Chidume, and on behalf of all of us at AUST, a very hearty “congratulations”!
